My Bank Was Hacked? Well They Will Never Tell You So.

Since sometime Sunday through most of today my I can't access my bank online. They say say they are having difficulties and online banking is unavailable. Is my money still there and is it safe?

Mine was hacked a couple of years ago, and they notified me they were sending me a new debit card, and to check and make sure there was nothing being charged on my account that I had not done. I have been in the list of compromised hacks four times now. The VA was hacked, Target, my bank and the other day it was something else, but I don't remember what. It seems like it's an every day occurrence now.

I still do it old school. Keep enough in checking to pay bills and bury the cash in a coffee can in the back yard. If you do it electronically, your setting yourself up for disaster.

I live in the city and there are more and more shops every year that no longer except cash at all… Why? Because it’s really easy to rob a place that has cash definitely a lot harder when it’s all electronic… So while their advantages and disadvantages to using the Internet the best option that we have moving forward is learning how to protect ourselves and being smart I’ve never had my bank account hacked not that it couldn’t happen… But it’s like the equivalent of getting robbed on the street

Please update the community as to your status: all set and back up and running, were all accounts paid? etc. What I do (as many have shared): my income is received electronically. Has been that way for decades-no issue. I put as much as possible on automatic payment, just one less item to worry about. Other bills not on auto payment, yes, I pay on line, secure sites-no issue. Take a screen shot, write down the confirmation number, await receipt of the email as well. I cross check when I get my main CC statement in, as everything will show up there, too. Everything else is paid thru my main credit card (few, rare exceptions such as a random order thru Home depot, where I must use the HD card in order to use the 10% off promo-really not a big deal for me). Once a month, well in advance of when it is due, I phone my CC company and make payment. CC companies hate me as I am that client who pays the very large balance (remember, the bulk of my expenditures come thru it)off, in full every stinking month, netting me cash back of minimally $500, if not more per year. It's my "fun money." I had to look in my check book register to see when I last wrote a check. Yup, it was this past July for my auto taxes. I paid them at a local bank that is literally at the end of my street(or could have driven further into town, to city hall) as the city would tack on a service fee for CC users. I have a debit card, never, ever use it. Don't trust it, it is not as fully protected, compared to my CC should there be an issue. I rarely mail out checks, last one that I did, was for tree service. It was a larger check, that made me a bit nervous. Physically saw my mailman collect the mail from my mail box. There is a large mail hub that I live close to. The check was going across the city. Never arrived. I ended up having to pay $30 for a stop payment to be issued, the tree service let me pay the bill with my CC. I had been in constant communication with them, from the get go, "Hey, I mailed you a check, should be there in 2 days, please let me know when you get it, thanks." "Hey, did you receive my check yet?" etc. They were very understanding and equally concerned as there was a second client whose payment disappeared. My point being: I got the check securely into the PO's hands. Once they delivered it, unless in a secure mail box on the other end-anything can happen. So no, I don't trust mailing checks, feel much safer making CC payment instead, as outlined above. I also have a hidden cash box, have done this for decades. It's my "get out of Dodge fund"-stuff happens, emergencies come up, you need CASH to resolve it, and resolve it now. I've been able to help family, in a pinch, as well as tap into it, when an emergency arose.

Clark Howard, who used to have a financial advice radio show for decades and now has a podcast on KZbin, recently said never to send checks in the mail because it could get stolen and then they have your account number. I know when I pay electronically, it rarely hits my bank the same day. It sits as “pending” a day or two and then clears my account. I’ve never been accused of being late when I initiate a payment on the due date.

Any company that gets your check has your account number, whether the check was stolen or not. No matter if we pay online or by check or money order, stuff happens. I wish there was a foolproof way to know nothing bad would happen to our money, but there isn't. But one should check their account every few days just to make sure there are no random charges on it that we didn't do. Same with the credit card account.

I would trust the USPS with my check than an online pay service..hackers always take the easy street of online accounts. We can't blame the mail carriers...they only delivery what is assigned for that day...muck ups start at the processing centers. We're mail carriers in this family so I can say we deliver what is designated for our routes.

I like getting out of the house and the tag agency and court house charge extra for using a credit card so I write a check, also use checks for estimated quarterly income tax state and federal and those I actually put in the mail I did pay the car and pickup insurance online with the credit card yesterday. Liability on the two old vehicles up 25% over 6 months or 50% a year. The tag renewal for my motor scooter is more than the car and pickup combines since it's newer.

