Freshman year at the University, we met at our 5th floor dormitory, living in different "suites". Our first floor common room has an upright piano and Tony knew how to play it. We both loved Joni James + knew the words to all of her hit songs. But the first song he played was "Heart + Soul" We sang it the same as the recording. Then he taught me to play the melody line while he played the left hand chords. We had different majors; his Journalism + mine Chemistry. So the only class we might have had in common would have been Freshman English, but because of all the other different courses, our English class schedule was not at the same time. We both sang in the church choir for one semester, but he was a higher Baritone and I lower. But the Choir only sang 4 parts + he couldn't reach the lower Bass notes that I learned to reach. We became best friends by the 4th week of 1st semester and music was our deepest bond... With our family homes 300 miles apart, we talked about a Summer time visit, with Me driving the miles for a weekend. Because of a misunderstanding caused by a kid jealous of our friendship, who lied about things I never said, Tony called me into his room one day in early May and confronted me with the accusations. I was crushed by it. I said, " Why would I ever say anything like that? How could you believe I could?" And without thinking, tears in my eyes, I blurted out, "Don't you know how much I love you?" With both of us sitting on his bed, I laid my head in his lap + he gently patted my head ... .
