Among other things, It covers a very cool way to aim at a kiss shot. It’s something I discovered and have had great success with. Two thumbs up for this video! When I resumed league play post-pandemic, I noticed the same clockwise rotation in my draw shots. I thought the trick was to hit slightly off center, which as you noted in your experience worked immediately. However, it's a patch to a bigger problem. I practiced at home using the Buddy Hall tube and I noticed the tip in my final stroke was constantly veering a bit to the left, which was causing the rotation on the cue ball. I was giving my shots unintentional back-hand english. The main culprit was my grip! My grip was too tight. I fixed my grip and started using a closed bridge for shots that required more stroke. My performance on the table drastically improved and it taught me a valuable lesson - do NOT underestimate the value of fundamentals. Also, whatever parallax issues we have, the center can always be found by starting at the bottom of the cue ball (CB) where it touches the felt and seeing if the vertical axis (from the bottom of CB) is aligned with the line of aim. If hitting too high/low is an issue, then I recommend using the Buddy Hall tube. A cheaper solution is to simply cut out a 2 1/4" cardboard and cut out the exact middle. Find a way to stand it up straight on a table and that's the center. Keep stroking through it and you will train your body to physically identify the center when you're down on a shot.
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you mrknight, I totally agree with all you’ve said. It’s so important to burn in solid fundamentals so they become second nature. Not having to think about your mechanics but rather feel the shot and execute is key. Seeing the center of the cue ball is also very important and most definitely ties in. Thanks again for your input Sir!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Many years ago I played all the time and managed a couple of pool halls even one of the best in the country for action. I was never a great player, but I was decent. When I payed for my 1st lesson, I was taught to start by hitting the center diamond on the long rail with just the CB and try to have it come back and hit the tip of your cue. Once you can do that, then move to the short rail and just progess further and further away. I think this device can save you lots of time and probably is worth every penny, but the other way works to. Just my 2 cents. Nice video, I'm just getting back into the game.

Thanks Randall, the cue ball can teach us so much. Note: If you don’t have a cue ball with dots, use a stripped ball then orient the stripe vertically then shoot straight in stop shots, you will then be able to compensate until the ball no longer spins. As for The Third Eye, this tool/aid can immediately show how far off your perceived center truly is as mentioned in this video. Personally, my aim point is 3/32” off my perceived center to actually hit true center of the cue ball.

Ron this is an excellent explanation in how to improve your pool playing. I also use a cat whisker spot tie around the shaft cut so that it touches the cloth exactly 1 inch and an 1/8th from my shaft center. With the Third Eye and the cat whisker (very close to the cloth) positioned properly you know exactly where the cue ball center is. If your eyes don't perceive that as center ball you got work to do. Maybe some glasses or a new prescription are in order. Astigmatism exists in almost everyone's eyes. Years ago I used a 16 oz Pepsi bottle contraption to find center ball to get accurate bridge positioning for hitting center ball.
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thank you John. It is important to be able to accurately hit center ball no doubt. Today, I no longer have any issue. Finding my vision center helped a lot. If I’m off with my chin position, I will be off with my perceived center I’ve found. Vertically, I’ve never had an issue there. Interesting about the cat whisker thing, I’ve not heard of this. Thanks again John 👍🏻

@@ronthepoolstudent In all my years of shooting I've had a bigger problem with center ball vertically mainly because I tend to use a lot of draw English. That's a bad habit to get into because of stop shots. Like Ray Martin who I learned so much from I shoot a lot of nip follow and nip draw shots. More than half the time in runs you only need to move the cue ball a few inches.
@ronthepoolstudent

@@johnskulavik7116 it’s nice if we can limit cue ball travel John. That’s what I try to do when I practice straight Pool. All stop shots if at all possible. When Tony Robles visited me, we played probably 20 hours of straight Pool (his favorite game) We shot on a nine foot Gold Crown as well as on my 8’ Olhausen. I learned a lot from him. His message was to limit cue ball travel as much as you can. Look for patterns that present mostly stop shots.

I can agree 100%. So many of the things we "think" we are doing --- Aren't what we're doing at all!!!! In all honesty --- Larger Tables will show our shortcomings; they're less forgiving. Being honest with yourself on practice -- to truly find and correct misconceptions of YOURSELF! At times, it's a hard pill to swallow if you really want to improve. It takes time and want. Appreciate what you've put out here; it IS the basis of improvement!

