This drawing looks absolutely amazing! I always struggel with the shadows, so my drawing gets a bit too dark (as you said it doesn't match the original skin tone anymore). I also like both of these kind of videos, oil and colored pencil tutorials, so just keep doing what you like. Thanks for sharing all your experiences with us!!

This is the first time I've seen this video though it has been up for quite a while now. I've been drawing with graphite for many years now because for me gray tones are what I am good at. Just recently I've had this desire to use colors. Especially color pencils. This tutorial is quite insightful as well as entertaining. The day before I watched a different video in which the person demonstrated the opposite of your technique. Both in the end results are remarkable in their own way. I plan to try many different techniques and compare the different approaches using similar/same images. Thanks for posting this video. It has been quite helpful.

I never thought about making highlights without the bright contrast. I like it better! It makes people look more real. Photos can trick us up, not only in color but also in values.

I really love your oil painting tutorials, but this drawing tutorial is so fantastic! It has opened a whole new world for me, as I had no idea you could achieve results like this. I am trying to gain the skills to recreate a beautiful photo of my granddaughter and her mother. I may eventually achieve this in oils, but will definitely attempt to create it in colored pencils first. I’m looking forward to any tutorials you create, painting or drawing!

I work a lot with coloured pencils, usually Caren d'ache luminance but I do have the polychromos too, your tips here have answered a very frustrating problem, blending polychromos! I have tried and tried to use the chromos like my wax based pencils and ended up with very poor results. I blow the dust off my chromos and try this method today. Thanks for the demo.
@SergeyGusevArtist6 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Obrien thank you too, they are not wax based, so we have to work in layers from light to dark ones, they are not supposed to blend, but you should try some more, I am sure you will succeed.😉

I was very happy to see you drawing in color pencils, I do like the Polychromes, Luminances, Pablo's & old Prismacolors. Although this portrait didn't come as your regular ultra real look that you do according to my humble opinion. I have not seen if you have done any other after this, I hope so because I beleive that you can do wonderful ultra realistic portraits, same as you do with oil & acrylics. I admire many of the ones you have done. Best luck!

Thanks for this great video. I have polychromos coming in the mail and I didn’t realize just how different the blending techniques would be compared to my wax-based luminance and prismas. I think you’ve done a great job here!! You achieved a very beautiful and realistic drawing! One of the issues I face while drawing with colored pencil polychromos is when I’ m layering colors and then start pressing on the paper sometimes I do lose the color and tone I was willing for and I am unable to fix it because the surface is burnished at that time.

Heya! Awesome tutorial, thanks for sharing your knowledge! No matter what mediums we're using, if we have the foundation we will achieve what we plan to plus other important aspects such as inspiration and concentration. Now, I have a little advice, if you'd like to consider, regarding your tutorial. Very skilfully rendered yet, in my opinion, whilst you have an excellent likeness, the drawing doesn't seem to me to be quite at the same angle as the reference photograph. A tracing to overlay would show if this were so or not. In my opinion, this doesn't matter since the likeness is there, and the tutorial is very helpful. Perhaps different types of pencils: watercolour, pastel, as well as more polychrome would be great. I've read the use of mineral spirits to blend and it would be helpful to see this done. Also, the grisaille tutorial being taken to completion in oils. These suggestions are in response to your video.

Doesnt prismacolor look smoother as compared to Polychromos. I am having a real hard time blending in the polychromos. They just wont blend :). Going to draw the 3rd portrait. Was planning a mixture of prisma and poly, but i think i ll go with full poly and see how it turns out

my best tip, other than layering, is to TAKE YOUR TIME! just cuz you see someone draw AND colour something phenomenal in a speed drawing that's 10-25 minutes long, doesn't mean it took them that long. For me, when i first started out many years ago, i swore i had to have been stupid cuz it took me HOURS to finish a realistic looking piece. Only to realize a couple years after thinking this way, i finally realized the pieces i seen everybody else making in these speed drawings took them HOURS to make. slow and steady wins the race people

Hi Sergey, nice tutorial, thumbs up from me.I love to work with FC Polychromos, although there are so many more nice products out there which I sometimes take as an addition to my drawings it's probably the German quality you get when going with FC. Comparing them with some other American, British and French pencils they seem to be generally harder and less colour intensive, but as you said in your video, you don't want to work quick and easy with coloured pencils, but in layers, many layers. If you have a look on instagram @tomgrizzlyfinearts I posted a couple of snapshots of childrens portraits done in polychromos as well as other stuff. Generally speaking I think one can achieve outstanding results with these pencils, but one needs to be careful and very patient and without the basic understanding of how layers work, especially when it comes to achieving "blends", one can quickly mess up things beyond repair and needs to start over again. But no master ever was born being a master, right?
