My son Jeremy is bilingual in both Korean and English. Each year we travel to Korea together, and he attends school in Korea while we’re there. I try to give him as much exposure to Korean, and as many chances to use it and speak it as possible. This time you can watch us visit Gyeongbok Palace (경복궁) and rent Hanbok together. We only spoke in Korean during our visit there. (This video is not sponsored).

I am also half korean on my mom’s side and half white American on my dad’s side. You actually look a lot like my dad Billy! My family moved to Korea when I was age five to seven, and I never fully learned the language. My dad never cared about engaging in Korean culture, even when we lived there. We always spoke english and watched American media and rarely took on Korean traditions. The attitude was always that America was better than Korea. It is truly amazing (and honestly very emotional) for me to watch you with your son embracing his culture, even if you didn’t come from it Billy. As someone who is mixed, I feel like this attitude from my dad would have made me feel so much more accepted growing up in both America and Korea. I actually showed this to my mom and said “I wish Appa was more like this growing up. I wish I could have memories of running around in Hanboks with Appa and trying to learn Hanja together!” Now that I am older I doing everything I can to reconnect with my amazing mom’s heritage. Throughout the process I have found such peace with my identity as well, as it feels like so many aspects of my personality and values align with Korean culture. Thank you so much for sharing such a sweet day with your family and being such an awesome Korean language teacher!

Do you mean that you moved from Korea at age 5-7? Cause if you moved to Korea then it shouldn't have been a problem to learn Korean, even if you only spoke English at home.

Also, I may be wrong because I'm still elementary, but I'm reading the Hangul subtitles and listening to Jeremy....sounds a little like Busan dialect he's learning. Am I wrong here!
