In this video I give my blunt and up-front opinion on the future of graphic design. After almost 18 years of experience in this industry, I have seen a lot of change over the years. But I think there are far bigger changes coming for the world of graphic design, and they likely will be here sooner than. a lot of people think.
With the ever-increasing approach of artificial intelligence within the design world, we are seeing a shift in the way designers conduct themselves in workflows, with clients, and their final design solutions. But what does the future really hold for us, graphic designers? It's going to be an interesting future that's for sure..
If you found todays video on the future of graphic design enjoyable or useful, let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace ✌️

In all honesty i have been a designer for over 20yrs and in that i have transitioned from hand design to computer to (now) AI assisted designs. I keep having to refresh my thinking in terms of psychology and basic trends, the whole social networking thing helps narrow much of what i do but still its like the tide its relevant today and then not tomorrow, while making sure i ignore the noise. AI will find a place but cannot replace human thought anytime soon as it is like the Ouroboros that uses what it has been given to make new while we (as humans) try and deviate and explore even more to come up with original ideas. In short as artists we learn to adapt because nothing in life ever stays in one place or the same.

Unfortunately, I don't think that that's how it works. See, we think the standards will remain at the same level. As AI generated art and design becomes more common place, lower quality work will become the norm via ubiquity. And while we think that that is fine because we can produce work at a higher quality, the public's appreciation of quality will also diminish. There are examples everywhere where technology diminishes our abilities and craftmanship for those old enough to recognize them. Music lovers know this well. Eventually those of us with skills will be pushed aside over time. Some will last longer than others. Like stone masons, at some point paying them to do their work became cost prohibitive. Now it is a hyperspecialized field. So, it will be with art and design.

I am a graphic designer but in the last 8 years i am doing a lot of video editing / motion and illustration. Cartoons, whiteboard animations etc all made by hand. What i can say.. i start to use A.I to speed up some things, like using some pre made effects, adding furniture in a 3d photo (just imagine doing this by hand) and to make some compositions using A.I + photoshop. I am loving the results but my concern is that as i live in brazil, people here always want the more cheap methods. Today i have a good job where i can do many things, so i do not cost that much for my boss. But in the future? I do not know...

Tbh my only concern is clients / agencies that try to cut corners and think that since AI can 'do my job' then they don't need to pay me as much, or just skip the designer all together. This comes from paying hourly wages, which now means if something takes me 1 hour instead of 5 hours then I get 5 times less money for the same job. I personally think hourly payments need to go, but some clients have hard time underdstanding that.
@SatoriGraphics
@SatoriGraphics 9 ай бұрын
This is where the divide will occur in the better more efficient designers getting the higher paying jobs, and the lower tier designers losing to Ai. The brands who want to cut corners will often be the ones who do not understand the value of say for example, a brand identity that is well thought out and crafted through the eyes of psychology and a target audience.

@@SatoriGraphics Thank you for the reply. How do you get to the point of being a better designer though, if you can't be a lower tier designer anymore? Nobody's born with 15 years of experience. Also a lot of European markets are much smaller, and you kinda have to work with clients who want to save money, and in my experience even huge namebrand representatives in certain European countries would prefer cheap over well-thought out. My overview might be one-sided, of course, because I have only worked for big agencies so far and have not tried freelancing - maybe otherwise I would have had a different experience.

11 years this year as a graphic designer and I love how things have been made simpler over just a decade. In 2010 we had Adobe Flash and now Animate and now I can finally use Adobe products like Fresco on an iPad to create 2D animations and a comic book and comic strips. I am adapting to the changes and loving it because it was a dream to be where I am now a decade ago. I'm looking forward to what's coming next. I am grateful to be part of this important career and it's challenges. It's a blessing as well that I can still use my hands for traditional craft and design. To many more years in GD.🍻

The biggest difference between AI and other technological advancements in the past, is that AI is a self learning and self doing tool. It’s designed to do what people do and do it better. It won’t just be graphic design that gets effected by it. Every thinking job on the planet will be effected at an exponential rate. Studying people and demographics will be automatic, as well as generating targeted personal ads and imagery for any user. Typography will be bunched into more specific caregorues and similar to how ai generation gives 4 image options to select from… that’s pretty much the extent of what people will be doing. Even the motion graphics and commercial market is effected already (though that’s the farthest behind). Ai is designed to get exponentially better at an astronomical rate, and now that the public has its hands on it, it’ll be everywhere. Though I do think there will still be an audience who is sick of ai and supports classic human design, tho it will be smaller and more related to artistic statement and personal brand, than related to business promotion and advertising. I give it 10 years max before 90% of design jobs in most companies are gone.