The electronic prescription system was attacked also. I have been waiting to hear about it on the news but so far there hasn't been anything said that I heard. I pay all of my bills online. Some I have to do myself but the monthly ones are auto paid. We think the AT&T issues might have affected some of our faxing too. I think the old way might have been better. Not easier but better. Agree. Waiting until the last minute if you don't have to keeps you poised for a late fee if something happens. I know paying the bill early gives the company more money so they can make profit, and that is annoying to think about, but in the long run, does it make a difference? Our own security is more important than how much money some company is making, because they'll figure out how to make more money one way or another.

yes, i use a credit card for everything and then it gets automatically paid each month from my bank account. i write just a few checks a year for taxes. and i get a year end summary of everything i bought that year. it's nice that most places now accept credit for everything.

A good example not to depend on everything online. So sorry you went through this. Possibly get a letter from your bank about the outage and send it off to maybe adjust the late fee? Although I do online banking, I still get my bills through the mail, except my cell phone bill is an automatic debit. We all will be SOL if the internet goes down. We've become to reliable on technology. And then what about social security money since they require automatic deposit? A lot of people don't have extra cash on hand to even buy groceries. It's a real problem!

As a retired postal worker who reported mail thefts to the inspection service, I have to inform you that theft of mail and check washing is huge. No guarantees there. Second, there is no way to get out of the system of electronic money transfer that I can see. On the issue of late fees, electronic payments are not instantaneous. Once it took 9 days for the bank to pay my car insurance. When I complained, I was referred to a bank statement about such delays. Good point is that most bills have grace period before considered LATE.

I pay my bills with cash. No money order. I go to walmart & pay my bills electronically every month. I have done this for years. Its very dependable. They give you same day option or next day service. Depends on how fast you need your bill paid. I pay my last credit card bills there. & even seen people pay their elctric bills there. I pay only a dollar 50, for next day service It's cheap. I do this because I couldn't rely on money orders anymore. Everytime I sent one off & it was early so it would get there in time Well the companies would always say We didn't get it ! So you have to pay the 65 dollar late fee or 150 dollar late fee Which I traced the money order & that was a lie. Sent the receipt & the day it arrived at the company. Still after all of that proof, still had to pay the late fee. So never Again! This is so much easier & dependable.

Well Mr Tom, my bank was hacked last year. Didn't find out until I was sent a letter from the bank several months later! I promptly called them and was told that I could change accounts if I wanted to or just keep an eye on any suspicious activity. I told the bank representative that would be a big hassle since I have all bills automatically taken from the account and also direct deposits as well. I point blank asked if I opted to keep the same account and some type of nefarious activity should take place wasn't I covered by the bank. The representative said yes. Of course I noted her name and the date this conversation took place. As much as I initially didn't want to have payments directly taken from my account, it's rather difficult to not do things " their" way anymore. And I have never had a problem in all these years until last year. As far as I know the social security administration made direct deposit of social security checks mandatory versus receiving through the mail. Thinking positive thoughts for you. One month about six months ago, my Social Security check, which usually comes in the third Wednesday of the month, came in on the 6th of the month. This was right before they thought we might have to shut down the government. I thought it was very strange. But around the time my check normally comes, I was looking at my account, and the S.S. check was there. I looked back to the 6th of the month, and it was NOT there, and no indication it ever had been. I was doubting my sanity. I know what I saw. I thought maybe they sent it early in case of government shut down, but how did they make it disappear? Some strange things are going on in this world, and some of it I almost am afraid to share with others lest they think I'm going down the yellow brick road or something.

My local bank is now owned by a regional bank too. I have a local branch too. But I pay my bills using a cash-back credit card and pay that off online each month. I do take 2 checks to the nearby water/sanitation business because they charge a percentage to pay with a card! I won’t do that! All this digital stuff is very scary. I have cash in a safe deposit box just in case. And yes the late fees may be a real problem. I hope not. Always write down the confirmation code regardless of how it’s paid! Bless your heart.

I always like to call and make a phone payment so I can get an immediate confirmation number. If something goes wrong it's up to the bank, the creditor and the processing centers to fight it out. Also there is a phone record and a recording of the transaction.

