If you experience this kind of hypersensitivity to bodily sensations or emotions or have a history of high anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia or health anxiety, then this video on anxiety sensitivity is important for you.
I am going to describe what anxiety sensitivity is and why it is important, how it relates to panic disorder, health anxiety and other anxiety disorders and phobias and how to treat it.
Here is the link for the video on Interoceptive Exposure Therapy:
• Interoceptive Exposure...
What is Anxiety Sensitivity?
Anxiety sensitivity is the fear of internal bodily sensations associated with anxiety and the concern that they are very dangerous and could lead to devastating outcomes. Anxiety symptoms may include a racing heart, arrhythmia, palpitations, chest pressure, skipped beats, difficulty breathing, throat pressure or a lump in the throat, nausea, digestive discomfort, tingling sensations, muscle tension, light headedness or dizziness and dissociation experiences like derealization/depersonalization.
At a basic level…anxiety sensitivity is a fear anxiety or a fear of fear.
Having Anxiety sensitivity puts you at risk for developing an anxiety disorder like panic disorder, agoraphobia, ptsd, somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder or health anxiety. People often interpret the intensity of their sensations as something catastrophic, like they might be having a heart attack, a stroke, maybe they are going insane or crazy or they might fear being socially humiliated or embarrassed or any number of other catastrophic events.
People WITHOUT high anxiety sensitivity accept those sensations as anxiety based and do not become overly attentive to those symptoms. They do not associate those symptoms with danger, fear, embarrassment, or a warning sign that something catastrophic might be occurring.
People with high anxiety sensitivity not only fear those symptoms, but they also begin to react to their symptoms and bodily sensations by doing certain behaviors to prevent or avoid those symptoms.
If this relates to you, you may be avoiding exercise or going certain places where you might feel anxious or panic. You might have safety behaviors like having someone with you, having medication or water or snacks with you, staying within a proximity to a hospital, or you might perform certain rituals or compulsions to calm yourself down. You might breathe a certain way, check your pulse, take your blood pressure, call your doctors, or google symptoms looking for reassurance.
All those reactionary or preventative behaviors only reinforce or strengthen your anxiety and feed the anxiety cycle that causes suffering.

I had a huge skipped beat during a stress test, my cardiologist said it was normal, more importantly he told me "most people wouldn't have even felt it" that has helped a lot, knowing that I just happen to feel these normal sensations more strongly lends comfort

Thank you so much, I feel EVERYTHING in my body and I've always been very sensitive but I started having extreme panic attacks two years ago, they got so bad I started having them about three times a day, for basically no reason, I have a fear of having a heart attack. The after effects of the panic attack is the worst part, depersonalization, strange body sensations and now my panic attacks have almost stopped. I get them sometimes, but I’ve started getting internal trembling or like a rumbling sensation in my leg. It really scares me. I’ve always felt like I can feel pain more intensely than other people and just sensations in general.

I always feel like I’m going crazy, like I see myself from the outside. Lately more so since I’m trying to wean off the Alprazolam. I’m only taking a very low dose 0.25 mg. I don’t want to be on that stuff. When I take it I feel funny in my head too and it scares me. I try to ignore it and do what I need to do. I have Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptom. I live all by myself, no family close. I’m often afraid something horrible is going to happen while I’m alone. All I want is someone to hold me and tell me, I’m going to be okay and I’m safe and I’m not going crazy.

