As far as I am concerned I find the series quite intriguing. We can have a glimpse into their lives: not only traditions or customs, but also characters and habits. One has to admit that the general splendor of these wedding is very impressive. I cannot help myself from asking one question: Where to they get such considerable amount of money from? From my point of view this show could have been a great opportunity to eliminate serious cultural prejudices, but instead it does just the opposite.

Hilarious when she complains about discrimination, the owners of a joint can serve who they like and not serve those that they don't want. It's called freedom of choice. Thelma is such a lovely, kind, motherly person with loads of patience and composure, despite the tight schedule.Gypsy brides are almost angelic compared to those bridezillas from US shows.And their culture is truly unique.Some of it's heritage could be exemplary to others, like strong moral values and tight family bonds, but there are a few upsetting issues as well, including analphabetism and strictness of gender roles.

While Gypsies are usually of Romani origin, most Travellers are English or Irish. What they have in common is their nomadic lifystyle. Travellers are proud of their own culture and traditions, such as “big fat gypsy weddings.” They are famous for the distinct fashion of young Traveller girls with fake tan, short skirts and belly tops.

I didn't mean it as discrimination towards working class. I was raised in a working class family myself and I noticed my parents always spent money the moment they got it and I saw it with other working class families. My bf also came from such a family but his parents were smart and now live a great retirement, while mine still live paycheck to paycheck. I just tend to notice it's much easier to follow that cycle if you are of the working class.

@here_we_go_again25714 жыл бұрын
They're Irish Travellers; the traveling people who are native to Ireland. (i.e. ethnic Irish -- Descended from the ancient Celts & Vikings with a bit of Norman blood.) Normans were people descended from the mailand Celts (i.e. Gauls in modern France) and Vikings who settled there. The Normans conquered Britain in 1066 AD/CE and the eastern part of Ireland a few years after that. Nowadays both native Irish as well as native English travellers live in the UK, USA. Ireland, since the 1970's has tried to persuade its native traveling people to settle down. Some of them did well, others preferred to continiue traveling.

On the other hand, I agree with jacobs5, maybe that is how this part of their culture looks like: sparkling, dazzling, tawdry.. funny. However, Thelma's patience and her work are really impressive. One thing is clear, we should never judge people by their looks and this video was created to present only part of the Gypsy life. It is entertaining and that's all.

where do they get the money for these fucking weddings
@whatthereview3698 жыл бұрын
+ashley lancaster -- The men generally do "scab work", meaning they get paid in cash, off the books, and the jobs are arranged by word of mouth. They usually work construction, landscaping, car and home repair, or selling goods / trade. Those occupations make good money. A lot of the time, its also tax-free, since they usually are paid in cash. Plus, if they are getting free housing from the government, or living in a camper, you can eliminate the high cost of rent, which gives them a lot of extra cash. And perhaps the biggest one-- many of their young men will work, work, work for a few years and save ALL their money up. They won't be spending the money on a house, or college. So they spend it mostly on really nice cars, or a biiiiig wedding. Sometimes its the girl's father who pays for it. Sometimes its the groom.
@whatthereview3698 жыл бұрын
+melissavalentine569 They are different from the rest of society, in that most of their money goes toward cars, weddings, and personal luxuries, instead of rent, or education-- which are only such big costs because we (Gorgas / non-Travelers) insist on spending 90% of our hard-earned money on simply having a place to live, or an education so we can PAY for that home.

I’m wondering why Thelma doesn’t purchase a plot of land and create a venue for her brides- I know she has a lot going on but I feel like she is so trusted by the travelers and they work well with her - she’s a great business lady it seems like that would have been a great additional business to try rather than ‘training seamstresses’ or she could have done both with help. Thelma Madine is an amazing dressmaker, who not only takes care for a dress but also organizes the whole wedding for the Gypsy girl within few weeks. For most people it would be unachievable. Unlike Gypsies, usually people spend months on planning and organizing weddings. Having watched this movie I disbelieved how shallow people’s needs can be; having a unique, royal dress... How could they afford such a dress while living in a caravan? Thelma's ability to work with Gypsies is admirable.

The show is full of contradictions.There are Gypsies living in a caravan but wealthy enough to spend thousands of pounds on a wedding. There is the fake-tanned, bleach-haired bride looking for a posh wedding. Thelma herself, who is a great businesswoman, is presented as an overworked dressmaker. The showmakers forgot she makes a fortune in her very own company. They show the very universal truth-every girl wants to be a princess this one special day. Even though if its far beyond good taste.

Travellers are subjected to discrimination within the majority population.Because of the negative and misrepresentative portrayal,it wasn’t surprising that it was difficult to find a venue for Mary’s wedding party.Generally,the exaggeration of the wedding dress,clothes and party is seen by me as something weird.It looks like a scene from a fairy tale.For sure, this show won’t help to create a better portrayal of travellers.By the way, I’m really wondering where do they get the money for that???

On the contrary to MsRybcia89`s I think that looking for racial prejudice is naive. How many hard-working, educated Gypsies do you know? They don`t do anything to change how they are portrayed. The presented gypsy wedding, as all weddings in this culture, is rather flamboyant and garish. We see how the Traveller families try to create the most lavish wedding possible with no expense spared. Honestly, it is nothing but a case of form over content for me. It seems that during the whole ceremony there was no room for the newlyweds' feeling as it was crammed with the bride's elaborate glitterball dress. I feel pity for the groom, as he looked like a poor second to all the glittering rest.
