Thanks for the vid! I've been to App Ski countless times, Sugar some, but I don't think I've ever been to Beech before unless I was very young. It was always the furthest from me, and I had often heard 4WD was a must, but the drive up looks fine. Do you know how well they keep their roads plowed? ...The wider slopes look great for carving, and the trees and jumps would be fun as well. I may have to find my way up there in the next few weeks.
@itsjusthal96134 жыл бұрын
The roads have been perfect every time we’ve gone up there, I’m sure if it’s actively dumping snow they could get a little dicey. The runs and snow conditions have been awesome for carving this winter

Me and my buddies went up on a friday and it snowed about 7 inches that morning. We had a back wheel drive SUV and almost made it up the backside of the mountain on a road called Buckeye road. The front road to the mountain was our second option and it was almost perfect to drive on. We made it up even tho people said we wouldn’t. i would say try and go on a day where it doesn’t snow that much but if you have 4wd then you should be perfectly fine.

Thanks Hal, great video work. I know of 3 diff ski areas in NW NC, and I think one in NE TN. Big question.... If you had 10 years left to live this life,, which area would you choose to live near? (I also love cycling and hiking) as I bet you do too. Thank you.

Awesome vid man! I was up there 2 weekends ago. I'm itching to go again. I live about 1.5 hours away from both Beech and Sugar. Of the three between Beech, Sugar, and App, which is your favorite? Also, how do you like the dope jacket? I'm thinking about picking up one of their jackets.
@itsjusthal96134 жыл бұрын
I always ride beech because I have a season pass but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Sugar has the longest runs, beech has good runs and a good terrain park (which is why I go there), app has a good terrain park and it’s the cheapest, but the runs are short. I love my dope snow jacket. I have the Wylie so it’s the lightest one they make so if it’s below around 30 degrees I need several layers underneath. It’s super comfy though and seems to be very durable so I expect it’ll last a long time.
@wakeboard1474 жыл бұрын
I live in Statesville NC so about 1.5 hours away as well, but went to App Ski very often (season passes; 90x one season) during college at App State. Similar to what Hal said, Sugar is a good choice for long runs and carving. They usually have a small terrain park open with a few small rails/pipes/ramps; nothing like App Ski though. It can feel crowded most weekends, especially holidays which I avoid now. It helps if you can stay on the blues/blacks for shorter lift lines away from the greens. They seem to always have the snowblowers on which is both good and bad (spraying in ur face/goggles which is sometimes hard to avoid). Sugar also feels 'corporate' run, and is little more pricey. App Ski is great for terrain park boxes/rails/pipes and small/medium jumps ($5 season park pass), but with shorter runs. It feels less crowded (unless holiday weekend) and the lift lines move along very well. If I'm teaching friends to ski or snowboard, or they're still beginner, I take them here. They have some great instructors too (and I'm sure Sugar does as well). By afternoon/night, the snow can get a bit choppy; first chair at open on groomed slopes is amazing though. App Ski is family owned (I've met the owners a few times years ago, nice people), and a little less pricey. I don't think I've been to Beech before so I can't compare it, but I will likely go soon. Once a year, I try to go to either Winterplace for a larger mountain, or my absolute favorite, Snowshoe for a huge mountain (but long drive).

Great video! We're first time Beech goers this weekend. I noticed you're wearing Dope. Do you mind sharing if it kept you warm? We just bought 4 Dope jackets and I'm unsure if they'll be enough when it's 20 degrees at night!
@itsjusthal96134 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Hope y’all have fun! I’m wearing the Wylie Patch jacket which is the lightest one they have, so you may have gotten a heavier one than me. The light one like I have is definitely better for warmer weather but it’s great for breaking any cold wind so as long as you layer up you should be good to go!
@itsjusthal96134 жыл бұрын
Also, I get cold much faster than most people I know so even if I think it’s cold you’d probably be fine

Awesome, thanks for the input. 3 of us have the Wylie too and one has a traditional jacket from Dope. I'll definitely layer up. You make those jumps look so easy and fun. I enjoyed the video. I see this was shot on a Wednesday.... Question: what are the lift lines like on the weekends? I'm thinking visit this place and/or Sugar mountain on a Sunday and Monday as soon as they reopen in November. It looks like Beech and Sugar open WAY earlier than places in WestVirginia and Wisconsin for some reason; I'm itching to try my new skis lol. Thanks for your help bro.
@itsjusthal96133 жыл бұрын
Thank you, means a lot to get comments! Lift lines at beech get long, but they look scarier than they are. Maybe a 20 minute wait, but for a short run it can be annoying. Beech usually has two lifts running to the top and the one by the black diamond is usually much shorter than the other, that’s my pro tip. I can’t speak for sugar bc I haven’t spent much time there. Have fun on the new gear when the time comes!

They are steep for around here but one can easily control the decent. When we race, we may get up to 40 or 50MPH but most recreational skiers are closer to 10 or 15MPH

What were the effect of Covid on this place? Hope they aren't strict on wearing masks. Also are there any training courses?
@itsjusthal96133 жыл бұрын
Last winter you were required to wear masks when waiting in line for the lift, and inside any buildings. Not sure what the policy will be this year. Strictness was kind of unpredictable all year, sometimes they were and sometimes they weren’t. Beech has an area specifically for learning but I usually suggest just going for it and learn on the way down. The learning areas aren’t usually steep enough to get a real feel for it and they’re usually crowded
