Bro, this is a crazy! I can't thank you enough! After nearly 20 years of not playing pool which was my only hobby and my level 20 years back as a very casual player was very good as per our standard and understanding of pool. Recently I started playing pool with passion but I found that to enjoy playing pool with the current standard I need to work hard to improve my performance as the level of the players nowadays is scary even within the casual players. I watched dozen of videos on KZbin and I must say I learnt something from each video and I'm very thankful to the channel owners for the effort they put to share their experience in pool in public to help people to improve their perofrmance in pool. I bought a very good CF shaft and started playing with passion, changed the cue tip 4 times in very short period, however I found myself cannot improve anything, and it looks I even forgot how to lay down on the table (which is somehow true) as I feel like I am laying on the table blindly and missing very easy shots. I was sure that I can do better or at least to have same performance I have 20 years ago, but there was something is missing but I wasn't aware about it. Honestly speaking, I watched this video before but not paying enough attention to the contents. Today I watched this video again with high attention and I stopped the video several times to take screen shot of each shot. Bro, I went to the pool club without a plan to apply what I saw in your video but your impact is beyond my plan, when I reach the pool club I remember everything I saw in this video and applied it on the table. I found big improvement in my stroke in term of feeling when I hit the CB, accuracy of my shots as I was able to pocket the ball much better than before and also I noticed that my speed control is better. I must admit that this video caused a massive impact on my performance especially these moments 03:24 + 08:37 Again and again and forever, thank you so much for your effort in sharing this valuable contents with others and sorry for my long comment 🙏🏻

It’s rare that you see pool instructional videos recognize that this game isn’t one size fits all. Most of them don’t touch on variable techniques and this is refreshing, as it directly tackles this and mentions how everyone does it differently, but helpful to have certain elements. Great vid Niels.

I've always advocated for players to play how they are comfy as long as you deliver the cue straight... I tried changing up everything to be a by the books player and it really hurt my game as soon as I started to play how I felt comfy again my game went thru the roof
@TheJurgisRud3 жыл бұрын
@@shanemccarthy7282 I agree with you Shane, but I also try to be open minded to changing things for the sake of improvement. That being said, I do things that the book would say is wrong. I don't have a "pendulum stroke" for example, because it takes all the feel out of my shots. I'd say I have an Earl Strickland type of stroke, in terms of mechanics anyway. I grip the cue tighter than most as well. I've also made some stroke changes recently while adjusting to a new Cuetec Cynergy that were beneficial. But you're right, there are things that I do "wrong" that are unique and necessary for my personal stroke.

This was very helpful. I only watched one of Niels' videos before this. In that video, with the cue ball and object ball on both spots, he was pocketing the object ball and getting the cue ball back behind the center line 10 times in a row. Well, when I went out to the Pool Table Shed to try it myself, I could not do it even ONCE. So I just figured Niels' videos were too advanced for me. But this is what I'm working on right now and I think this video will be helpful to me when I go try these ideas for myself. It's very impressive to be able to get a lesson from such a top-level pro! Many teachers are better teachers than players, which is okay, but not the case here. UPDATE: I tried this, and it really helped! I discovered I had been using sort of a weak "Stroke 3" for all my shots--meaning I was stroking too long for short shots but not strongly enough for long shots. Thanks Niels!
@johnnyp62023 жыл бұрын
Once again a video just filled with common sense. I took a lesson with a SPF teacher and the concept just never made any sense to me. The stroke is dependent on the shot. It is what Jay Sawnson told me many years ago and great to hear it confirmed by another elite player.

Did have a question. You compared the height of a snooker table to that of a pool table. You said you flex your knees slightly more on a pool table because it is lower. Do you think there is an ideal height for a pool player, and if so what is it? Too short and you have trouble reaching shots, too tall and you need to fold up like a pretzel. Any thoughts on this?

The thing that has really helped me recently is moving the cue more "slowly and deliberately" THROUGH the cue ball. I realized I was "striking" or "hitting" the cue ball with the cue and that was adversely affecting the straightness of my stroke. On short and medium shots you can actually move the cue quite slowly and achieve a good accurate hit. As I watch Neils, he is actually moving the cue smoothly THROUGH the cue ball even on hard shots. When I got this into my mind and stopped "hitting" at the cue ball, my accuracy immediately went way up. Now I work on grooving it. I work on my stroke every day; I have to, or otherwise, it starts to break down. I grooved a very bad stroke when I was younger, and it's still "in there" and ready to come out if I get tired, lazy, or careless.

Niels - THANK YOU! I’ve been putting the learnings from this lesson into practice for 3 weeks, and it has made a step change improvement in my game! I’ve played on and off for over 40 years and I never realized until this video that I had the same backswing for nearly every shot, and I just varied the stroke speed, with pretty much the same follow through. I somehow learned that way and repeated it thousands of times so it was burned into muscle memory. 3 weeks of using the stroke tips in this video have given me a clearly better, smoother, more natural and accurate stroke. Next, I’ll move on to the accuracy drills in your next video to really hone that element. Your teaching style is fantastic and going back to the basics is working wonders for me - thanks again Niels! Mike.

The best part is feeling yourself get better over a few back to back sessions. Like from the beginning of the week to the end. Its 99 percent practice at the end of the day Id say. Tough game, but fun as hell.

While these stroke techniques are super valuable, I’d like to share what I, additionally, have learned from this video. “How to be a pro” versus “A good player”. Hearing Niels “think” and seeing how he breaks down, what seems to be a very simple action into many different parts and motions. All able to be manipulated to produce different or more effective results explains two things. 1) Why pool is so challenging and 2) how to take your game to the next level. Niels is showing us that there are subtleties to the game that make the difference between a 60 degree cut angle and a 30 degree cut angle. Or... a 6 foot shot and a 3 foot shot (sorry Niels... meters) :) Another great video... and keep on grinding on CLP!!!

Great advice Niels. Getting more out of the cue without having to hit it harder is really an essential skill. A larger stroke gives that action while still keeping the cue under control.

@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen I’ve been focusing on your drills and the mental aspect for the game and have made significant strides. My weakness is the power draw so your drill on improving your stroke is one of my favorites in mastering this stroke. I mentioned you in one of my KZbin videos recommending your drill. Thanks for all the great training drills Niels! 😊

Niels Thank You for such great content. I have not witnessed any pool content that breaks down stroke and speed/length this way. Just by having watched this I've already seen significant improvements in how I approach my pre shot routine back stroke and have gained a lot more consistency and better cue ball control. Before I was thinking too much and often using too long of a length on my back stroke( maybe I've watched too much Chris Melling ). I've also noticed that this also helps me to be less "punchy" with the cue ball because now I'm adjusting for the proper type of stroke length per the type of shot. Could you speak more about the Spin to Speed ratio on your stroke in one of your videos? Tyler Styer mentions it in an interview as something Johan put a lot of importance on needing to maximize english/draw etc on big tables.

Thank you! Can you explain the last bit a little more with the spin speed?
