Great vid, Joe and lots of good information. I'm sure others have already told you this a thousand times, but just in case not... one thing that helps me with finding aircraft when shooting long lenses is keeping both eyes open. Helps tremendously especially with things like opposing passes like the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds do and timing.

Great video, for me, flying is a hobby, so your photography resonates with me, you are good enough with the lighting that I feel like I am on the field, everything we see is light reflected back to our eyes, you have a great understanding of this.

It does take practice, but once you figure it out it pays off. My Go-to Air Show setup is a Nikon Z7 II with the F-Mount 500mm pf 5.6.

Wow, those lenses are monster size. I've been shooting air shows for a good number of years. I can't afford those really long lenses so I use a 75-300mm lens and I still lose track of the airplane on occasion, so you're not alone! I easily get prop blur at 1/400sec shutter speed and that fast speed also helps to mitigate camera shake while panning. I prioritize shutter speed, let the F-stop be what it is, and change the ISO to get the best lighting. I have gotten in the habit of taking a few test pics of the sky before the fly by to help dial in the ISO. And, I find it's best to have a slightly low exposure and I can bring out the image later in post production while overexposed images are much more difficult to work with. For shots on the ground I prioritize F-stop to blur the background. I too hate to have people, cars, fencing, orange cones or anything else that distracts the viewer from the subject. Great video!

Thanks! Great point about shutter priority and am going to use that at Sun n Fun. Amazing how makes so much sense and yet I never thought of that, lol. Thanks Steve!

Slow motion revealed a minor bounce in landing ;-) BTW, just to share, here's some info about the physics of the stroboscopic effect which is at play here when you discuss propeller blur (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroboscopic_effect). When you fly to a distant grass strip, do you set up your ground equipment in the first flight, then fly around, capture landings, and then pick up your equipment before it is pilfered, and return to home base? By the way, Joe, on a serious note, really appreciate the honesty in your videos and your calmness in narrating what could have morphed into a difficult personal situation. I hope people understand and appreciate the instructive nature of your videos and how useful your advice and viewpoints can be for people learning to fly or just be safer pilots. I also like your down-to-earth yet uncompromising technical explanations.

Yup! I go to private airports so Know the folks, lol. Then set up the telephoto lens just beyond runway threshold . Nice thing is there are fences or bushes/trees I can set up camera knowing they are out of the flight path etc

Great source of info! Was hoping to hear about how you setup the shot for those landings in the cub. My assumption you're landing in a general spot that you had already focused the camera on and just let it run on continues focus? Then in post edit cut out the excess video while in the pattern and taxi. I love this look also and how the compression of the shot works. Keep it up!

Incredible … f/2.8 screaming fast but those monster lenses are a nightmare to swing tracking planes. I’m a Canon guy and don’t own any big primes due to the $$$ and lack of flexibility. You’re spot on for all counts. Your Cub videos are insane though - I don’t do video so I’m in awe 😎 of the stuff you get.

I don’t know anything about cameras pretty much at all. But I know pictures. You’re not gonna believe it but I’ve been checking them out all my life, and your pictures are top notch. You need to go to that playboy place, grab a couple of girls tell’em to put a little clothes on “ we’re going to the airport for photos. Just tell the misses you’re trying to help some poor girl that are down. We’ll look at them tell they haven’t had a sandwich in a long while, hell don’t have enough money for much clothes. Yep that’s how the big boys do pic’s. You take pictures not pics, big difference. But if you do want to go to that big house and get models give me a call I’m over 60 so I could help you, them would be out of the question.😂😂😂😂 have a wonderful day, night or week time my friend.
