art is subjective. You can't say that your portfolio is better/worse because there always will be people who will disagree. And I am one of them. We all learn at our own pace, we all have different brains, different life experience. Perfection does not exist, and behind every ''incredible'' youtuber's artwork hides a lot of sweat, probably even tears and many negative thoughts just like yours. Be more compassionate to yourself.

Ross’ portfolio was probably one of the very best Art Center received that year, no joke. Most accepted students are very talented like him, but their work is probably not even half as good. Art Center is probably the most difficult to get into as well. Other comparable east coast schools have lower barriers of entry (but cost muuuch more).

@@Facegrinder1 No you don't Art is mostly hard work! I started drawing at 14 AND I was trained from my left hand to my right hand in elementary school, because catholics in the 90s. So I'm a lefty that draws with her right hand. And I got into art school too! If yiu can't sit down for 1-2 years and just draw a lot to prepare your portfolio, then art school isn't for you. You don't need to be able to draw that well, but there are certain things that should be included. Btw fine art portfolios look very different, they look more at the process in general. For a design/gamedesign portfolio: characterdesigns, environments, storyboards. It doesn't need to be all from the same projects. I had much more projects included. I had charcterdesign and storyboard from the same project, but I also illustrated one of Brother Grimms fairytales I had nude drawings, some designs, portrait, environment AND a sketchbook included. Here in germany art and design universities love sketchbooks, because they can see your process in it. I got 15 out of 15 points for it. If someone like me who was at a HUGE disadvantage can do it, then you can do it too, if you love it and put your mind to it. I don't mean you have to draw 8 hours a day, but draw regularly and play around, have fun with it, let yourself be influenced by your surroundings and be inspired. Do this for 1-2 years and then sit down and look through what you got. Take the best of it and then make a few more drawings/paintings for the portfolio speciffically. That's how I did it. Half of the stuff in it wasn't even for the portfolio, but just stuff I loved to do. If you want to learn I recommend: figure drawing, go to a nude drawing class, value studies. Not too long, just 15-20 minutes per picture. Learn about shapes and color theory ( meaning of colors, color contrasts ). Try to apply this to characters, worlds and stories. Look up the the basics of storytelling ( f.e. 3 arch storytelling, basics of storyboarding, camerashots and camera angle )and characterdesign ( f.e. heroes journey archetypes, what are "need" and "want" in a character ect ) That is plenty for 1-2 years!!! You probably don't need all of this! But this are some basics that I studied in preparation. I got accepted in 2 art universities and then stopped applying. It's not talent, it's work. And it takes time, BUT if you love what you are doing, time will not feel that long. Unless it's anatomy, when I learn anatomy it feels twice as long XD

Also to *force* yourself to spend the time to improve your craft and skills. To grow as an artist and let that be your main focus and commitment for several years. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re lucky enough to do this without the need to work at the same time, I’d highly recommend.

My friend went to art school to be a graphic designer and now she’s jobless and 80k dollars in debt. My advice for ppl going is to be sure there is a job market for what they are going for in their area, or be willing to move to a place with job opportunities. And yes, connections matters. To be a successful artist you need to be a good salesman. You are selling your art and yourself as an artist to people. Learn that skill. Many people can draw well, but not every good artist makes it big for a reason. It’s the ability to market oneself that got big artists where they are. It’s an important skill.

Perfectionism/comparison can be the very thing that kills your spark. Even if you don’t think you’re improving, taking 5 minutes out of your day for a simple sketch can be worth it in the long run. this is a great reference for high-end art schools. 17 y/o ross was evidently a very intermediate artist esp for his age. however, for other less-experienced young artists looking into apply for art school, do not make art school your be-all n end-all. also, as ross stated, you do not necessarily even need to study art. art school is mainly for the sake of building connections n getting feedback from professionals. if you're confident there's a place for you in creative n entertainment industries, art school is a good way to at least better the chances of you getting there. there are also of course alternatives for art school. less demanding art schools like ringling n scad are out there. you also don't even need to apply for just an art school. there are more affordable universities out there with fleshed out art programs. also be aware of other majors. applying to one major may be more difficult than another due to competitiveness. but in the end, don't be afraid to apply to high-end schools, but also be sure to keep your options open. personally, i have zero traditional art background n i didn't really start taking any art seriously until half way through junior year. i have a graphic design background but my portfolio consisted of a bunch of multi-media works focused on 3d, which i only really spent a year mildly refining since that was the medium of my ap art portfolio. i got into ringling, scad, n uarts but ended up going to drexel due to its finaid offerings (while the art schools gave none), experienced teachers, n coop program, since entertainment industry jobs largely emphasize experience on top of your portfolio.