I know that there been alot of medical places that have gotten hacked aswell.I generally call in and make payments over a auto line and two of mine are automatic payments.I really don't like anything to do with online things dealing with our bank account. I used to keep my bills until the week before they were due, then mail the check. I didn't have the money to pay them any sooner, most of the time. Now that I'm in better shape, I pay the bills as soon as they come in. I don't have many. I still write checks, as mistakes with digital payments have gotten me twice for $30 each time for the power company, who claimed both times the account number was wrong. So, I'm back to checks. I don't trust how long it will take for my payment to get there, and stuff happens, like the bank hack. Besides, I don't want to sit and think about it for days on end. I'd rather get it off my plate. I could go with auto pay, but I like good old fashioned checks for the most part. I will still pay other bills online sometimes, but I feel the same way about digital stuff. I guess if you were born into the digital age, you wouldn't think anything about it, but if you're older, you know a different way, and we can compare. They cannot compare. Like landlines and cell phones. Like phone booths and cell phones. Like a lot of things.

Suggest that you look on your power company's website to see if they offer balance billing. I pay the same every month, but come November, it's "settle up month" and there may be a credit, or I may owe extra. Keeps things easy for the household budget as I have a set amount electronically paid thru my checking account. I have it set up, where I get an email, I get a text of an impending payment, I still receive paper statements (can also look up on line)-my preference. Once the payment goes thru, yup, another email and another text. I also can see it once it hits my checking account (on line). Just one less thing to worry about.

You can get a printout of all of your transactions at the bank. They better do ot for free since they were down. Keep track of whats neen pd and not and get it in writing you wont have to pay late fees if in fact theyre late..pretty sure they wont be late, but still. Print outs! Go back to the bank for your printouts

We had our debit card hacked twice ,ordered new cards The last time they took all our money.The bank corrected it but it was about twenty days before we got our money back.We pay our mortgage through post office in three day envelope.Money orders .The rest we put just enough money in bank to cover,pay within hour of deposit.Many places you can pay by calling,with debit card,it comes out immediately.Everything else cash.Stores,gas,ECT...Never let any money sit in bank anymore.I sure hope your bank fixes your account soon.Sending prayers and love.

I pay the 2 bills i have monthly online but pay a week before due date. I've heard too many stories of checks getting stolen in the mail, washed, written for another amount and then cashed. A gift card I sent my daughter through the mail was stolen. Now i have to insure anything i send. I don't like to use my debit card when shopping. When I pay with cash, the cashiers seem a bit annoyed because they aren't set up with a lot of change like in the old days.

I have had 2 checks missing by mail. One to my town hall 100 ft away from the post office/they share the same driveway and one to my nurse's license. Luckily no one found or used the check and now I drive to the town hall to pay my taxes.

If you use snail mail make sure to spend the extra money on certified mail because every step of the journey to the final destination is signed off by the person/ post office plus the person receiving it. This way you can tell if it was ever lost or if the bank or creditor deliberately let the mail sit a day or more longer in the p.o.b. so they could charge late fees. Example a bank's "lock box mail clerk" waited till Wednesday to pick up the mail and it wasn't a snow or hurricane weather delay issue and it was the third day of the month then your payment is automatically late. If they received about one thousand payments that day and charged everyone a late fee thats an extra 39,000 profit illegally charged to the consumer. If you sent by some type mail with a tracking number you can prove wrongful late fees.

Something happened with my bank account too tonight. I couldn't get my money out. of the AMT machine tonight, it said ......Unable to make cash Transaction . I live in Tennessee. I've never had any problems like this with the bank before. It's got me stressed out also.

Well Mr Tom I’d be in trouble. I pay all my bills on line. But I keep cash on hand. But my bills would be late. The only ones I pay by check car registration and taxes. If I pay with debt card it’s an additional 2% charge. The other day my debt wouldn’t work. The person at the gas station told me my bank was having issues. Well I guess I won’t get gas. They told me do it this way it will go through. It’s a very stressful time. Hope it clears up soon

My bank told me to NEVER pay for gas, groceries or anything else with debit cards. They said to use credit cards, as they will give you your money back if you are hit. My debit card was compromised three times, so now I have one credit card that gives me money back, and that is all I use. My debit card only comes out if I leave my credit card in my other shirt pocket, which happened two days ago.

Leave ONLY the amount needed to cover your bills, I pay by phone or direct pmt. The rest is withdrawn immediately n I use cash.

