My Basic Camping Setup - [ Tips For Beginners ]

This is my basic camping setup . Tips for beginners to get you started.
You don't have to spend a lot of money to really enjoy your first camping experience.
If you are a beginner to camping and looking for tips on how little amount of camping gear you need to go out and enjoy the Australian bush, this video will help you out.
Start off with some basic camping gear to see if you will enjoy camping.
I have been camping for well over 45 years, and this is all of the camping gear i need to setup out in the bush.
Don't worry if you see other campers with a lot of gear and all of the latest and greatest mods and cons.
Half of what they have may not suit the type of camping that you want to do.
One of the advantages with having a basic camping setup is, you don't have much camping gear to get setup.
The quicker and easier your camping setup is to put together, the more you will want to go camping.

Good vid. I use a 8L weed sprayer for the shower. Replace the nozzle with a garden hose head. Fill with 2L boiling and a few L of cold. Pump it up and your good to go. The sprayer also serves the handy purpose of a feet clean prior to bed, cleaning the dunny out, or squirting the kids. No power, use anywhere, hard to break, and you just upped your water carrying capacity by 8L.

When I first started out, I had a swag, 12 dollar chair, 20 buck gas camp stove in case, billy, frying pan and tarp. That was 20 years ago. Now i'm married and have a dodgy back its Oz tent and queen size blow up mattress and all the bells and whistles lol. Good times mate.

Hi Tim, I hope it’s ok to speak here. After 14 months of building my 200 series to be able to let a one legged man (me) go solo camping has arrived. All those videos of yours I watched and rewatched to shape my cruiser to suit me. Well today I am speaking to you from the cape. Tagged on with some guys that never met and we did 1/2 the Tele track with 3 water crossings…. Tomorrow is the obligatory picture from the top then head back. I know people are in lockdown down south and I do send them by sincere wishes and support through this time but the timings came together so I packed the car and just went. Wow!!! Never done anything like this before. If you put a heart rate monitor on me when we crossed the Cockatoo River I would sent it of the dial. Well spoken Tim. Ive been camping for a similar period and have similar set up (Except my swag is on a stretcher bed! LOL). The thing was when i started out there was a limited supply of camping accessories and gear, so you made do with the basics and it became habit.

my 2 cents on the shower, I’ve got one of the rechargeable 12v showers from kickass, no messy cords do deal with, just drop it in your bucket and your good to go, takes up no room at all

+1 for Southern Cross tents, Tim. Not fashionable, but simple and quick. Much lighter than an RV tent and could go in the back of the Patrol or on the roof. Plenty of room to stand up, or put a chair if the weather turns foul. Top quality, made in Bayswater with Australian canvas.

Less is more I reckon. When I started I had a bare bones Patrol and a swag. Used to go through Mansfield ,get some ice in the Esky and comfortably spend 1 or 2 days in the hills. Had a blast !! Nowdays I can't do without lockers , fridge , awning , solar panels , heated chairs ... Lol 🤣. As for the tent, I own a RV4 , and it's been through hell and back and it's been great ! Some advice though. If you go down that route. Definitely invest in the fly for it. More weather protection and keep the dew at bay. And more obvious thing is , it will be colder in there than a swag. I swag it in cooler months and Oztent warmer months. The air flow in them tents is awesome. 👍

These days health makes me have to be a bit more comfortable otherwise I couldn't get out into this great country. Hey Tim, love your videos mate! We try to keep our set up pretty simple. I go camping with my young kids regularly so have a tent rather than a swag. We have a 4 man tent with a tarp over the top for weekends away and a much larger three room Black Wolf tent and pergola when camping with the whole family. A table and a box full of kitchen utensils including a coffee plunger is essential. Also for the campfire we just use a cast iron dutch oven with tripod and also a flat skillet. We did pick up a basket for cooking marinated chicken wings and also we never forget the all important marshmallow forks. Happy camping!

The Zd30 made me rethink my set up. My campsite has gone from 45mins to set up to around 8mins. I go on a lot more trips now and am happier not having to worry about it if rains or packing up. Less is More!

Great video as usual tim. I made a solar shower made from Pvc Pipe and strap it to the roof. Fits 24 litres of water and painted black it absorbs some heat if its a sunny day. On the filler cap ive tapped in a tyre valve. Pump him upto 20 PSI and get plenty of pressure coming out the hose end.. Wifey and i can both shower for 2 nights including her washing her hair. Simple but works good! Can also add a billy or 2 of boiling water for those extra cold days!

I have seen some with a water setup in their vehicle with pcv piping filled with water and pressurised by tyre inflator. They’ve attached a shower head for washing.