The way people who were left behind in the 40s and 50s as mentioned in the video is quite different from the change that is happening right now. Back then people who didn't adapt to digital forms of art might look like they were left behind but eventually, they got back in with the boom of social media where they regained their popularity for still being the same. Manual artists (like sculptors for instance here) might look like they were left behind but with the help of social media they have regained their audience by still being manual artists, but that is not the case here with AI. I see a future for experienced designers and not for beginners or people who are just starting out. I see so many job openings asking for 2 or 3 years of experience for entry-level jobs and because of this the opportunity would make sense only for the experienced person over a beginner and it would keep revolving around them. And yeah now you may tell me to upskill myself but that doesn't work that way for a person with a lot of responsibilities on top of his/ her head. Even if a person would try and upskill themself it would still be too late to get in for a decent pay. This is exactly what I tell so many people AI might be a friend to the experienced person but it is purely a villain for everyone who is just starting out.

Art and design are different things. Ai is a new technology that is revolutionising the design workflow both in terms of efficiency and time. It's a tool that will only become more and more useful with time. Those who cannot see that and who do not accept it, will simply lose out on jobs more and more as time passes by. It's akin to somebody rowing a boat down a river and then someone else using a motorboat. The latter is faster, easier to do and more efficient. There will always be people who are against new technology for whatever reason; the luddites spring to mind.

It may be useful and convenient now for established designers and digital artists but the problem, or concern lies to how long will an experienced artist remain relevant? Midjourney makes strides with every iteration where the work generated is approaching "good enough". Why us creatives look at intricacies and detail/ photographers pixel peeping their work, the average person or client doesn't care about all that and "good enough" is okay for them. Why employ or out source work to an artist, agency etc if it can be done fast and cheap in-house or at home. People can learn and produce prompts all by themselves with no design background, they have all the resources online to learn and produce works that look good at a glance for little investment/a subscription. No need for a designer, when a computer is now smart enough to become a generator and not an aid. Imo this time it's different than just being left behind or learning to adapt.

@@Sh4un1r1k I understand where you are coming from, I entertained that argument for awhile. Though I completely disagree now, look around at what most people are making with AI... mostly utter garbage, or just plain meaningless. However, I've seen some of the *coolest art ever* created with AI too... but EVERY time I've looked deeper into the person behind really well done and creative AI creations, I've found that the human being was already a creative before AI came around. Sure, some random hypothetical people *could* learn to make "good enough" designs... but those of us who are "real designers" will always deliver a FAR superior outcome than "dude with AI." My longtime clients know I'm using AI to assist in my design work, and they have been blown away by my work lately. They are fairly young and in a creative field themselves. They are brilliant, and I'm sure they could come up with "good enough" designs with AI... yet they continue to pay me because of the results I deliver. Remember, AI can't actually think - it's not sentient, but it is an incredible creative 'partner' and workflow enhancement tool.

@@mattmarket5642 I'm aware this "AI" is just a smart algorithm, similar to that of the Deep Blue a super computer capable of "learning, iterating moves" to beat chess masters. So it's a really powerful tool. Don't get me wrong, I do admire the technology (although I've not used it) and fascinated from results people get out of it. The works generated just from people using prompts via chatgpt, the output is very near (with errors) comparable to digital artwork you'd see on Deviant Art etc from manual or hand drawn works. I know that businesses and their bean counters will abuse it for increase profit and/or savings potential at the expense of lowering wages or workforce. It can be beneficial for a small run/self employed business/freelancer. I will remain skeptical on where this may lead.

A big part of my job is design in magazine layouts and other documents. Imagine when the user just clicks a button, pastes the text and AI creates an entire layout that they can edit and easily manipulate. Not saying that would be anytime soon, but it's almost guaranteed, canva already is nearly there. I enjoy AI and the time it saves me on certain projects but I'm ever so cautious (and starting my personal trainers qualification just in case lol)

Great vid Tom. I honestly see both sides of this, but personally, I think that like other advances in technology, AI is a TOOL, and it's about being able to adapt it to our current workflow. Whether people like it or not, it's not going to go away. I think the most important thing about it all right now is issues and hurdles when it comes to copyright; those are things that need to be adressed. Whether its implementing certain guidelines or restrictions, it needs to be clear what can and cannot be used. It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years honestly. No matter how much it advances, like you said, I don't think Ai can replace the human aspect and art of psychology... At least not anytime soon.