Thanks you Rod, great points. The larger table scenario you mention is spot on. Last week for instance, I played on a 9’ Diamond w/4 3/8” pockets. This was a real eye opener. I ran three drills that I perform on my 8’ and man…what a difference. I’ve been considering joining a league as I’ve mentioned in a couple of my videos. I now think it’s best to play on a 9’ league rather than a 7k’. Also, I would recommend to anyone really serious about taking their pool game far to opt for a tight pocket 9’ with tournament cloth and Accu-fast or equivalent cushions. Thanks…👍🏻

@@ronthepoolstudent "The larger table scenario you mention is spot on." .... ask me how I know!?! :) (or what I've realized). I've recently gotten back into the game after better than 20yrs away from it; used to play a lot on small tables, considered myself pretty decent on a good day. Now I get to "enjoy" playing with my son for the last couple months and also joining the league he's on. 9ft Diamond tables, pockets are tight - have really challenged my ability (I didn't say skill!); humbling I say. Self improvement/skill/ability, in my opinion, needs at least a 9' table. Large tables require precision, you learn/gain that --- your "game" will hugely improve on smaller tables (it's much easier to see!). ---------- LOL, the 7K comment, I knew and fully understand. My mind and fingers don't cooperate with one another either most of the time. Sometimes I see things that don't look familiar at all.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/mITIpKB-dryLl6s You’re correct Bob. The third eye however really helps with your real time stroke when you use bottom and top spin as you leave the tool on the stick. The third eye is an alignment tool that assists in lining up on center and gives real-time feed back during the shot. I thought it was a gimmick until I bought it. It’s the best stroke aid I’ve ever used. Btw, I picked up the stripped ball shot you mentioned through Tor Lowery as well. He’s a great instructor and his skid shot on the striped ball is another way to get feed back just like observing if you have any side spin when drawing the cue ball. I'm going to order a 3rd eye but, one method I learned over 30 years ago for finding the center, is to start with the cue tip where the cue ball meets the table. Then go straight up from there to whatever spot I want to hit. Even after you find center, hitting dead center is difficult. No matter how hard we try we are human beings and not as accurate as machines. But I think someone can benefit from training with the 3rd eye.

I am lined up with my dominant right eye position Dexter and have evolved now into touching my chin to my cue (or very close) when addressing a shot. There is a term for this incorrect perceived cue ball center and it’s called .parallax shift”. I have used the third eye to test my head position and how it effects perceived center but it doesn’t seem to help. This being said, I really believe it’s a vision difference from eye to eye. It would be interesting to know how someone with same vision in both might perceive true center. Thanks for the comment and your kind words too Dexter. 😊

Best way to find center is when you're behind the shot take your tip all the way down to where the cue ball touches the felt on your shot line. That's center. Then come straight up to where you want to hit. Watch a lot of your top pros. They aim with draw then come up

This is a technique I’ve noticed also Jason and have tried it. I haven’t worked enough with it as my coach has me focused on precise tip placement while addressing the shot rather than redirecting from table surface to strike point during the stroke. I’m thinking the pros have done it for so long it’s now second nature to them. They can still deliver the cue tip to the desired point on the ball to achieve that perfect spin without even thinking about it. Thanks for that observation and advice man. 👍🏻😊

If you have to move your tip to get to the middle of the cue ball, do you need to adjust your aim or do you just keep your cue parallel to the shot line?

If you’re trying to hit center cue ball Don, you’ll need to have your cue on the shot line.

Not here to burst anyone's bubble put the cue ball on the spot hit the second Diamond at the far end make the cue ball come back and hit your tip it makes you have to be in alignment when you can do this 18 or 20 times you should be good to go turn your ex drill into a stop shot drill if you don't make the ball stop correctly it will swerve one side two or the other if it is completely straight it will stop dead playing in a league will help you get your nerves under control playing by yourself is great but once you get the plane competition your nerves will give you away play and have fun

When I plAy 25 years ago with my muuchee lol I had soft tip and a different length back stoke with pAuse so I could always have zip what's the difference for you on tips.i was just about a 5 ball runner on average but done many more runs playing 8 ball. Hard or soft what should I do lol

Hi Alan, thanks for your question. I’m heading to my league this morning so once I get back I will put together a video on cue sticks and tip selection. I have some pretty good advice that I’m sure will help. I should have it posted by late this afternoon.

Has your perception changed over time that you do not compensate now? I find it very hard to see true center when brdging on the rail at an angle not seeing all of the cue ball.

Since my Lasik, what I see is not always correct. I’m not sure, but I think this is the culprit. It’s hard to be certain as I never have worked this precise at my game and the last time I played prior to 155 days ago was 1990. I’m learning all sorts of crazy things about my game now.

@@CueballcontrolSometimes yes there is and thank goodness for that CB. I was only an average shot maker player back in 1971. Once my eye sight went bad, (bifocals) I pretty much gave up pool in 1990 as I said. Now that I can see once again, I’m working hard to become the best player I can be.