It depends on what I'm doing as to how basic I go. Sometimes it's as simple as my swag (also stretcher since having both knees replaced) and bedding, something to cook on and with and my Esky. Otherwise it's an instant up tent, stretcher/bedding, stove and an instant up gazebo (sometimes), chair and table, gooking gear. Hubby won't let me have a pullout awning on the car. He doesn't camp so doesn't think it's needed. :/ My tent setup is 15 minutes total with everything set up. I don't reckon you need much to be comfy, so long as you can get a good feed and have a decent sleep then all is good.

G'day Tim, I confess to carrying too much stuff, but I do like your KISS approach. I have a pump up 5L pressure pack (like a weed sprayer) for the shower - cheap, simple and no power needed. I carry it half full and just add hot water. I have a Small gas cylinder converted to a fire pit - works well for one or two people, doesn't need much wood or take up much space, can still cook on it, and it doesn't take much water to extinguish fire. I have a darche soft roof top tent and it only weights 55kgs, it’s great for times when your travelling and stopping over night, it’s fairly quick to unpack. Also we have a ground tent in a pyramid shape and that’s better for when we have pulled up for a few days. Only issue is carrying a mattress around where the rooftop has it contained. Also they make shower awnings that might be the go for ya too.

Gday Tim My 30 second tent is the RV1, Its big enough for 2 really but i bought it for the pack up size. Its small enough to fit back tray of the twin cab, all the bigger ones required to go on the roof and they are quite heavy too. Great quality though and the awnings on them a re great, i have all the walls if i camp longer and you cant beat the set up on them. Cheers

Cracking video mate with brilliant advice. My setup is pretty much what you have excluding the chainsaw, gas stove cast iron cookware. I like to keep my setup simple cooking on butane stove (its slow) & not being seen by others that might be passing. Shower. You might want to think about using a 5/10Lt garden pump pressure spray unit. Mix some hot water with the cold.

When I take the kids there’s a lot more I just bought a joolca setup it’s awesome for hot showers and turns into a kitchen sink to wash up all your dishes the girls where not to keen on digging holes 🕳 to go to the toilet 🚽 so the shower awning doubles as a toilet and I bought a portable one yet to test it out yet I have a soft top ARB RTT and on my own it’s bit to hard to pack up get back into the cover so in future going to grab a hardtop one for sure I just bought a new swag for myself kids love there swag can’t beat them for quick setup and easy light weight when packed up depending where we go I’ve got a few cast iron pots that I take and just got a spun steel one to try out love all your camp fire cooking I’ve learnt so much hopefully this covid stops so we can get out of this lockdown and go explore thanks again Tim

Great vid mate when I was younger I slept in the cars and trucks either just on backseat or in the patrols on an air bed but recently brought a Jayco camper and loved just the back said no winding for so I traded that and brought a full size caravan but finding poor workmanship on a repair has taken nearly 16mth to get it fixed but I think I have finally found a great caravan repairer that I won’t be letting go of lol but I’m thinking of going back to the air bed in the y62 for weekend travels to get out more

I used to recommend friends what I think they need to get started camping. But now I make them ask themselves this question, "would you see yourself camping often?".

I like the way that you’ve cut weight out of your GU and simplified your gear list.I like to set up my tarp(6x7mtrs) when I go up the Victorian bush.Being a hunter I often need my 4x4 to be independent of my camp setup as I like to explore different parts of the bush during the day.A quality tarp is a bonus when Mother Nature throws some wild weather your way.I’m busy packing for 4 days up high this weekend.I can’t wait.Cheers, Rob.

Love the KISS principle! My setup is very similar to yours. I have a battery-powered shower setup, it drops into a bucket and Volare instant shower, for me, it works well. oh and don’t forget a small foam mat to stand on while showering. Very impressed you use chap/chainsaw pants. As you say they are a must-have. Two "extra" bits of kit l take are a wedge in case my chain saw gets jammed or pinched and small wooden camp stool that I use as a side table for my G&T's and cheese board....... Any fool can be unfortable

My basic setup is 1. Awning 2. Tarp or rubber mat on the ground 3. Swag 4. Camp chair I try and keep it simple when I head out. Nothing worse then spending an hour setting up and then another hour packing up the next morning. I can setup/pack up all that in about 30 minutes and have a cold one cracked open while the other guys are still setting up and in the morning, I can be loaded and ready straight away. The back of my ute is pretty simple. Food box, cooking box, vehicle box full of tools, recovery gear etc, sleeping gear box & a long handle shovel. On the back seat it's basicly some clothes, maps and handheld UHF, food and a few other small things. I try and keep it simple. Nothing I hate worse is having to unpack everything to find something everytime. Keep it simple and it makes the trip a lot better

Another great video Timbo, definitely not knocking OZ tents, they are a great product but they pack up to a length of 2.1 meters which can be a challenge depending on what vehicle have. The Black Wolf turbo tents are well worth a look if you want to pack it inside the car. Keep the videos coming 👌

