I have a garden, fruit trees and berry bushes and also some chickens. I share the extra with friends and neighbors that aren't able to afford things especially last yr when egg prices rose so high. I also shop what's on sale and that's what's on the menu no matter how much I'd like a steak. I'll wait for a sale. Stock the sale stuff and my pantry and freezer gets filled. I cook mostly from scratch and stay away from the soda and junk food cause I dont eat it anyway. I'm happy and healthy and try to stay that way. 🙏 that we all make it through this.

They don't care about seniors because they figure we won't be around long. Well we won't be because we can't afford to live. I wish we could see them when they're seniors struggling to live, but they won't be, they're already rich. I'm rambling because the jerks in charge tick me off, and there's nothing I can do about it except cut back and do without. Hopefully they won't be in Heaven with us, because they didn't have to struggle and suffer through life. Don't know if I'm making any sense to anyone, but this is how I feel. I put my life in God's hands, and that's where I get my comfort. God bless us all. ❤

My Dad always said if you can put back as much as they withhold from your check for Social Security, then you will be able to live once you retire. I remember while in college (1982), my Economics professor stated that Social Security would go under due to the government using it as a "petty cash" fund - the gov. was and still is borrowing money from Social Security - if the gov. would/could pay back all the money it's borrowed, then we would have the benefits we paid into and deserve. I read an article the other day that inflation was up 3.7% - not sure if that was for the year or for one month - either way, the 3.2% COLA raise is nowhere near what they should be giving. I was fortunate enough to work for the county and they withheld soc. sec. but also as a benefit for employees, they contributed to a state retirement. They also offered workers the opportunity to deposit money into a 401K. I am now 63 and have started to draw my reduced Social Sec. benefits as well as my state retirement. The difference in waiting was honestly not worth waiting on. I have yet to start drawing on my 401K - will leave that alone for as long as possible.

inflation, the stealth tax, is a real robber. the govt just prints money, and the dollars you save become worth less and less. so they will ''save'' soc sec, but by printing dollars to save it, the dollars are devalued to some point they don't buy enough of even basic goods, and people wind up on the street. my prop tax has gone from $70/year to $4000/year, as a graphic example. another is gasoline. i remember buying gas for the lawn mower @28 cents a gallon, now it's $4-$5 a gallon.

We are fortunate in our area that we get some assistance with our food budgets by going to a monthly food distribution pantry, known as Ruby's Pantry. For a donation of $25, we receive a share of various groceries worth $150 to $200 (no choosing). Every month on a particular chosen date which is different for each community, the distribution is organized and given out. The food selection changes every time, but you get a selection from each type of food group. This food comes from food factory production over-runs, discontinued food products, donations from grocery stores and commercial food processors often in bulk. The companies/stores that donate receive a tax benefit. This food is not time-expired, but would otherwise go to the landfill, so it is gathered by this organization and transported to various communities on a monthly basis for distribution. Ruby's started in Northern Minnesota 6 or 7 years ago in our area and has now grown to service the rest of the state, as well as North Dakota and parts of South Dakota and Wisconsin. There are plans for further expansions to the other neighboring states. There are no restrictions as to who can receive this food, it is open to all (whoever likes to eat) and you can purchase more than one share. The food distribution at the local level is handled by volunteers from the community and a portion of each share sold is distributed to the charities in the community. We are so fortunate that we've had this program for 6 years now in our community and the many people, including the soup kitchens it has helped to off-set the high price of food. Seniors, young families, the disabled, college students, the unemployed, social assistance recipients, the working poor have all benefited and has allowed them all to be food secure and eat better in our area.

I wasn't trying to contradict you, you made some valid points especially about federal workers, who gets to retire after what, 25 years with about half their salary and then social security when they get old enough. My point was, most people don't know how the government, basically raided the social security fund for general spending. That's how bill Clinton supposedly, had a balanced budget, which was a crock of crap!

The reason I am concerned is because I have heard rumors that they have considered lowering our social security to help balance our budget for the U.S. and also to have more money to send to other countries. If they do that then how will it affect thousands of seniors? It will not be very good that is for sure. I appreciated your talk on this and I learned so much. Thank you. Do take care.

Years ago, I met an 80 year old single man on a cruise ship that was doing exactly that in the winter months. For 6 months of the year he went on non-stop cruises because he said it was cheaper than living in a nursing home, the food and accommodation was significantly better, lots of activity, meeting new people and excellent entertainment. He was very agile, looked great and was having the time of his life. We saw him on a couple of our cruises, living in a Speedo swimsuit hanging around the pool during the day. Staff on all the cruiseships knew him and so did the Customs Officers. The other 6 months of the year he lived with his daughter.

