Disney's Percy Jackson reached its season conclusion this past week and I thoroughly enjoyed what we got. However, no show is perfect. I want to explain one of my biggest nitpicks with Disney's Percy Jackson.
Hope you enjoy!

I noticed this immediately too. Took away a sense of wonder and engagement when they just told you what was happening every time. Did a similar thing with Luke at the end but at least we got to kinda see Percy figure it out in real time. Still took away from the "surprise" and betrayal. Many minor issues with the season but enjoyed it overall. Kinda hope they get a better showrunner for the future stuff

Isn't Rick Riordan himself the one of the showrunners and the main screen writer?
@dethdaemon

@@arnewengertsmann9111 Yep, and that's the issue, he just put together a string of scenes to tick off boxes from the books, sure it's accurate, but it's now boring

@@arnewengertsmann9111 He's almost certainly in more of an executive producer role than an actual showrunner. Someone else is translating it to the screen and he's simply saying yes or no to casting and story beats. I'm not sure he's looked at every piece of dialogue ten times and okayed it like the main showrunner would

I feel like they could have cut out some plot points like Crusty and have more time to flesh out the other scenes. They already did that with some things but there still seemed to be a lack of time to really get the audience immersed in the scenes (8 episodes isn't a lot so I understand). I did enjoy the show but as you said, it also bothered me that they knew so many things instantly and did more tell than show. I'm still excited to see what they do with the other books though!

I mean Percy isn't dumb in the books. He's super observant and we usually see that in his mind. We can't really do that in a show so he is speaking up more. Percy also has been given a more thorough grounding in Greek mythology which is way more appropriate than what we got in the books. Sally knew he would live that life one day, why wouldn't she make sure he understood his family history? Honestly I felt the only reason he didn't know things about Greek mythology was for Annabeth to explain things to him. This combined with his already crazy observation skills makes him a little more ready for this life change. However we still get moments where his inner Seaweed Brain shows itself.

Personally, I'm absolutely sick of the Da Vinci graded look. In this video we can see clearly where some shots in the new show are too dark, too low contrast, and don't look good on your average screen, especially compared to the older movies, where the grading was pushed into higher contrast and higher saturation so the images always pop. It's literally because everything is edited and graded in Da Vinci. It looks great in that program but it doesn't translate to all screens

I don't think it's the fault of the program. I used both DaVinci and Premiere for grading, they are just tools. It's just the popular look now. Plus no grade is ever going to to translate to all screens. Most movies and films are graded with industry standard calibrated monitors so it will look the same on those monitors. The issues is that most TV-manufacturers are nowhere near those standards and prefer to run their own game. So the industry has settled with designing their grades for standard calibrated ones for the most consistency. (Ironically I noticed Iphone screens looking more consistent than TVs). Another fault I've heared is that many modern movies are initially graded for HDR-screens and then when they have to convert it to SDR they do a slapdash job. Phase 2-3 Marvel movies suffered from this. It's only what I've heared though, never worked on those kind of productions.

with Annabeth I can forgive it (it also makes the Medusa encounter more realistic. Of course theyd realize its medusa, its pretty obvious), but there's a reason Percy's main expression in the books (which Walker Scobell nails) is confusion.

I think it makes sense tho. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena, of course she’s gonna be smart and able to figure things out. I do agree I liked the movie’s Lotus casino scene more. As a massive fan of the book series, I think this was a great adaptation with some minor flaws that come easily be fixed in season 2. People get mad when changes are made that help improve the story but I think the changes were good. Idk why people expected the show and books to be word for word.

Me and my friend discussed this while watching it. She may be the daughter of Athena, but she's also 12, with little experience of monsters except for the giants when she was a child. She shouldn't come to these conclusions because she doesn't have the experience to know what to look out for. In this season, she should be a bit naive. Season 2, suspicious of everything, and season 3 she has enough experience to start piecing things together much faster. That's how it should have gone, with Grover and Percy probably making their own insights, that while they don't hit the mark, start coming close. Until like season 4 or 5, you know? And the more 'hidden' a monster, the harder it should be. Hence why lotus casino felt like such a large stretch, because Las Vegas could reasonably have that as a casino name, and you're probably not going to connect a flower with a Greek myth in bloody Vegas.

@@china68014 Yeah, I understand what your saying and can see where your coming from. Her being a daughter of athena does make her smart but maybe the show made her a slightly smarter than she should’ve been. It just didn’t bug me as much as it bugged other people.

I liked the show. But I feel like the show felt one note. And the direction felt flat to me. I don’t know what the budget was but I can for sure feel the Disney cuts to production.

They had 12-15 million per episode, they had plenty enough they just mis spent it or someone was pocketing it. There was not a lot of CGI, apart from always having Grovers legs (which in the books he wore trousers anyway so cool addition but not sure if it was necessary to always CGI his legs.) Game of thrones had 6 million per episode in the early seasons and close to 15 million towards the end and they managed 1 hour episodes and not just 30 minutes. Also the actors were definitely paid more for game of thrones than this show. The book of boba fett was also 15 million an episode longer episodes al lot of CGI so I really have no clue what they were doing with their budget for this series.

We now understand that more creative control is not good, compare fantastic beasts vs Harry Potter, original trilogy vs prequel trilogy, and now show vs movie. Rick is a hack when it comes to adaptations.
@whycom

I just found it disappointing more than anything. Rick Riordan was all proud in interviews how the show will be book faithful and then some "Creative freedom" turned into something close to the book but still far away. At least the films were funny and I enjoyed them as a separate film and did not connect them with the book.

I personally thought it was pretty good, though yeah I felt it was going by a bit too fast and the fights weren't great so far. They're also pretty different to the book characters it's hard to believe they're the same at all. But i'm hopeful for season 2 to fix some of the issues and be even better.
