Mark, I love this idea, and your list is as fascinating as I expected-deeply historical, delightfully highbrow, and unapologetically elite in the best way. I’m particularly intrigued by The Secret History of the Mongols and your choice of The Accomplished Cook-historical cookbooks always feel like a portal to another time. Also, I would absolutely watch that episode! Now I’m mentally assembling my own ‘best of the shelf’ collection

Thank you! Your choice of words delights me. As to Mongols... they were a lot for sure, but very important for so many people. And you are so correct - cook books are portals! If you do a best shelf I for one would be keen to see what you choose!

Thanks for doing the vid! Great choices, and for picking Samuel Johnson, my deepest confibularities 😊

Fabulous choices for your best shelf, Mark. I think it would take me a while to decide what to have on mine. There are so many wonderful authors to choose from. Something fun to ponder upon, though. 😃

Thanks. Admittedly non-mainstream; and a large part of me chose them due to that!

I think you chose well. It's tricky to only pick ten. I must say though, I was surprised you didn't pick Shakespeare's works. I was convinced they would be on your list. 😊

@@zoenorman9846 They would ordinarily. But, as they are so well known the shadowy side of me chose otherwise. They'd be on the next shelf along... lol.

Thank you, kind sir! Interesting...yes. Elitist? Er, yes? Lol.

@ I didn’t think it was elitist . Eclectic yes, elitist no. Books are books I think.

I think I would also choose Johnson's Dictionary (alongside the multi-volume Oxford edition & Australia's Macquarie Dictionary & Thesaurus). You can't live without a gem (or two) of dictionaries. Thanks for another stimulating video.

I wholeheartedly agree - to the point that I much prefer to read a dictionary than anything else! I think that has much to do with my inability to focus for long periods on reading... dyslexia and all.