Tim. I will guarantee you, if you get a Glind shower type system set up, you will never look back. Have it plumbed to the bullbar with a marine grade switch so you don't have to even pop the bonnet. By far one of the best additions to my set-up. Hot water in any conditions. As far as a 30 sec tent. No such thing. Any companies claiming super quick set ups I look at with caution. If your referring to those OzTents I'd highly recommend you check them out first which I'm sure you already have and are aware of them. They are huge!!!!! By the time you get them off the roof, out of the bag, folded out, awning up, poles and all pegs in place you could probably do your swag two time over. If not three. Like anything canvas they are very hot in summer. You really need to set up a good silver reflective tarp for it to be cool and properly waterproof. Keep what you've got but get out of that swag and into a flip out Stretcher Swag like the Jet Bunker. I have a Dune version (identical imo and heaps cheaper) and it combined with a no expenses spared SIM, they are by far the best sleep I ever have had in my 40 odd years of camping. I have the Exped MegaMat 10XLW. Not cheap but worth every dam cent. Cheers. 🙂

How about a black pvc pipe mounted to the roof and use that for a shower. To wash clothes , fit a bucket , fill 3 quarters full of water and chuck it some wash powder with your clothes. Put the lid on and whilst you’re driving the clothes will wash by all the agitation .

i use the swag uder the awning for 1-2 dayers. but have a 4 person airtent for 2 days or more, far better as you get older, even if it takes 30 min to set up haha

Hi Tim. Same setup here, well over the other side of 40... Swag, stretcher, 270° Awning, chair with table (essential), Bunnings table. 5 as well. Never had a 30 second tent and never would. Mate traveled with one and we all laughed every time he set it up... Not 30 seconds, Heavy, pain in the ass thing. When its wet it's wet forever. Covered in dirt, PITA to lift on and off roof rack. Try the stretcher option for the swag mate. Nice to sit on the edge and put your britches and boots on. By the way, just got the 134 boxes from your vides, NICE upgrade from the Bunnings tubs. Yeah a shower unit would be pretty mint especially to keep the misses happy haha I was look at one of those 30seconds but because of the pack up length and not having a roof rack on my hilux. I ended up going the black wolf 240 turbo tent. Which fits neatly in the tray, but the RV 30second tent would be ideal for your patrol Cheers Marty

Gday Tim, I went down the path of the oztent RV1 a year or so ago. Mainly that model because it’s the smallest when packed up. Ive got a stretcher which fits perfectly in the tent which increases the amount of storage internally but recently just started rolling my swag inside the tent without putting the hoop up. When staying in places a bit longer I like the extra protection from the elements and the fact all my clothes are with me inside. Also the oztent has a good size awning out the front to put all my camp gear under, leaving my car free to drive and get wood etc.

Awesome Batesy. My setup is nearly identical to yours - less is more! I've learnt a few good tips from you like using plastic containers! I ditched my 2 stroke chainsaw for a Ryobi 18v battery powered one. It's awesome for basic firewood cutting and the occasional tree down over the track, and with two 5Ah batteries I can use one and recharge one - gets about 30 minutes running time per battery. And I'm a bit of a tech nerd, I take a battery powered AM/FM/SW radio and late at night I love trying to listen to rdio stations from a long way away in Oz. With the right atmospherics I can pickup SW stations broadcast from Asia region too, and I'm in southern NSW. I'd be keen to know if you take a first aid kit? I've just got a basic St John Ambulance motorist one, I'm thinking of getting something a bit more comprehensive.

Can’t beat an electric chainsaw Tim! Plenty of power and the battery lasts more then long enough. No need to carry stinky unleaded. 30 sec tents are good but heavy. I’ve seen plenty of comments here recommending other things Shower tent, whether a roof rack mounted or just a pop up ensuite. I don’t bother with a tent if the MRS isn’t coming. Get a lithium rechargeable drop in pump. Charge while you’re driving and take up no room. Keep it up tim Cal

I'd recommend a Southern Cross Tent. We've had one for 20 years, tough as boots. Australian made in Melbourne, all tough canvas. Peg out 4 corners, one pole in the centre up as quick as an umbrella). Puts up with any weather and folds up so much more compact than a 30 second tent (which I bet is made overseas. Just our experience!! I'd recommend checking out their website.

The one mentioned here is good, just the central pole but if you're on you're own no probs setting up a bed inside and getting comfy. We had similar and plenty of the tour companies use them due to set up time and space taken when packed. Worth a look if changing from a swag.