There's little to no options like there are in the States for anyone that wants to do digital art here, it's really frustrating and sad to be honest. The main focus I think on art in Australia within universities is on making modern or fine art. I've looked into it and none of the limited options available for digital stuff that exist are even anywhere near the state I live in anyway and are by independent institutions that aren't really official universities :( Thankfully you're correct in that you can make it as an artist nowadays without art school!

Happy bday Ross! as someone who went to artschool in Columbus in Ohio, I wouldn't recommended going to artschool. Unless you absolutely never picked up a pencil or paintbrush in your life. Alot of learning can be done online for free, instead acquiring life time debt from going to a college, let alone a private college ( and college during a pandemic). In my experience only a literal handful of teachers at my college were impactful, but still not in a way that influences my art today (a lot of teachers acted unprofessional). Art school is great if you have 0 direction, but know not every prof. is going to be good or worth the money being invested. Alot of learning and improvement is still ON YOU and depends how you execute what you learned and will learn and time manage. I will say going to artschool is great for networking and making life long friends and connections with faculty.
@ashpbrrrr3 жыл бұрын
Isn't alot of art school really just about teaching you industry work etiquette and networking? Like yeah to an extent you improve your technique and skill, but it's more so towards polishing what you already have to bring it to a professional industry standard... Art and design schools usually don't teach from the scratch ALL the fundamentals. That's why you literally need to submit a portfolio. Art schools don't take in absolute beginners cuz they know what they're there for- to make professional artists. So if you are a hobbyist looking to improve your art skill, DON'T go to art school unless you're planning to turn it into a career.
@TheCrazedEB3 жыл бұрын
@@ashpbrrrr also true, i think at least for my school it was just really weird, we had recruiters that came to my HS stating what you said about gearing students towards being professionals in multiple art industries. But then when I got in, not every teacher had that mindset, a lot of bogus projects were assigned that were kiddy arts and crafts dribble, that were here is how to mix colors, here is how sketch basic things (stuff that was novice and fundamentals you shouldn't have to relearn but were force to, at least in my major for illustration). So its hit or miss or like a box of chocolate with classes, you didn't know if you were going to get a Craig Mullins esque professor or a hobbyist teacher who pulls assignments from pintrest. We had a site were we could see peoples acceptance work, so it depends on the school. Mine accepted damn near everyone.

I’ve seen your artwork here and there, but the first time I really got a good look into your head was when I watched your interview with Andrew. When you said “If I don’t feel like I’m contributing to bringing my world and characters to life, then I’m wasting my time”, it really stuck with me. And now I’m trying to get on my own feet and do just that. You’re portfolio is outstanding, and it gives me a good idea of what I should have when I make one. Thanks for always helping other artists, young and old, and for being awesome!! Hope your birthday goes/went great!!

Hope to get that good one day. I'm 29 and have never been into drawing until now, but now I'm so very interested in learning to draw and become an artist & a digital designer, but I do wish I would have started a lot younger, because at this point it feels very hard to start from scratch, learning just the basic of how to draw. But I'm very passionated about it and so, if you have any great tips for a beginner, who is very serious about making this his profession, then I'd love to hear. (general tips, great books/websites to learn from or a great video from someone (maybe yourself?)... just, anything). I'd really appreciate it, my birthday was the 3rd btw. So, happy b-day to us :P Btw. I am new on this channel, so maybe you've already covered some of this stuff, so I'm sorry if this is a much repeated comment & request.
