@@rgnichols567 Get yourself a new ham radio and never look back. Most can be easily modified to transmit on all frequencies by removing a diode or something similar. I bought an Icom 706mk2g new years ago and will never buy another cb. The problem with the cbs is when they break, you can't find anyone to fix them. I've got a nice Galaxy Pluto right now in need of repair and can't find anyone I trust to do a good job.

I built a 4 element yagi , very similar to that 30 plus years ago. The reflector and directors do not need to be isolated from the boom , only the directly driven element, I used a Hy Gain BN 400 beam balun and short jumper to each half of the driven elements, same 2 inch spacing and isolation from the boom

That looks excellent. That is a broad spacing between the elements which not only allows you to achieve a great match, but also (in theory) favors a stronger rear null at the expense of slightly reduced overall directional gain. If a person wanted to get highest gain in a beam and cared less about a strong null in back, they would go down to something as tight as 50 inch spacing and to get a good match, do something like a gamma match or hairpin on the solid and/or grounded radiator/mast which would also be a stronger and grounded design. Your new antenna should really kick ass and hold up well, nevertheless! The 10meter beam I am laying out in the parched grass in the back yard right now is a 16 foot aluminum painters pole with two short aluminum tube stingers screwed to the ends, while struggling to build a hairpin beta or gamma match with odd materials laying about. Reflector is two crappie/panfish poles butted together with a 1" tube as a coupler. With some copper foil leftover from industrial processes I happen to have, I am wrapping the entire fiberglass reflector element in copper foil about twice as heavy as reynolds wrap. It looks like a golden javelin. Boom is a convenient 7 foot fiberglass pruners pole. How did you cut your plexiglass so neatly?

I just got into gmrs radios and I have begun building antennas. Very fun hobby. Working towards my amateur license soon. I just constructed a copper yagi gmrs vhf. Andnit works good I need parts to get my gamma match solid but the antenna works well and has a lot of gain

@thechristianbiker812 in my experience it's a lot based on your local topography. I can get a pretty steady 35 miles to a repeater in my area. days good propagation days I can get around 40 miles. Reaching a repeater that is. Simplex radio to radio I can average around 15 miles max in my area. Def varies based on terrain. I'm in north east Ohio.

@thechristianbiker812 of course it all depends on location. Radio and antenna. A base antenna around 25 to 30 ft does well in a lot of areas with a good antenna or one atkeast tuned for gmrs. Sometimes the 70cm dial band antennas are not quite good enough swr wise and tuning to do good for gmrs freq. I love building and doing. I am a ham operator now and I built my own gmrs repeater here in my hometown so it's been fun and i love the hobby. Gmrs is what got me into radio and i will def. Be continuing it for the matter of family comms. Imo a good quality radio meaning a better name brand thay baofeng will do you wonders. The cheap radios can get u started but. A yaesu or a icom handheld is def worth the money for range and reliability. I have 3 baofengs that no longer work. So sometimes the money pays

I have one of those old TV rotator motors which was still attatched to an old TV antenna I was given. But I don't have any of the other components for it. I would like to use it on a CB antenna. But I have no idea what the correct voltage is supposed to be that the rotator motor uses. Do you or anybody else out there know what is the correct voltage that it takes to run the rotator motor? Is it AC or DC voltage and does it operate on 12 volts DC or 120 volts AC? Thank you or anybody else in advance that can provide me with such information. I made a direct dipole feed element 12' long , 6' element spacing from scrape antennas in 1982. on a 30' pole i spoke all over the world on a cobra 148gtldx on 12 watts and the standard mic.

What I use for element insulation is Stauff Hydraulic pipe mountings on top of aluminium flat bar or plate. It's much more robust. To terminate your coax to the driven element; drill a small hole through the element each side and use a stainless metal thread and nuts and connect the cable with electrical terminals. Use a 1:1 current balun / choke in the coax.

I built this antenna so that channel 38 is in the middle of it's frequency coverage. it will easily do 40 channels up and down from 38, and still have a good SWR reading. Good luck with your antenna, 73's

So, I would guess by mounting the reflector directly to the boom, element spacing and element length may need to be more radically adjusted where as insulated from the boom, the dipole formula and 5% longer reflector may get you closer from the get go???

