I'm curious which characters from A Song of Ice and Fire, you'd say are following typical fantasy tropes. One thing that draws myself and others is that the ASOIF series doesn't follow any typical tropes. GRRM specifically states how the big bag is "just the leader of the other side", and most characters are grey, not black, or white, or strictly good or evil.

100% agreed. Mistborn is my least favorite cosmere series. For me, it is because I really liked the final empire, but the subsequent books (era 1) just got worse as it progressed to me. I almost DNF’d Hero of Ages, I gust about a third of the way in and jumped to stormlight to see if I just didn’t like him as an author. Found out it was just mistborn I didn’t like. I did go back and re-read the era and had the exact same feelings, but I suffered through to the end. And from a lot of people I see who liked, era 1, they say it’s much better than era 2 so I haven’t felt a need to pick up era 2 just yet.

Looking back I’ve always been drawn to fantasy, but since finding you and the other world hoppers I feel like I’ve developed a more complex understanding of the genre. The one thing I used to think about fantasy in general that makes me cringe a bit now: “ fantasy is all the same-it’s stagnant.” Ouch-- i hate to even type that in your comments section, lest I invite the wrath of the channel. I had a very basic idea of fantasy in general -the kind of basic idea that outsiders to the genre often have-because I hadn’t given myself a chance to see the nuances yet. I can assure you I’m over that now . I still have so much more to read ( because each of these books is like 600-800 pages, and I’m not the fastest reader out there) but I do feel like I’m “educating” myself on the nuances of the genre, and my appreciation for it is maturing. Your channel is a big part of that, so thank you-you’re making me a better book nerd, and by extension a better writer, and I deeply appreciate that .

Things I said in the past that I regret: -GRRM writes too much -I'm never gonna read Malazan. It's just not my style -Song of Achilles? Nah, probably just hype -Discworld is too silly for me

Martin's subversions are eerily similar to Tad Williams' method in Memory Sorrow Thorn.

Yeah the first part of Berserk(Blackswordsman Arc) which you reviewed is actually in the future. Once you get to the Golden Age which is considered to be the best arc of Berserk it actually puts the first part into context. Golden Age is basically the backstory for the Guts you are reading in the first volume. Golden Age has some of the best character development and exploration of themes I've every read in any medium. It will make you understand why he is such an edgelord in the first volume. Was excited to see you picked it up tho.

Daniel, I was like you for many years, had a passion for the Wheel of Time like nothing else, read through it like 3 or 4 times consecutively because i couldn't let go of it, have the audiobooks as well. Moved on to Brandon Sanderson cosmere stuff and couldn't stop reading it as well. Then i came across a series called Cradle from Will Wight, and I think it may be my new favourite book series, I found it so good I read it like 4 times consecutively, really great series, and would love to hear your take on that series as well.

Cool vid. It's nice to see people constantly re-evaluating their content, and what goes into it. Looking forward to new videos (as always). A potentially interesting video would be reviewing your older videos, and giving your take now. Like when you get through portions of Berserk (keeping in mind that if Manga in that style isn't your thing, that's cool) and do a re-review. As I'm sure you know, your reactions to books change as you age, learn more, etc. Could be cool.

Kind of surprised this and the forsaken, darkest timeline review aren't on the Berserk playlist. Glad to have been here over the years to see the full journey. Also really glad the '97 anime pretty much glosses over Black Swordsman review in one episode. Speaking of the '97 anime, it introduced the world to Guts' Theme which is fantastic. :D

Worst opinion I've ever had: When I was a teenager I thought the sword of truth series was better than the wheel of time. So much shame.

I enjoyed Sword of Truth as well, never thought better than Wheel of Time though.

I enjoyed Sword of Truth when I was young, too. We didn't know any better. Terry killed his own series for me with his big, fat mouth. I DNF WoT a long time ago. I just couldn't get past Mat and Queen Tylin. Everyone seems to love it, though, so maybe I should give it another go.....

The first video I ever saw of yours was the Anomander vs Geralt one, and I was like "Geralt gets his ass beat by Vilgefortz, how the hell is he beating Rake?"

Unfair to compare a character who appears in very few scenes of 3 books with a character who has 8 something books that focus mostly on him.

Hussain T I mean you can still compare them but regardless Anomander outclasses Vilge and Geralt

Please consider reading The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson. Wonderfully dark, beautifully written and feeling like an ancient Norse tale while it actually came out the same year as The Fellowship of the Ring. A true forgotten classic.

Good move to reevaluate the way you approach reviewing manga! I haven't read Berserk personally but as longtime manga reader I am so curious to see how you approach your second go at reviewing the story as someone still fairly new to the medium. There are so MANY good stories to be found in manga that easily rival what you find in novels BUT it is still a bit of a different beast so I imagine there might be some level of adjusment needed when reading and review sequential lit if you're more accustom to consuming purely written lit (nevermind lit sequential or otherwise that non-western in origin). Regardless of how much you like Berserk in the end or not I do hope it's encourage you to explore the medium a bit more and maybe on occassion if you come accross something you really like make a video!

Gotta say I'm super excited to see you review Berserk again, its one of my favorite stories of all time not just in manga. But I also understand its not for everyone. I think you will really like it up until the end of the Golden Age arc though Lost Children is still one of my personal favorite storylines.

So glad you're going to keep reading Berserk! I kinda felt the same as Daniel after the first volume of the manga, but now I'm finishing up the Guardians of Desire arc and I'm definitely hooked. Can't wait to get to the Golden Age arc, everyone keeps saying it's amazing. I believe the hype.
