Thank you as always for your excellent analysis, and exposing short falls. You have re-enforced my decision that my Mavic 2 Pro is absolutely the best drone for MY uses. I do a lot of low light flights, and absolutely love the way it does cine smooth videos. Plus the range - even though the Smart Controller has less range than the standard controller, it has never been a problem with me getting the footage I needed to get. I really don't need a drone to follow me around. Great job in all your testing of the Skydio2.

Boy did you nail the points! I don't even have a Skydio 2 or a DJI and you nailed the exact issues I figured I'd have with the drone. I do things at range, so naturally I want obstacle avoidance and autonomy at range and still see the image on my screen. Nothing like BLOS but at least what the ANAFI can do. I have always wondered if that incredibly strong battery magnet might interfere with the radio waves? I mean everything I ever knew about magnetic fields told me that magnets and electronics and electro magnetic waves don't mix. There is a reason why nearly all other drones have a purtruding antenna arm. I get why they went with the Parrot controller but they really should have made sure the range would hold up for atleast a mile or so with no issues I have noticed the gimbal jerking as well in other videos! Anyone should be concerned with that whether you are a cinematographer or a novice KZbinr. You got to have smooth movements. And that RAW to JPG thing needs correcting! And twilight flying! It really won't fly at all? I was wondering about low light capabilities and apparently it won't even take off! Isn't that sort of like DJI where it won't let you fly unless you connect the drone to the internet every so often? It's perfectly legal professionally and hobby to fly in twilight (30 min before sunrise and 30 min after sunset). I did hear that the sensor bubble might be adjustable in a "Pro Kit" by that is only available as a subscription service from what I understand. Yes you will have to subscribe to a yearly charge for that and many more features. I had my skepticism with the Skydio 2, not because I didn't have faith in the team but because I felt they focused so much on the autonomy and AI they didn't have time to work on the things that are expected in a drone. Sadly I'll have to wait on my Skydio 2, and hope they can fix these issues.... but the range.... I'm not sure they can....

I have been watching your videos for some while now, a really great channel, thank you for your work. I have the Mavic 2 Pro which I really love. Image quality is a primary reason for me when I buy a drone, obstacle avoidance is a bonus. I have watched quite a few videos with Skydio 2 and been imagining videos I could do with that amazing autonomous tracking and getting to know more this drone through videos like yours really helps a lot. I will be keeping my eyes on Skydio 2 but meanwhile, I will keep hold of the Mavic 2 Pro. Something tells me DJI is not sleeping, and they are about to blow us away very soon with a new drone that matches (or surpasses) Skydio 2 autonomous capabilities. One thing I know for sure. DJI has come a long away to just give up their throne. But anyway, no doubts we will see tons of improvements on Skydio and a lot of issues you mentioned will be fixed pretty soon. Competition as really great for us consumers.

I’m not going to get mine until the day 3rd batch and maybe the two important things that are dealbreakers for me will be fixed 1) the limited light fly ability as my morning starts at 5:30 so as to get that shot as well as the dusk shot 2) the telemetry- what were they (not) thinking? Oh and I almost forgot 3) the jerky fumble. That might work for cops looking for a bad guy, but not my client selling a 14.2 million dollar home and property. Thanks again your the best!!!!!!!

Thanks again Ken for updating us on the controller issue. I will be one of those guys who will mainly be using the controller. My hand is not quite ready to hit the cancel button, but let's see what gets fixed. Spending close to $1400 is lots of bucks to spend if there are some issues. Maybe by the time batch 3 ships some of the issues will be fixed. I believe that one of the comments below is a fact " The controller definitely seems to be an afterthought on Skydio's part".

Adventure crowd would also want long flight times as well as compact design, this does neither of that, the new Evo 2 has foldable arms as well as at least 30 min flight times and is promising advanced tracking.

Ken, Your candid and honest comments are much appreciated. I remember early on in the Skydio 2 process how you commented that you weren’t hyped about this drone simply because it is American made but that it needed to be a quality product. I am not a DJI fanboy but the tech that they put in their drones is top notch. I was hoping to see at least the same in the Skydio 2. I am disappointed at what I am seeing thus far, especially in regards to the controller. I am in batch 3 and seriously considering canceling my order.

Good video - not what I wanted to hear, but excellent info. Having owned the Parrot Anafi, I knew the controller would be a weak link. Surprised when Skydio announced they were using it. I would usually get about 2,500 feet , maybe 3,000 feet before video feed would be unusable with the Anafi. Skydio should have designed their own, outsourced or licensed the Autel Evo Controller with the built in OLED screen. My other concern was the app and its lack of features. Major update needed on that. My Skydio is coming in two days - decision time is at hand - keep, sell or return? Thanks Ken for the video.

Good feedback. Does disabling the height floor help with getting the drone out of the occasional jam? Don’t have the drone but this is discussed in user guide starting on page 16 (at least in version I downloaded from Skydio web site)....

It's about time. I have seen a good number of videos about this drone. This Skydio 2 drone seems to be a one-trick pony drone in the sense that it is solely good at one thing, AUTONOMY. No telemetry data....WTF. The difference between this drone and the Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom is night and day. The Mavics are on a way different level far as doing many different things. It's a joke to compare the Skydio 2 drone to one of those drones.The way I see it, this Skydio 2 drone will only appeal to one group of individuals. It's time for reality to set in now.

