When you've been in the hobby for a while you kind of get used to seeing the same couple titles get mentioned by every reviewer. I've always admired how Jon stays true to his own tastes rather than simply chasing the hotness and gives some love to some underrated and less-talked-about titles. One of my most trusted reviewers in the business tbh

That’s one thing I like about playing games with a group that are all older than me is we get to experience games that maybe have gone out of print or never made it to the US in the first place. As well as some more modern titles
@littleceasar93517 ай бұрын
But a lot of times those games are popular because they’re very good games. Like Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys (if you live in USA) you see a ton of them because they are great cars. I will admit that Terraforming Mars is a textbook version of influencers latching onto an average game making it popular.
@blarneystone387 ай бұрын
@@littleceasar9351 It wasn't my intention to suggest those games were bad; I was more trying to say that many reviewers tend to cater toward the kind of games that make the BGG top 100, which I would broadly classify as 1) mid-to-heavyweight Euros with little player interaction and 2) campaign dungeoncrawlers. The games they cover are great for people who enjoy that style of game. What I appreciate about Jon's collection is that he's clearly very aware of what kind of game he likes and doesn't shy away from it even when it isn't the "norm." He's clearly much more of a social gamer and likes a lot of party games and games that are simpler rules-wise than your typical BGG darling. Like, other than GOT, I'm not sure he has any games here that are more than a 3 on BGG's weight scale. So yeah, not trying to talk badly about games that are popular, more trying to say I appreciate that he highlights different styles than you normally come across!

You've genuinely never been more relatable. This is my new favourite video. Edit: I thought I was done, but now I'm going to get soppy. Genuinely I want to thank you. It seems obscene but you are responsible for my newfound enjoyment of the hobby. The full list of games I got on your recommendation is long, but I'll give it anyway. Chinatown Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers Cascadia Mysterium High Society Parks Patchwork Air Land and Sea (the animals version) Fungi (my favourite game) Vaalbara Qwinto 6 Nimmt Sea salt and paper (I might have to take back what I said about fungi. No wait, I won't. Oh screw it, they're joint first.) All in all, I have more games in my collection on your recommendation than otherwise, and so genuinely, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for opening my eyes to this world. I love this simple (*ding 21) candid video review of your game collection. I feel the same way (frustrated) about the boxes with logos and barcodes and odd shaped boxes. If a 4 to 6 player game can be stored in a standard sized box (ie a box with dimensions of lets say wingspan, great western trail, terraforming mars, meadow, ticket to ride, etc.), put it into a standard size box so that my game display looks clean. I also prefer to storing them vertically. Your video's are fantastic and I really enjoy your videos, the skits and word play and your overall take on games.

Yeah, a teensy bit too dry and sandy for me. I don't mind it occasionally though.

Best team party game for my money is a supply of cheap blank cards to make your own Monikers deck. The boxed game is fine but there’s something magical about having a deck full of in jokes for the people who happen to be there at the time.

Before I become a serious gamer I would always play The Hat Game where you tear up bits of paper and write names on them. I've never thought to create a permanent deck but it sounds fun!

Great video, thanks! Have you ever tried Hadara? It's one of my group's favourites and it seems like one that you'd gel with.

murder on the shelf rename: dead good fun, first degree muddle, cards out (a play on knives out), who played it/who solved it, a study in cardboard. "who solved it" isn't my favourite but might make santorini fit. over all i love your shelf names

I love how you get upset about games not having boxes, logos, names of the same size :D Brilliant :) I am the same, like why if all the bg boxes are let's say squares 29.5cm and then you get BloodRage which is 30.5cm? WHY!? I have a perfect shelf that fits those 29.5 boxes and then can't keep Blood Rage there! I think boardgame designers should really come up with some ISO :)

At least the rage it gives you is thematic! 😁

Thinking of an Agatha Christie shelf name. You could change "And Then There Were None" into something like "And Then There Was Fun." Or there is a book called "Cards on the Table" you could do something with.

I feel like I'm missing a joke, considering you made this comment about 5 minute after the video released...

There's an Agatha Christie book called 'Cards on the Table' which features a murder at a game of Bridge. I'm sure 'Cards on the Table' could be a shelf name.

That would be a great name! Is the book any good?

Give ticket to ride europe back! Brexit means Brexit ;-) .. comedy gold here. Also I LOOOOVE the rant on the box sizes ... as a collector of things myself. I feel your pain. 🙂

try making can't stop the original box or abalone fit on a shelf. its such a nightmare. im trying to put my cardgames in a photobox so they are all the same size, but it hurts to get rid of some of the boxes.

Have you ever played Dungeon Mayhem? Spectacular starter game for any game night. Easy to learn and satisfying to play and swap decks. The expansion is completely worth it to experience different play-styles and add more players to the table with a couple of new & spicy rules.

03:00 such a good point which is way too often overlooked and ignored. My wife is very concerned about the looks of the sides and hates it when every 4 sides of a box are ugly. there are 4 ways to design. at least make them different or chances are my wife puts the whole game away, never to be seen again :D