(look what they did to martha stewart for what was called insider trading, yet they do the same as a normal process.) that would prevent the corruption that takes root with bureaucrats who become ensconced in power, like pelosi. --> ''Nancy Pelosi announces she's running for reelection The former House speaker announced Friday that she will run for reelection in 2024. She revealed her plans at a breakfast with volunteers in San Francisco and then followed up on X.'' ...........this is outrageous.

My father worked for SSA until he retired from Federal service after WW2. The problem, in his opinion, was when they (Congress) added "disability" to the system. Never part of the original program. It was originally a "retirement" program, not a "disability" program! Costs went crazy.

Now it’s disability, visiting border crossers, etc. SS was a trust fund you paid into and the government was basically a trustee. In reality, SS makes Bernie madeoff and Sam bankman fried seem like honest investors.

Hello from Oklahoma, Mr Tom! Love hearing your explanation for what’s going on with the COLA increase. I dare anyone from Congress to live on my monthly benefit. The divide gets larger every year. But I look for my blessings and take much comfort in what I’ve received. Much love to you and the Krew.❤❤

Hi, Mr. Tom. What chaps my corpulent buttocks is the fact that our wonderful government gives the illegal immigrants $2,000 per month. My social security isn't even that much! These people aren't even supposed to BE here!! 'Seems like the Ukrainian people are just so much more important to our government, too, and I'm tired of it! As for grocery prices, in January 2020, my grocery budget was about $250 to $275 per month. Now, it's $550 to $600, and that's just for my son and myself, and even so, there are a lot of things we're now doing without. That said, I am still thankful and grateful for what we do have. God is good to us. There are many who aren't as fortunate......But it still chaps me where I sit!!

Please provide a reliable source (that is, not Fox News, Truth Social, etc) for your claim that our government gives $2000 / month to illegal immigrants. People enter this country ilegally needing and wanting jobs. Many corporations, such as meat packing plants, will hire them, even if they don't have a valid social security number. So these illegal immigrants actually PAY into Social Security, but will never be able to claim benefits. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about ways to save money that I may not know, or may be doing incorrectly. I don't have energy to whine about things that aren't even true!

im a single old man and my groceries for 2022 cost 82 bucks a month . i eat meat for every meal . i see people in the stores with carts filled with colorful packaged up stuff . they should learn how to shop and how to cook . if i buy a store item with one speck of unnecessary packaging i cut off the packaging in front of the store and shove it in their trash can . im not their waste disposal chump .

Well Mr Tom the government gets to vote a raise for themselves each year. Now would be a good time for us old fellas to trade with them. Holy cow they don't even have to pay for insurance! Groceries for myself and you went up 25% at least in my area last year. Nobody said life is fair...no kidding. I'm wishing my knees were strong enough to garden.

Mr Tom, or anyone else who is having trouble making ends meet, check to see if you are eligible for Medicaid or it's sub programs QMB and SLMB. All these programs will pay your Medicare Part B premiums, thus increasing your Social Security check. Full Medicaid can pick up all the costs not covered by Medicare as well. There are income limits. SLMB has the highest income limit.

Get up the next day and do it again because we canr survivie on our fixed income even though ive been sick for 34 years I still have to force my body to do what it cant... CPI doesn't calculate food or energy with the rest of the things. When determining COLA. If it did we would be getting 10% cola. CPI does ad food and energy, to determine interest rate hikes. Go figure.

Hey, Mr. Tom. Well, I'm one of the lucky ones. 70 next spring, and still working at a good job with a strong company. My retirement plan for years was to get a little place like yours back in the south, where I could garden and pursue my hobbies. I've met my financial goals and can retire any time, but in this economic environment, with this administration, and the world looking the way it looks? Maybe I'd better not.

It's been already decided that CPP for 2024 increase will be just over 2%. The other defined pensions like HOOPP or OMERS etc. usually copycat the same COLA increase as what the feds determine for CPP. There may be a slight difference, but it's not much. At any rate, the increase for 2024 is well below the actual rate of inflation. It will continue to be a challenge to keep up with the inflation increases as our retirement incomes fall further behind. Actually the COLA is a misnomer because we aren't able to keep up with what they give us and fall further behind. Then to add further insult, the propaganda you get from the pension plans when they announce their miserly increase, they congratulate themselves on their generosity to us!

Here in UK certain benefits, esp disability and senior pensions are increased in Apr 24 by the national inflation rate for Sept 23. This year is was 6.7%. Food has increased on average by 14%…but certain other benefits such as unemployment the increase is at the govt’s discretion. But our food prices are way way lower than yours and our medications are free. I don’t know how you do it. Thinking of you
