One of my favourite things about reading classics is being able to read between the lines when they're being referenced in other books (like contemporaries for example), it gives the plot an added layer of complexity which would've probably went over my head if hadn't read the referenced classic 🥰

I’m in last year of middle school and I’m actually surprised and proud of myself that I do have read the books you just showed. I just love classic novels, there is something about them that’s hypnotizing once you’ve started reading them. But my absolute favorite classic is ‘the great gatsby’ mostly because the characters are all crazy and terrible people but nick( I couldn’t quite trust him for whatever reason)…I’ve re read that book so many times. My favourite classics are Persuasion and Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations by Dickens (Dickens is hit or miss for a lot of people but I like what I've read from him so far), All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton (if you like The Great Gatsby I think you'd like Edith Wharton), Animal Farm by George Orwell and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I'm sure you've read it if you like The Picture of Dorian Gray but I also really like The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. I must get to 1984, Macbeth and Hamlet soon!

A novel that stuck with me is Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. What I get out of it might not be what others get out of it as that is the way with interpretation. To me, it’s a very poignant allegory about a person who feels like a burden to those around him.

I recently read that as well and I think that this story is so universal. Everyone feels unwanted, alienated or like a burden sometimes, and this reflected it so well (Kafka probably put a lot of himself there). I felt so bad for Gregor, he sacrificed everything for his family, and always defended their hurtful actions thinking they were right... It was so sad to me

I recommend J.D. Salinger's thought-provoking novel FRANNY & ZOOEY. It changes settings from an Ivy League College to an eccentric family's townhouse in New York City some time in the 1950s. I think you'll find things in common with Franny and her spiritual plight and you'll enjoy the sparkling banter between she and her her brother Zooey, who has an inimitable way of talking her through her crisis in a climactic epiphany.

My favorite classics (in no particular order) are The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (my favorite book), Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Le Roux, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I've been wanting to re-read The Picture of Dorian Gray lately! I think you'd like Rebecca and probably Anna Karenina and maybe Valley of The Dolls. There are parts of Valley of The Dolls I'm not sure how you'd like, so that's why I say maybe.

Macbeth... I feel like an uncultured swine not knowing what it is about, even though everyone seems to be talking about it. At the same time I feel so lucky, to think that it is all going to be so unknown and surprising to me when I get to read it. And there you are describing it as 'such a dark tragedy'. I'm innnn.

1984 is my favorite novel (together with one flew over the cuckoo's nest). I always enjoyed the ending, I didn't even know he was sick towards the end of writing the book! The more you know... great choice in books, we have very similar tastes haha

I love most of the books you mentioned and I wanted to add that Candide by Voltaire is one of my all time favourites. I've annotated my copy to within an inch of its life 😅 it's a short novel but it's stuck with me and I recommend it the same way I do with 1984. It's not the same type of story at all but I think they both should be read.

Muchado is one of my all time favourites, I studied it in alevels, watched 2 t.v editions ( one in stage format) and seen it in an outdoor play! I'm such a thriller and tradgedy reader generally though like Tess of the D'ubervilles by Thomas Hardy is also a top fave. Totally agree about Mary Shelley! 💕

I love Shakespeare. I once saw A Midsommer Nights Dream performed entirely by a cast from India spoken entirely in Hindi and there was a giant screen above the stage for the captions and honestly it was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had seeing a play. And before that Hamlet and Macbeth were always 2 of my favorite Shakespeare plays.

There's a graphic novel adaptation of Macbeth from the witches point of view and it's so good! It's called Toil and Trouble if you want to check it out😁 Haven't read classics/plays in a while but I truly enjoyed The Importance of Being Earnest and loved the movie adaptation for it as well!

If you like 1984, check out Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler if you haven't. Like 1984 it is actually more relevant today than when it was first published in the early 90s. Some of my favorite classic novels are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Huston, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath And I also love Dorian Gray and Frankenstein. They are hands down my two favorite classic gothic novels

I personally didn’t trust Nick when I read The Great Gatsby because , he repeats a lot of how honest and good he is (mainly in the beginning) when an actual honest person wouldn’t need to do so, along with the other holes in his narrative that make him unreliable. But even with that, like you said, it needed to be through his point of view for the message and themes to get across and shine.