You’re spot on. I’ve preordered one and supposedly I’m in the first batch but I haven’t heard anything yet. The more I watch and read about this drone the more I’m disliking it. I have an Anafi and have always hated the controller so that in itself was a minus for me. I have the Mavic 2 Zoom and it’s definitely hard to beat and I love it. Another drone that I think might give this one a run for its money will be the Autel Evo 2. I also have the Autel Evo and it’s one I find myself grabbing for a quick flight and I’ve always liked it a lot. From what I read the Evo 2 will be coming out soon and according to patent registrations they’ve made it’s going to have more sensors plus larger ones so this might be one to watch. It just might be a great all around drone.

The Anafi remote I operate is constantly glitching out.Range before lost signal is continuously fluctuating in the same location. I found a lasagna pan (foil) adds a more robust signal.These wifi remotes REALLY suck.

Hey man, I so appreciate your videos. This is exactly what I need! I am a real estate photographer and a realtor and I I'm just getting started in doing videography. I have an a6000 and a sigma 16 mm lens with a Zhiyun Weeble lab gimball and I have a skydio2 on order. I've been very concerned about the video quality and now that I see that it has that jerky motion, that is absolutely unacceptable. I'm going to cancel it. May I ask, what would you suggest then would be the Drone that I should get as a beginner? I would really kind of like to have a mavic Pro 2 but I hear there are a lot of problems with the geofencing Etc and the autel Evo doesn't have that issue. Which one do you think I should get? Your skydio VDO are refreshing. It was all about tracking, and for the last 3 months, nobody posted anything about flying the drone 'normally' with an RC. Now that you start to do that, at least the flaws are exposed. Tracking is probably amazing, but if you want to travel, you need to fly it with RC, and no telemetry seems unbelievable. Maybe they should build their own RC instead of adapting the Anafi RC.

First of all THANK YOU for this great review, you saved me some money! Regarding the controller, I never had a Parrot device that worked out of the box or kept on working for more than a year, and I will never buy something from that brand again. I really don’t understand the management’s decision to use this controller for the Skydio 2. Looking at your video and other reviews it seems the Skydio 2 is (very) good in one thing, obstacle avoidance. In most of the reviews I saw I also noticed jittery video footage, especially in footage that has high contrast or fine detail like tree leaves. Also I think with the new EU regulations this drone will be too autonomous, when following a mountain bike or skateboard it is hard to prove that you always have LOS and are in control of this drone. Put this drone together in a box with a Mavic Pro and wait for the babies!

Basically, this isn't a drone for the typical DJI crowd. It's a product that does one thing really well -- following its owner with zero worries of a crash -- and I think that's pretty awesome! Yeah, don't buy it for cinematic landscape shots! But the DJI drones are already great for that anyway! I think the remote control is an afterthought because they truly didn't intend for anyone to manually pilot this drone very often!

Lon , besides there being so many orders that caught them by surprise, I think they were wanting to get this out ASAP and rather than build their own transmission system and their own controller they were just wanting to have a controller available to sell with it. When they announced they would use the Anafi's controller I was disappointed. I still wouldn't be surprised if they don't come out with the Skydio 3 with a new controller. These problems are why I never buy a completely new complex product like the Skydio 2 until it has been out for a while and a lot of the bugs all worked out. I don't want to be a retail beta tester! I own a couple of parrot products, and the skydio isn't really what i'm looking for in a drone, but you're addressing concerns the skydio2 audience shouldn't even have in the first place. There's a reason why the skydio2 doesn't even come with a controller when you buy it. The autonomous capabilities are the entire point of the drone. It's a self guided autonomous selfie cam. If you want to use a controller with it, then you're clearly not the target audience, and tbh I think they just threw it in there to satisfy those who have the drone and want some slightly better way to controller it for fun, and nothing serious.

I haven’t been impressed with all the jerky non-cinematic track-me footage. Granted, there have been some awesome demonstrations of obstacle avoidance, but following myself around can get old quick. I was really hoping to be able to control it through areas I can’t today with my Mavic, similar to the Under the Canopy Skydio 2 video, but if it’s going to be constantly cutting out that really really sucks. Wonder how they got such good footage with the Under the Canopy video without losing the signal... Z

You're obviously is having interference that I suspect are causing the connectivity and video feed issues. What would have been telling is to ditch the watch and the phone and perform the same test with another device. Depending on the WiFi environment any receiving device has to take the time to look at any packets in the ether and decode/decide if they are meant for that device, that takes CPU cycles. I've seen similar issues with other wifi technologies, you must consider that the controller/phone needs a constant stream, unlike a laptop or other device that requests data and then buffers said data as it arrives providing what appears to be an uninterrupted stream to the user when in fact it's parsing the end server constantly and receiving it's incoming stream in chunks, in between that it's decoding the addressing on any other packets it detects. With the drone using WiFI control plus video streaming in real time it's dependant on constant uninterrupted connectivity. Another topology would likely handle this situation better but unfortunately that's not an option here.

The remote is an issue..and doesn’t seem to match the drone. I really hope SKydio can come up with their own controller. They just don’t match!

It is a shame they used a comparitively low-tech basic controller with a cutting-edge drone, but I guess all the time and money went into the drone and they had to fish around for a quick economic controller solution. Hopefully some of these minor issues, such as lack of telemetry info, will get ironed out in software updates, but unlikely they can improve the control/vision link with the Parrot-based hardware.
