I have seen many photos over the years of the Bird of Paradise flower, and have thought I should get one sometime. However, I didn't realise the foliage was so fantastic. Even with no flower it is a really attractive houseplant!

Yeah the leaves are great, they look so tropical, I've been enjoying its leaves over the last few years so the flower are just a nice bonus. Also they are very tough leaves and don't seem to get easily damaged so they have always looked great for me.

Thank you for the videos and the update, as I am buying a BP over the weekend and needed to know how to care for it before purchasing. According to your videos, they seem fairly easy to care for. I am confident the plant will thrive in my care.❤

Yes they are fairly easy to grow, although they don't grow very quickly and you will need to wait several years for it to flower, but at least its leaves look nice whilst your waiting for its first flowers. They don't like wet roots, so allow the top of the compost to dry out in-between waterings, they like plenty of water over summer, but in winter I only give them a small amount about once a week. They are very tolerant of different temperatures, they grow faster in tropical conditions, but they can tolerant temperatures close to freezing. Good light levels are key to good growth, although they will tolerate low light levels, they grow fastest in high light levels and will usually only flower with lots of light. Ideally they should have a few hours a day of direct sunshine, but avoid midday sun over the hottest summer months.

Beautiful. I hope the heavy rain and wind didn't damage it today.

Thanks, it was worth the wait for the flowers, hopefully I'll have some more flower spikes next summer.

I have 3 bird of paradise in a large pot I bought them separately at a garden centre for 94 cents each. Bargain! I kept it on my back deck all summer and brought them indoors in Setember. I bought indoor grow lights and kept it happy all winter long. Now they are close to 3 and 4ft tall! I *think* I might have a flower stalk 🤞🏽I was going to separate and repot them into their own large pots but I think they like where they are for now.

Wow that's very cheap, if they are in a big pot they should be ok, they tend to flower sooner if they are a bit pot bound.

I was told if you buy from a shop they can take several years to flower. However, if you can cut a piece off someone else's, they will flower earlier. It worked for me.

Yes that might be true, mine was from a shop and it's taken almost 4 years to flower.

I just found my first large flower spike on my 5yr BP!! Just indoors and done nothing special. Soo, it will still take months for it to bloom? 😅 I’ll be happily patient.

Bambo update?
@Gardeningat58N

I'll probably make a bamboo update in autumn once they have reached thier full size for this season. So far they are only just waking up so there is not much to see, up this far north they don't really do much until June. The moso has loads of shoots, although not much thicker than last year, the fargesia are upsizing well, the borinda is only just leafing back up, the spectabilis is only just starting to shoot and the chusquea is recovering after I divided it. I'll probably upload a chusquea video later this summer.

Nice! Why is my bird of paradise so much bigger but still doesn't flower? (yet)
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 ай бұрын
It could be for a few reasons, they flower sooner if they are pot bound, they need plenty of sunshine to flower well and ideally feed them with a tomato feed. Also they flower most in spring so if the temperature is the same year round they may not flower as well.