I think you nailed it when you said that low-tier fiverr type designers are going to be hit the hardest. You're right about that. But another class of people that are going to be slapped around by AI are the overcharging mediocre designers. Most of them charge way more than their work demands and for those people, the simple run to an AI to create something equivalent to what they could get from someone who wants $100+ for a comparable design is a no-brainer. Those people will see their grift go away. Talented designers who understand how to deliver for clients aren't going to have an issue with AI, and if anything, their workflow will accelerate and be more productive. I have found my design work has flourished with the help of AI in some areas. People are worried about a world that doesn't exist; where AI can do automated work without intervention, and while I do think that's coming eventually, there's no reason to think that it's happening soon OR that when it does people will prefer it over working with a human who responds correctly and professionally to their needs.

The reality is - the bread and butter clients that are the backbone of most graphic designers client base, are happy to accept the results of AI generated designs. This results in a general lowering of expectations. This is the real enemy of graphic design, not AI itself. Top tier clients will never risk their brand by using AI to generate their designs, but top tier clients are too few to support the graphic design industry as it stands. As designers we have to change our strategy. AI takes time to master for clients and we all need to offer to do the AI generation for them. AI is only crap when people who accept low standards generate inadequate results.

In my view, AI-generated designs don't match up to those crafted by professionals - probably because AI's creative capacity still lags behind our human ingenuity. However, I'm sure that the future holds great potential for AI to surpass us in both speed and innovation, potentially impacting the graphic design industry profoundly. It's unclear which industries will thrive amid AI's expansion; its versatility seems boundless. We might even revert to a more hands-on approach to work, just like how our work-life as humans first started -that is, unless machines can replace us entirely. Fields like medicine, sales, and manufacturing might withstand the AI shift if machines can't replicate our physical skills. It appears that AI is progressing toward a level of meta-learning, research, and knowledge discovery. This advancement hints at the possibility of AI fostering new scientific insights by conducting experiments and analyzing data independently. Such collaboration between AI and human-driven progress could lead to unprecedented breakthroughs.

I am not afraid of AI and use chatgpt on a daily basis as a brain extension, or a very knowledgeable virtual assistant. I can't help but think we as designer, will be needed to design everything in the meta world, and the ai opens a new world of possibilities. My only frustration is that I am not smart/visionnary enough to envision right now the extent of it, but I know we will have lots of opportunities. Different, but interesting ones, for sure. But I am very adaptable, I am not afraid of change, that may be why.

Great points. The thing about the future is, it's very difficult to predict. Look back at past predictions, most of them are wrong to some extent :P But the technology we are seeing emerging today WILL be a huge part of the design process tomorrow. And not knowing how is fine, we just need to be open minded and adaptable, ready to go with the flow.

Whoever made such a statement was very immature in my opinion and maybe a bit impulsive. What must adapt to new things.

Today: "I cannot believe you're using AI to do your work nore efficiently. That's cheating and not natural!" Neolithic: " I cannot believe you've made a wheel to move more efficiently. That's cheating and not natural" 2.5 million years ago: " i cannot believe you've sharpened that stick to hunt more efficiently. That's cheating and not natural"

Makes you think if one can really call themselves an artist or designer if they don't make use of all the tools they have at their disposal. I don't think tools should ever worry a master crafter

Rip Designers and Artists, welcome new ear of boring generated content. Copy paste stuff based of masters of the past. Yea we got the couple of years before full immersion, but at least it was a fun ride.

Graphic design and advertising are DOOMED. We are just seeing the beginning of what AI is capable of. As it gets more and more powerful and automated it will completely wipe everyone out especially considering the mediocre, boring, copycat content being put out now. Humans don't stand a chance. Sorry but that's the truth.

Oh really? You believe in this metaverse sht? 2 minutes before you talked about psychology. Tbh ... IMHO nobody want to wear such head sets. I would argue that only lonely and sad people would go into a 3D world to meet someone. And this personal thing with this Google glass like glasses ... well I think here are also psychological barriers against a wider adoption of that technology. Not everything you can see in SciFi will be reality at some day (I hope a Star Trek transporter will be real some day in the future). This 3D world crap is out there for years and nobody want that yet. But mostly I agree with you. This neuronal network technology (i don't call it AI) is only a tool for get some work done nobody really like.