Nah. A lot of guys use numbers for their handle. Sometimes the old heads use the last of their license numbers back when CB required one.

What was the SWR once you raised it above the house? The higher the better on the flatside. Looks like your sweet spot.

Yup, it went flat on channel 19, and 1.1 on 1 and 40. it ended up having an SWR of 1.5 or less from 26.5 - 27.9 mhz. Thanks for watching, Take care.

On the 2 element yagi...I use to have one home made also and they work very good ,I made some DXs to Canada, Europe, Africa, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand the Caribbean and Chile...at only 15' from the graund whit 30 Watts from my HR 2510..all.. I like it, really clean construction. I've always had the best luck with .2 wavelength and yours is real close, 86.5" being ideal from what I've seen, but at .225 you may have a bit more gain and a slightly less F-B but I'd take it! You might check out an Omega match - it's much better than a Gamma and is a balanced match! I hope I get to DX with you soon, who do I listen for on 38Lsb? - World Radio # ?

how does your 2el "yagi" compare to a single element dipole, any gain over the single element dipol ? the footpointresistance will not be 50Ohm, when there is the second element or more elements. what does the SWR do, if you turn up the calibration knob of that SWR-meter to the max, still around 1,2 or does it go to like 2.2 or even higher ?

the SWR meter I used is part of an antenna analyzer, it does not have a calibration knob, it has a frequency adjustment knob. With the antenna 28 feet off the ground it has a resistance of 49 ohms, and 1 to 1 SWR on channel 19.

To go from a 2 element beam as .22 wave length (appx 8') to a 55 foot boom for a 7 element boom (using the same .22 wave length spacing) "ain't worth the hassle or trouble" for only 6 db gain (1 s-unit on the receiving station). MJ didn't mention but the .22 spacing is for maximum forward gain. You can shorten the 8' spacing and improve how broad band the antenna. 73

this antenna is best for Skip, and locals that are on flat side antennas. it does not do well with local verticals.

What about using a balun or current choke to decouple the unbalanced coax (52 ohms) from the balanced dipole driven element (75 ohms) which remove the problem of radiation from that coax. Additionally the vswr shown on that meter will not be accurate if the coax is not decoupled from the driven element with a current choke. Then you should transform the 50/75 ohms impedance mismatch for efficient power transfer. Since it is a mono band antenna a gamma match is simple and easy to make and will fix all these problems.

Builder told that his antenna at feedpoint is 50 Ohms, so no impedance mismatch. I agree about a current balun though. de YL3GU

the addition of the reflector lowers the feed point to around 50 ohms! 75 ohms is only when well away from objects! a choke is a good idea but not needed. the 50 vs 75 ohm is not a problem in the old days you would use 75 ohm rg 11 or rg8 intrchangably as you could get 50 or 75 ohm swr tester and the output of radios wear tunable from 25-150 ohms! the loss from a 1.5 to 1 swr is not detctabel in radio land! the old radio books do a good job of explaning swr etc not the new ones! read one from pre 1940 it will explane it at enginring level yet make it clear for lay men!

I've still got a silver rod on the roof of a 18 story building here in London. Height really is might. I'll be taking it down soon coz it's getting bent and battered up there (they don't make them like they used to) I'll be putting up a 4ft shorter fibre glass antenna. The sigma 2011 skip master 5/8 wave.. the silver rod is still a great cheap antenna which served me very well. I tell you what the silver rod ain't scared of the antron 99. If the antron fancies a knuckle up the silver rod is ready to go. Just say the time and the place and the silver rod will be there 🌚 it just sees the antron as a skinny puny bit of wire. Anyway Queensbury rules🌚?

@@MowerJunkie Let's do it again. We have a nightly round table on 38. Right now I'm using a 125ft wire doublet fed with 600Ω open wire ladder line horizontally stretched out east the west. I'm working on getting my old full wave box quad back up for 11 meters. It's a all fiberglass antenna with no metal except for the mast plate and the end caps for the spreaders. This is 22 Chuck's old design. No gamma match just only 1/4 wave stub fed with a piece of 75 ohm cable. 73! 497 Brandon

the reflector does not need to be isolated, it can be attached directly to the boom.

the element is made out of multiple lengths of pipe that slide into each other, so you just loosen a clamp, and make the element longer or shorter to adjust the SWR.