I have bladder kidney cancer I've also had leukemia, I've been fighting disease since I was 15 years old however I am now stuck in this hell's anxiety / trauma rut, for the last 2 years, realistically I've been suffering with severe anxiety for 10 years or more but most recently I overcame anxiety but since my recent rediagnosis of the bladder kidney cancer I've had it out of control and I can't do the things I love, I can't go shopping, I don't have joy in my heart anymore, constantly dizzy feeling like my heart's too slow, too fast, basically every single thing you talked about is what I'm having, I just found your videos and it's like I found a gem in a haystack, I've known about CBT but I've not heard it talked about like you have talked about, even about eating certain foods, I try to avoid because they cause me anxiety, it's so crazy you're describing me to a t, and I thought that there was no hope, the cancer is real but the anxiety is not, and I know that the anxiety is just anxiety and not more symptoms but sometimes I mistake them for more cancer symptoms and it makes me so tired literally and figuratively,

Great video. I often wonder why I ended up with anxiety. I think I was always a bit of a hypochondriac looking back. But in 1979 I saw an elderly woman drop dead in a crowd a few metres from me. She died of a massive heart attack that day. My dad ran through a field to phone an ambulance and when it got there it was slipping and skidding in the wet grass. Two months later I say a 12 year old boy dead on the floor of a room off a small shop. He’s mother was screaming crying. This must of had an effect.

Hi Paige. Is it possible for anxiety sensations to jump around? Palpitations, chest heaviness and shortness of breath were there initially, and I am now used to / no longer afraid of them. However nausea, fear of vomiting, and a lump in my throat have now entered the picture, and nausea especially is difficult to ignore. I've returned from my daily exposures feeling WORSE because the nausea doesn't go away and of course my attention then remains on the nausea. Am I doing anything wrong with my approach? Thank you so much.

It sounds like your brain is taking you on a tour of all of the symptoms caused by anxiety. You treat every symptom the same. You ask your brain to bring them on…and allow the symptoms to stay without judgement. If your brain interprets that you don’t like the symptoms or are fearful of the symptoms, it will hyper fixate on those symptoms and can even make it occur and last longer. Just allow whatever pops up and ask for more. Anxiety is always treated paradoxically.

Are these presented facts somehow related or similar to fear of checking (having) HBP (High Blood Pressure)? It seems whenever thinking of checking BP for no reason or symptoms, feel a prior anxiety and the outcome, of course, is not the one I wanted. This, most likely, could be "translated" to "white coat hypertension", isn't it?
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Жыл бұрын
Yes, health anxiety is reinforced by repetitively checking body symptoms like blood pressure. And yes, it can transfer or translate into white coat syndrome. Thank you for such an important comment that I am sure others can relate to as well.

@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 8 ай бұрын
@@sunshine2049 , yes, that is possible. Meditation can reinforce the anxiety cycle if it is done when experiencing anxiety. It is like you are trying to avoid the experience of feeling anxious. Meditation is better practiced as part of a regular routine versus trying to use it to reduce anxiety. Allowing anxiety sends a message to your brain that you are not afraid of anxiety symptoms themselves, and that helps you to not only tolerate symptoms but reduces anxiety in the long run.

Those eye floaters can be annoying. I think of them as smeared bugs on my windshield. The more I focus on them, the worse they get. Do your best to look paste them. Yes, those stuck songs can be annoying. It happens to me as well. Even though it annoys us, you have to do your best to not let your brain know that you are annoyed. If you act irritated, worried, annoyed, angry, the brain will associate the song as important and keep reminding you that it is there. Also, don’t mentally check to see if it is there. That can also make it worse because we always find what we go looking for. Use my I. A.M. technique and just allow it to float there in the background unattended. Here is my I. Hi Rubina. Sometimes our anxiety can trick us to believe that something is wrong even though medical examinations prove that we are fine. If this is the case, we welcome the anxiety to be there, but do not avoid activities, tell ourselves fearful thoughts or try to help ourselves feel safe. That only reinforces the anxiety.

So I need to be fully mindful to understand this is not real - this is just a thought and anxiety and I need to accept that. When I want to sleep when I just woke up - i am not able to understand that is this thought and anxiety when I want to sleep it just as real.

Hi Michelle. If you have been checked out medically and everything is fine, it may be anticipatory anxiety that is creating that shaking and palpitation. Although things like caffeine can produce the same symptoms. Going for a walk or other movement activities can burn off some of the built up adrenaline and cortisol for those symptoms if they are indeed caused by stress or anxiety.
