Congratulations on your anniversary. You might like "The Dawn's Early Light: The War of 1812 and the Battle That Inspired Francis Scott Key to Write The Star-Spangled Banner" by Walter Lord. I've enjoyed his books on the Titanic and Pearl Harbor.

As a Canadian may I recommend Pierre Burton’s two books on the war: The Invasion of Canada and Flames Across the Border. They have been released in a single volume Pierre Burton’s War of 1812. Burton was the first historian I read and I think he holds up pretty well. Congrats on 5 years!

I would recomment "Autumn of the Black Snake" by William Hogeland, it is before the War of 1812 but it describes how the US created a Standing during the Northwest Indian Wars. Also for Navy I would recommend "A Signal Victory: The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813" by David Skaggs.

I haven't read any of these, but these are all books about the war that are on my list. 1812 by David Nevin, The War of 1812 A Forgotten Conflict by Donald Hickey, Union 1812 by A. J. Langguth, The Civil War of 1812 by Alan Taylor.

Congrats on Year 5! I read a good biography of Madison a while back. I had to check my kindle to see who it was by. It was James Madison by Richard Brookhiser. I have read the Hornblower series by C S Forester, which mostly aren’t set during the war of 1812. I think Commodore Hornblower is but he is in the Baltic trying to help the Russians fight Napoleon. However Forester did write a book called The Age of Fighting Sail all about the sea battles of the War of 1812 which I have been meaning to read. So thanks for reminding me!

The book about silas talbot might be worth a read. He was an American military officer and slave trader. He served in the Continental Army and Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, and is most famous for commanding USS Constitution from 1799 to 1801

A lot of classic sci fi or "hard" sci-fi does use the sci-fi as a vehicle for exploring important abstract topics to humanity in a more realistic context. Asmiov for example writes a lot about society or sociological elements. The Time Machine is a great example of this -- where it is at its core a sci-fi story...but the real meat of the story is the everything else that it gives you. But it also doesn't take away from the exploring the science concept. Overall it reads like a sci-fi with gothic elements honestly. If you enjoyed this try exploring more sci-fi short stories or something like I, Robot. I don't think this was a critique of industrialization though. Not saying you're wrong just didn't get that at all from it to be honest. I thought the jump forward was sort of a "life goes on" kind of situation of re-contextualizing things, like the human drama is a blip. I feel like this is reflected by the descriptions of the landscape (sun and moon specifically) or the contrast of the Time Traveler's drama in the context of the dinner party. Also themes of how we're super subjected to nature, the core of humanity being a product of nature and therefore subject to the forces (like time) that effect all animals.

Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, my kids enjoyed that one, and it's not far from you. You can go to Springfield first and then to Chicago. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs looks interesting. Yay, June on the Range. I think I watched this video twice, first time was while walking on the treadmill, so I needed to watch it twice.😂 China Mirage by James Bradley best non-fiction for 2024.

Read What You Own. So I've gotta know: Will you be making exceptions for bookish birthday gifts? i wouldn't want to be an enabler. 😉 Edit: Whoops, nevermind, you answered this at the end. 1989, eh? For some reason, I remember that as the year of finding any excuse to say the name "Manuel Noriega" and laugh. Yeah, I was a weird kid. And that state of affairs has probably changed far less than I hope. Looks like a nice assortment of stuff. And I like the textbook! I think Peter Ackroyd has a whole History of England series doesn't he? Dig the Marie Curie biography. But anyhow, thanks for the video, and have a good one!

Stewart O"Nan is a wonderful writer. I read one about Hollywood in the 50's and can't remember the name, but it had "Sunset" in it. The prose is just beautiful. I wanted to mention that the Moe Berg book was made into a documentary and was on Netflix. What a story!

FYI, there are two books by that same name. The one is just a fictionalized version and the other one is the authentic story of what happened and it was very sad, but it was very good, talking about the history of weather reporting when it was just in its infancy back then and making references to “the long winter”, one of Laura Ingalls Wilder books📚

Ooh! I have Obsessive Genius. Prometheus and I studied Marie Curie when he was younger. I added the Colonial Children book to my goodreads. Students would probably be very surprised at the responsibilities children had, not to mention the trauma they might have experienced during that time period. It wasn't a peaceful time. I'm currently buddyreading My Dearest Friend, letters of Abigail and John Adams and there's a warning and a reminder John gave to Abigail that are eye opening. Happy reading~
