Happy Belated Birthday Bill! Sounds like you got a lot of great books. Several interesting Lincoln related books. Never heard of that particular book on Lincoln and religion. Sounds interesting. I've read the book about the Almanac Trial and enjoyed it. I recently viewed again the movie Young Mr. Lincoln directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda which features a fictionalized version of that trial but set much earlier in Lincoln's career (before he was married) than the real try. Despite the fictional elements I still think it's a great film.

Thanks for the birthday wishes Ricky! I really appreciate it. Hope all is well with you. I found some great Lincoln books lately. I finished the Almanac Trial last week and enjoyed it. I have also watched the John Ford film and I really liked it. Have you seen the one with Sam Waterson playing Lincoln? I think it is from the '80s? I own it and I enjoyed it as well. But my favorite is probably the one with Daniel Day Lewis. I thought he did an excellent job. I am currently reading David Herbert Donald's biography on Lincoln and when I finish I am going to watch it again. I love it. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

I have got pretty much all of Antony Beevor's books and that is one of his best. It is not just about D-day but the entire Normandy campaign, which some overlook after June 6th but saw some of the most brutal fighting of the war. Happy birthday Bill.
@billruttenberg2 ай бұрын
Thanks James. Yes, that was one of the huge differences between his book and Stephen Ambrose's book. Ambrose didn't cover the rest of the campaign. I enjoyed reading it. One of the better books I have read this year. What Beavor title should I go after next? What would you recommend? Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Happy Birthday Bill! It looks like you have some great reading ahead of you. I've read several books by Erik Larson and enjoyed them.
@billruttenberg2 ай бұрын
Thanks Laverne! Yeah, the family picked some good ones for me this year. I am very happy with the choices. I have read the Larson book on the Lusitania and I loved it. I am looking forward to this one on the Civil War. My friend Patrice Jones has been raving about it and keeps getting on me to get it started. Do you have a favorite Larson book? Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Thank you! It was a great day with my family. Yes, I am still a kid at heart and I love my HotWheels. The Royals had a great run, especially when you compare it to last year's finish. I am very proud of my team. Losing to the Yankees still stings though. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Neely is a great writer on Lincoln. The Fate of Liberty is a really insightful book. I also have Neely's The Last Best Hope of Earth: Abraham Lincoln and the Promise of America, a brief biography of Lincoln that was originally a tie-in to an exhibit on Lincoln. I think it is a really good brief introduction. Also have his Abraham Lincoln Encyclopedia which is an excellent reference work though it needs to be updated updated. Just today I checked out The Demon of Unrest from my local public library. I had it on hold for about 3 months as other patrons had been reading it. Look forward to it and will try to get my own copy of it if I like it well enough. I have never read anything by Erik Larson but a couple of his other books sound interesting to me. Have you read anything by him? There is an interview with him about his new book in the most recent issue of The Civil War Monitor that I thought was interesting. However, there was a review of it by a Civil War historian (I forget his name) that was on The Civil War Monitor digital newsletter a couple of months back that was rather negative. Basically, the reviewer thought that Larson didn't really say anything new. So I will be interested to read it myself. Do you get their digital newsletter? You can get it free if you subscribe to the magazine. I have heard about the Chorus of the Union book. Sounds interesting. I would really like to go to the Jackson Street Booksellers but it's a long way to Omaha for me. Last time I was in that city was when I went as a a member of the Northwest Missouri State debate team to a debate tournament at Creighton University and that's been a long time ago! I have purchased a few books from Jackson Street by mail after contacting them through their website, but they have a much bigger selection than is listed on it. I was able to buy from them nice hardback copies of Lord Charnwood's biography of Lincoln and of the Lincoln -Douglas debates edited by Harold Holzer.

Hey Ricky! Yeah, Jackson Street Booksellers is a HUGE store with tons of selections. I love being able to go there every once in a while. The Lord Charnwood biography was a great pick up. I need to read that one. I do get the newsletter for the Civil War Monitor. I don't do a good job of reading through it though. I have read the Last Best Hope of Earth and I enjoyed it. He is a good author. I have been making more of an effort to start reading more of my Lincoln stuff. I have been looking at my book accumulation lately and I have realized that I need to read more of them instead of just collecting them. Hopefully I can get through more of my shelf of Lincoln books. So far, so good. I have read the Erik Larson book on the Sinking of the Lusitania. I thought it was excellent. I want to say I read another book of his but I am blanking on what the book was. I will have to check and see. I have collected several of his titles this last year. I need to dig in. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

@@billruttenberg Hello! I am an archeologist with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. All of our current projects are centered around bridge replacement surveys and other safety improvements. However, I recently discovered remnants of a mid 20th century site during a survey for a MDOT faclaity we were doing. included a inatct bottle, and other items like nails, bricks, ceramic fragments. Regardless, got to fill out a site card and name the site.

@@calebwelch6393 That's pretty cool. I didn't even know that the Department of Transportation hired archaeologists. Guess that makes sense if you are moving around that much dirt all the time. Learn something new every day! Thanks for sharing.

Been a fan of Beevor since I finished reading WW2 complete history last year. It was a long read that almost took me 6 months of reading and re-reading.I have couple of questions actually. 1. Is that the book D-Day a military history or just simple narrative history? 2. How to get or buy that archeological magazine online? Belated Happy Birthday. Keep reading and be happy.
@billruttenberg2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the birthday wishes. This was my first Antony Beavor book, but it won't be my last. His name is on my radar now when i go book shopping. The book on D-Day was, I felt, a bit of a combo. It had the element of a military history but read very smoothly like a narrative history. It wasn't dry at all and had a lot of accounts of different soldiers included in it. It wasn't just a simple narrative history. I am not sure if I am making sense but, hopefully this helps. I think that you can go online to their site, just google the magazine, and you can get a subscription to it. It isn't expensive compared to other magazines. They are always putting out special offers so that it is very affordable. Thank you for watching. Have a great week.