Can't beat the quality. Folds up to just over a metre square. It folds around the square frame of the roof. It's really quick to do, husband gets me to do that part, so easy. You could chuck it in the 4wd or on the roof. They are fantastic in wind, no bending joints, just real old school tough parts. Great headroom too. We can fit both of us and our grown kids, but we have comfort of just the two of us now on stretchers. Heaps of room. For you, you could fit just your self and your table in the bad weather. Very versatile. They can customise your tent too, we have windows that zip open from the inside, from heavy canvas, they are excellent. Also have optional PVC windows that zip on the outside so you can look out when it's raining and to give light. A bit fancy, but useful! Love your videos, wish we could camp as often as you. Hi Tim, I know you have said “no rooftop tent for me” before, but I have used the tents on the ground and now I use a Darche rooftop, I have weighed it with bedding in at 60kg , I have it mounted so I can winch it off into my shed roof area , I never have ants up north or get cold, the 30 sec Oztent 3 is 21kg a single stretcher is 7kg plus the bedding, so the rooftop is only a 28ish kg weight penalty for the big trips, but in the warmer months the ventilation is amazing, Don’t get me wrong, I like swags , but for the $1200 for a Oztent 3 with stretcher, against the same for a R-top for desert or sand trips 👍, swag for the High county because of hight clearance 👍 , If I could only get the Lady to swag in the HC 😂

Climbing up & down ladders Have to pack up every time I want to go for a drive Extra fuel usage with wind drag I know they work for so many people, but I’ll never be one of those. Lol. A cheap thing to make for toilet paper. Get a bit of 100mm pvc pipe and 2 caps . Cut pipe to length of a dunny roll plus 15mm. Jam caps on keeps ya bog paper dry and clean . Cheers pat

It's funny you mention the 30 second tents You've really inspired me to look at the weight of the gear I'm taking with me and I want to get a 30 second tent too (oztent rv3) because that will replace my awning and swag. If it wasn't so long it would let me remove my roof rack (all its being used for is my awning and it's 50kg!!) But unfortunately I need the roof rack to transport it. I might look into getting the 2 or 3 bar style roof rack which is around 10kg and selling my awning (will always keep the swag) but if it wasn't for the length, I think the rv3 would make much more sense to a lot of people

Gday Josh, Yeah, weight reduction of camping gear is vital. You can certainly reduce a lot of camping gear weight if you look outside the box from what most people use. I’ve ended up getting the RV3 tent. Quick and very easy to setup. I use mine for longer trips. I will always have my swag for some of the shorter over nighters. Oh nice! What are your thoughts on the build quality, would you buy it again and is it easy to load onto the roof? You can get really technical with it in terms of wind resistance too, the rv3 would have much less wind resistance on the roof vs a swag. I'm still not sure if I'll get an rv3 or keep the swag but I like the idea of trying new things in order to potentially find a better camping solution. The weight saving is good too

I have rollers at the back of my roof rack, so getting it up and down from the roof is really quite easy. I will never not use my swag. But some longer trips planned for this year, i will take the RV3 for sure.

@@JustOneKnight The 270 degree awnings are a great idea for shelter. But for me, it's one item i will never fit on my 4WD. They are heavy and the whole thing has to be set up. How much weight Im carrying is high on my thoughts when it comes to accessories. They are a personal preference, but i like the single roll out awning and if im base camping up for a few days or longer, i will attach my extension awning sheet, which gives me plenty of shelter. Nice setup young Tim,very tricky to plan what to take on camp trips because of the weight factor,l have a 4 d cell battery shower head which l drop in a bucket of warm water for a shower. I bring my farm boss 230 chainsaw everywhere l go and need a handy bag like yours,where abouts do you you store that and what time do you go too bed. The log splitter is the only thing l miss and don't bring on my big trips up here in cane toad country.

Agree, rv3 would replace your extra awning, good tent! Plus use a basic swag to keep mattress and bedding quick and easy. The worst thing about a tent is forever rolling sleeping bags. One tip, the tent will be a bit colder than the swag.

G'Day Tim, I love your videos, Well I've been shopping in lockdowns, LOL. Waiting for the rain to finish so i can see if it all fits in to my car. i basically, upgraded from esky to 12V system. One thing, I have never camped by myself, usually with mates or family, how do you find it? Mark

G'day Mark, Going from the esky which i think we all started out with and then now using the 12 volt fridge, it's a game changer thats for sure. Solo camping is unreal. I just like to peace and quiet. Its amazing what you hear when it's just you. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim

My setup pretty close... gazebo, more adjustable etc.. table, same as yours.. chainsaw, 1 axe.. butane cooker, no gas bottle.. good chair.. 23zero double swag.. crates.

I've got 4 items to set up. A pod on the back for privacy when nature calls and shelter while cooking if it's wet, awning if I want it and my chair. My bed is in the back if my Pajero so no need to set that up all the time and lastly what ever I'm cooking with. Table drops down on my back door so really no set up.

Also Tim you carry heaps more than I do lmfao. I've got 1 drawer for mostly cooking gear, a drawer fridge and than it's just slap in my bedding, clothes and fill the fridge with food and drinks.
