For those of you armchair Berklee experts, yes, this is what I auditioned with. No, the audition is not for you to "show off". It is designed to show that you have timing, and know your way around the guitar. The piece doesn't have to be ball-bustingly difficult. If I knew everything already I wouldn't need to go to Berklee.
For all of you saying "Berklee is a waste of time" My reply is, I am 41 years old and I enjoy playing. I am only going there because I have the opportunity to do so an I enjoy getting more knowledge about how to better utilize my guitar.
I chose this piece in honor of my dead stepfather who introduced me to Santana. Also, this song is the first song that I learned on guitar and was the song that made me want to play guitar when I was a kid. It is a piece that has meaning to me and that's why I chose it.
Thank you all for watching.

Another note to everyone saying "is this all it takes?"... Berklee wants your money. They're a business. There are VERY few who are so incredible that they attend on a large scholarship but in order to serve those, there must be many more who pay full or close to full price. Music school is easy to get into provided you're decent and check all the boxes they're looking for. This audition was solid. It doesn't necessarily show extreme proficiency on the instrument, but Mike's timing, tone, phrasing, and vibrato was spot on. Congrats man. Enjoy your time there if you decide to attend.

You are a rude person. I don't know where to begin with your response to his performance. I have never heard of you, your music or your band. Today is the first and last time I waste my time listening to your yacht rock. I tried to disect your response for your point. But, your point is to put the guy down at every angle. I listened to your music, you are typical. You use too many presets and loops. You can buy your "premium tone" at Guitar Center like everyone else. "This audition was solid. It doesn't necessarily show extreme proficiency on the instrument, but Mike's timing, tone, phrasing, and vibrato was spot on. Congrats man. Enjoy your time there if you decide to attend.". Are you serious? You can not walk around like that in the real world outside of your mind talking to people much less good musicians like that. Also, you do UNDERSTAND that he was playing a Carlos Santana jam. That is why it sounded so good. I am a musician also. Don't ask to see my video because that is garage unless it is footage from playing a sold out concert in fron of thousands of people. You should not belittle people. "

@@Keith85210 wow, that was a roller coaster. My comment was addressed specifically to the arrogant commenters who have no idea what it takes to enter music school. Mike is a solid guitarist. Solid tone, intonation, phrasing, rhythm chops, lead chops, etc. I stand by what I said. If you want the definition of rude, I'd direct you to the comment I'm replying to, which is yours. No one asked you to listen to my music and I'm really not interested in listening to yours, but thanks for clearing that up ;)

Yeah, he's playing it with every ounce of inflection the original had. And that is what matters. I see about 60 tribute bands a year, and even the ones that flat out nail it, don't get the inflection he's playing. I do get it because everything I play I play for inflection, and I don't achieve this. Spectacular work, and perfect choice that made him stand out. Also I think he has a slight sweetened temperament that maybe the original had? Great stuff!

That's awesome! I'm 38 myself, and I've been a Refrigeration/HVAC technician since I was 19. I worked so hard at my apprenticeship, years of working 13 hour days then going to night school to get various licenses. Anyways, I was electrocuted and had some damage to my heart last year. I got the surgery, which saved my life, but I couldn't go back to my old job as my heart isn't great. So yeah, all that work gone, and i didnt even get my final paycheque, let alone any sort of compensation. My union didnt help me, and no lawyers will go near a Union company.. It's not all bad though, as I was burnt out on that trade years ago. There's so many assholes, and crooked businessmen that expect you to break the rules to line their pockets, then they do the same to you. I felt like I couldn't leave as I'd invested so much time into certification. But I've been thinking differently lately, and now I'll be going back to school to do something I really want to do; Antique Doorknob restoration!! Jk, I haven't decided yet.

Just a little music history for those who do not know. Black Magic Woman was written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. A couple of years later, Santana covered it on their Abraxas album in 1970. My favorite guitarist of all time, Neal Schon, joined Santana the next year at age 17. A couple of years later, Greg Rollie and Schon broke off and formed what eventually became Journey.