Considering Frankenstein is the first one you mention, already know there will be a lot of good books on this list. I’m currently reading Frankenstein, and I can safely say from what I have read it has surpassed my favorite classic of 2 years which is lord of the flies. I also didn’t really enjoy great gatsby until later on in the book (and I thoroughly enjoyed writing 2 analysis essays and one quote analysis test for that book too) So yeah I think those are my 3 favorites and I hope this list will give me more ideas!

Bravo on the choice of Hamlet. Could not agree more. I also enjoy Doctor Faustus, my second favourite Elizabethan play. Plus if you like 1984 you should also try We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. I prefer Orwell but appreciated Zamyatin, some may disagree. I am tempted to ramble on about other books but I will stop here.

Most of your favorite classics are also my favorite classics! That's so cool. I especially love Shakespeare and Dorian Gray. As for recs, I think you'd enjoy Demian and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (at this point in time you might have read them? I subscribed only recently). Both of these, similarly to Dorian Grey, take a deeper look into one's interior and explore dark morality. I love using them in essays, they are amazing! Also lmao in regards to 1984 I would like to point out that this society is not as unrealistic as it seems. USSR was very much that And I agree with your hot take on the Great Gatsby movie!! I watched it this year and really enjoyed it, too. I thought it actually depicted the feeling of the book well and expanded on the characters. And I loved how the 20s were portrayed. It was a very pleasant movie overall and I am really not the one to praise movies, especially book adaptations. After Percy Jackson movies I am traumatized lmao

*Catcher in the Rye, Atlas Shrugged, & To Kill A Mockingbird* are 3 of my favorite classics. So I LOVE the Mia Wasikowka adaptation of *Alice in Wonderland* I can watch it over-n-over. I love The Picture of Dorian Gray, but I also recommend Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (love that Bedelia's last name is the same in Hannibal and I can already imagine an essay about Bedelia and Rebecca), Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, the Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as The Count of Monte Christo (haven't read this one yet, but I've heard good things)

Aaaah, my favourite Shakespearean play is King Lear. Since you like Hamlet so much, you should check out this Bollywood version of it (if you're into it), it's actually REALLY well done. It's called 'Haider'. The director has also adapted Macbeth (Maqbool) and Othello (Omkara) and all of them are AMAZING!!

The point about Great Gatsby is so true! I think it adds so much depth as well because we are warned at the start of the novel that you can’t trust Nick on everything he says. So we are siding with a character based on judgments we don’t know to be true - why else would we side with the man intending to commit adultery with Daisy. We only think Tom is wrong for Daisy because we see him through Nick’s eyes (and not very often) but Daisy loves him and chooses him. Our perceptions of the characters are so attached to Nick’s voice that we have to question how we view things. At least that’s the greater ‘lesson’ i took from it. Just because Nick is likeable doesn’t mean he’s always reliable.

The fact that the Picture of Dorian Gray has a painting of Franz Liszt on the cover makes me feel weird. I can't even explain it. Just something about a book in which a painting plays a major role having a real life portrait of a real life famous person on the cover

I agree with you in all but one on this list out of the ones I’ve read (most, apart from couple of the Shakespeares) and that is 1984. I read it this past summer and would have DNFd it had it not been for an audiobook I found. I think the idea for the novel is amazing. However, I found the writing terribly boring at times, I feel like nothing happened in the first part and I can’t get over the way Orwell discussed women. Winston sees a woman for the first time (within the first pages) and straight up describes how he wants to rape this unknown woman. He sees her again and this time he wishes to crush her head to the cobblestones. He sees her for the third time (still hasn’t spoken to her) and suddenly decides he’s in love with her, after she declares her love to him which again makes no sense. I just really couldn’t get behind this book. I’m currently reading Handmaid’s tale which covers a lot of similar themes and it’s just sooooo much better!! I would recommend it 500% over 1984

I enjoyed Frankenstein as well, but generally disagree as to who the Monster was. Frankenstein's Creation was a Victim/Product of design, rather than a monster, or evil. I think it (in part) served as cautionary tale of what happens when one plays god, or interferes with The Laws of Nature. In Frankenstein's Creature/Creation, I was introduced to a pitiable thing deserving more of sympathy, rather than fear or disdain. Brave New World was another one I was very fond of.