I bought a pack of wash clothes from ebay a few years back and someone took most of the $ from my account and I submitted my claim to social security and they refuse to listen.. I don’t like just in time anything. That alone stresses me out. Over a few years I got ahead on bills and pay a few months ahead. Not everything all in one month but one month this, etc. I worked over those years to collect a years worth of insurance, property taxes etc and pay the whole year at a time. I have the discipline and paper trails to see money in my checking or savings and not spend what I need for the yearly payments. I pay by check unless a place doesn’t accept and I’ll use a debit card. I pay bills as soon as they come in. I find great peace of mind.

We're under economic warfare as well as the Boarder catastrophe. Brics/digital currency.. Social credit score>LOL, who farted?.. etc. For example, My worry is like 7,000 in bank is now worth 70 dollars. Yeah, CS agents are crap these days. One way around it is get a credit card with that bank that you use. Put all your bills to be paid by the credit card. Set up payments ahead of time for the exact payment date. Then set up payment from your checking account on dates you want to pay your bills. You don’t have to worry about interest charges if all charges are paid by the due date. Then if system goes down it’s all set up . Then their credit card with the bank name on it should waive any late fees if their system goes down. Works for me.

Hey, Mr Tom... Prayers that by the time this comment comes through everything is all straightened out with your bank. A possible source of hope -- My bank uses a 3rd party bill paying service. In the contract for that service is a rule that if your bill isn't paid on time through no fault of yours, they will cover the late fee, if there is one. I truly hope that your bank has a similar type of "insurance" so that you don't have to worry about this again.

Hi 👋 Mr. Tom. I'm sorry to hear of your issues. I still go in person to pay bills when possible. Of course, I don't have much and don't have a lot of bills. I used to do the cash check m/o and mail. Walmart will cash your check and sell you a m/o. Bank will sell you a cashier's check. Now. I never trusted digital and I WAS many years ago a bank teller. I remember in the 80s they were having problems with digital accounts being "glitchy" with solar flares. There have been a lot of flares lately AND Chinese & Russian hackers have "supposedly" been hacking systems as part of a chaos attack in the future.... Yes utube was affected a lot!!! I'm not sure but I think most businesses wait about a week before marking your payment as late. At least that's what one of my creditors told me when I was worried about a late payment. Hope everything works out for you soon. God bless.

Hi, Tom. I pay my all my bills online. You didn't say what kind of bills you were paying. When I pay mine, they usually send me a confirmation in my email. I save those until I print them off. Sometimes I run out of printer ink, and in that case I save the confirmation in my bookmarks. I don't think you need to worry too much. Usually they wait at least a week before putting a late fee on. You will be fine.

I have an account that I've had for years. I went to the bank to make a transaction and the teller said " You could get 4.5% interest if you open a money market account. I asked what was the difference? She said " you just have to apply for the money market" I asked for some printed material to rake home and look at it. In the ,very very fine print, they added that if I signed their contract, I was giving my cellphone company consent to allow my bank access to my phone. Nothing is FREE folks. Always read the fine print.

My paychecks go into the bank by direct deposit. I don't like the idea of having to go pull out cash at the ATM. Sorry to hear about this. It shakes up your sense of security. It is also difficult to fix because of the lack of customer service personnel and their lack of training. Recently a check order was misdelivered and I was frantic with worry of having my checking account stolen for the whole weekend. It was very hard getting this straightened out and took time and persistence. If you do write checks always use a black indelible ink pen that cannot be erased from the check. Don't use debit cards either. Banks are slow to reimburse you if there is theft against your account and debit cards are easily hacked. Get a credit card and pay your bills online. You have my sympathy. Your bank should reimburse you for any. Hope it all works out. Take care.

Took my sister to run errands last monday. At our small town post office they were only taking cash. Credit card machine down. At the next biggest town ( county seat) where the Walmart is, the pharmacy was only taking cash. But the other cashiers couldnt take cash. Crazy!

Wait til everything goes over to digital money and not cash. Always keep some cash in your home, even just $100. This probably has to do with ATT going down. Your money is also insured by the bank. Also, if it's the banks' fault you should not be charged the bank should take care of it.I fear more for the people who bank by phone if their phone gets stolen .Some people even put their credit cards on their phones unfortunately you have to move with modern times and soon you will have to do everything yourself. Call the bank manager if you do not get a satisfactory answer.