Congratulations! I was at Berklee back in 76-77 as a Performance Major in Bass. There were about 300 Bass students that year. I figured I was about ninth from the bottom. The incredible musicianship you will see just walking through the cafeteria while people do their homework and play through the 'Real Fake Books' is magical. I was too chickenshit to dive in the way I needed to, having to commute 45 miles back and forth, so yeah it was a waste of time, not mine, their's. I suggest the following, play, play, play, do it all. If someone invites you to sit in in a practice room, do it. You'll never know who will meet. If you can live in Boston, just jam with everybody you can 16 hours a day, It can be a wonderful thing. I used to see Bandleaders come in and just grab students or even the teachers right out of class, to go on the road for a tour. Things were pretty casual back then. Good luck on your journey.

@@brianbaker8978 Thanks, but I'm no Mickey Spillane. Berklee was definitely an interesting place back then. You could go to school on a Monday and find one of your teachers hungover sleeping it off on the sidewalk along Mass Ave. Many of them were quite derelict, but man, they could play. Lot's of incredible musicians running in and out of that place. Phil Wilson the trombonist was there, I was in one of his classes for ear training, Sometimes he would play his trombone and you'd swear you could see his emboucher'e coming out the bell. He was great. Woody Herman was always coming in and taking either Phil or one of his best students to go play some gigs with his 'Thundering Herd' group, so you never knew if you were going to have that class the next week. Good times though.

@D G Apparently you've never commuted in and out of Boston on a regular basis, it is a killer. While I played in a few different rock, dance, wedding bands in the clubs on the South Shore, I eventually married and got into computer programming and IT, and my music career just became jamming with buddies on the weekends. Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans. Soon to retire at 70, and maybe refocus on playing music more. And you?

I went to Berklee long time ago. My rating was a 2 coming in. I skipped class a lot and took my gear into a practice room and practiced for 8+ hrs every day and night. I had guys that were rated 6-9 knocking on my door asking me to sit in with their session. They down rate if you can't sight read. Best days of my life. The talent there was mind blowing. Wish I could have stayed there longer. Playing with great musicians really elevated my playing. You are in these sessions and listening to how phenomenal the other players are was living the dream

For the most part, Berklee rewards you "Carte Blanche" with regards to the various gigs/music jobs that are available, especially with regard to recording/session and live performance gigs. Some of my favorite artists are Berklee alums such as Hiromi (Uehara), m'boy Marco Panascia, Esperanza Spalding. Others are not, though they have "Berklee ties" such as Pat Metheny (taught Guitar at Berklee early on) and "The Fuze" David Fiuczynski (a Guitar professor at Berklee). Did Jaco (do we really need to mention a last name here?) go to Berklee. No. "Sky's the limit, if you feel The Spirit!"

Hey Mike, guitar teacher here. I bet your playing has improved a lot in the year since you posted this! I just want to say first congratulations on choosing to enrich your life further through education. And excellent audition! I think the one aspect I would work on if I were your teacher would be letting all the notes sustain for their full value. Santana was a master of sustain, especially on bends. It's so epic when he holds those notes and they reach the edge of feedback! Having your notes sustain until the next note is played will take your sound to new heights. You're already a good player though!

I'd say go for more vibrato on the bends to get more of a laid back and confident feel, and pay close attention to when you kill the notes you play, not only when you hit em, that's gonna be a big game changer in terms of groove that often goes unnoticed Other than that, you hit it spot on, loved the parts where you went slightly off beat for a different feel Music schools always look more for potential rather than finished, polished perfection, cause you can't really improve perfection And I'm seeing a lot of it here Rock on my guy

I thought I'd just learn how to comp so my friends can sing. Then I started checking some theory, I begun to practice singing..and now I'm thinking that it would be nice to actually perform one day, which is definitely not in my character. Just saying that do what you love, it's never too late. Surre the age restricts things we can achieve, because reality, but it should never restrict us of having fun and doing what we like.
