Life-Like is such a strange beast. On one hand, they did make a lot of cheap and nasty toy-grade trains as you mentioned, but they also made Proto 2000, one of the best HO scale lines for the money.

The 2-8-2 locomotive is equipped with a smoke unit. It shouldn't be run unless there's fluid in it. Otherwise the heater element will burn and melt the plastic shell. I'd also reccomend putting the decoder in the BC Rail Dash 9, especially if yout put all the detail parts on it.

AHM=Old Tech. You were absolutely right about the pickups on alternate sides, very standard in the past. Where the steam loco is concerned, Chessie actually did run one painted like that for a steam special. Late 70's? It was larger than a mikado, though. Reading 2-10-4? Not sure, but close enough. Also of note- I think the Model Power F unit is an F2 (read early F3). Nice haul.

FYI; when looking at the bottom of the fuel tank and you see that 4 hole [pattern it is athearn (2 holes for switchers) That is the easy way to spot Keep in mind the inside have changed over the years. You see different types of flywheels , some without. And extra weights. And sometimes slightly different wheel sets

Nice haul Dave. The Southern Pacific is an Athearn H24-66 Trainmaster. The PMI Santa Fe is an FP45. Almost looks like it has Athearn tooling inside. The CN 6511 is a Model Power F2A. Hope that helps you. ENJOY!

Thanks Ean. Any idea what the Union Pacific is? It's the quietest runner I have ever owned. It has a large motor, two flywheels, and a small motherboard on top. Very heavy too.

@@ScottRails That is a Life-Like Proto 1000 F3A. This was Life-Like's path to manufacturing locos with similar tooling to Athearn.

@@eanferrell Just be aware of the proto gear issue. They copied the blue box, but the copy had cheaper gears. Some use blue box wheels sets to fix

My personal favourite has got to be the 2-8-2 steam loco Dave. I'd certainly fit the decoder onto that last engine that you ran,it really deserves it.

@@ScottRails if has the open blue box motor be sure to get a DCC board that can power it. They take a little more power than some cheap DCC boards can't handle

All are favorites in my book, i have that same chessie tender behind a Lionel HO 4-6-2, sadly its missing parts and is a very unsual looking and oddball 0-6-0, but yeah Lionel made ho back then in the 40s and early 2000s and they do again now though its not as cool The BC Rail is An Athearn Dash 9, BC Rail Dash 9S were known as C44-9WL, and hade a Canadian style Wide Cab, which a majority of the bc rail dash 9 fleet CN Still owns to this day, tho very few still wear bc rail paint. Their cousins the C40-8M Cowl unit bodied dash 8s are sadly being sent for scrap by CN, but they are quite iconic locomotives Fun Fact: BC Rails Standard Horn, The Nathan Air chime Co K5H, was used for the sound of the razor train in a top rated sequel to a popular video game series called half life 2 since BC rail later CN Ran down into Seattle across from where Valve, who made HL2, as well as being used in various movies and tv shows as a stock sound effect, and that SP Trainmaster is nice, SP mainly used them in commuter service with Bi level commuter cars, i haven’t seen any pictures of them pulling freight at all but eh google doesn’t show what i always want lol! Great Video As Always Dave!, as a fan of CSX and Chessie, that sd40 is just awsome, better to buy new old stock than trying to buy all brand new stuff that costs an arm and a leg, I’ll gladly buy an athearn bluebox over a newer model anyday if it means better running from the start!, and keep up the good work and amazing content!

Thank you so much. I also love the Athearn blue box stuff. I'm not sure I will ever be able to justify spending 300+ dollars on a loco, just because it makes noises and has more detail, plus my eyesight can't tell the difference, lol.
