For any young people, take it from a middle-aged guy. Out of my top ten regrets in life, at least four of them are punches I DIDN'T THROW from the ages of about 13-17. And those scars last longer than anything that comes from losing a fight.

depends on the crowd if you haven't learned to read them then don't do anything. Most the time one on one sure go for it if its a gang just take the hits. Had a kid in 9th grade permanently brain damaged by fighting the bully that had his boys with him. A group will do things far worse then what any single member would ever consider doing. Personaly I let them toss me about and get bored, though catching them alone and throwing them down a flight of stairs later is frowned upon by schools too, I swear no winning.

Long time ago I was on the track team in junior college. There was this building on campus where you could hang out. They had a snack bar and pinball machines. About 6 of us were sitting there just talking when we noticed a guy was trying to play one of the pinball machines. He was smallish and seemed to have maybe an emotional issue. There were 3 guys standing there who would deliberately bump the machine causing it to tilt and thus the guy would lose his quarter. This kept happening over and over, the guy was very upset and practically crying. We finally had enough, and we all pitched in about twenty quarters and I took them over to the machine and placed them on it, which is what you do to signify you're next in line. I told the guy, "here, keep playing". I then re-joined my teammates and we just sat and stared at the 3 bullies...just waiting for them to try and tilt the machine so we could go over and say "you just stole my money". None of us said a word to them at any time, just stared at them. They didn't know whether to s*** or go blind. Just like in the bar/biker scene in A Bronx Tale you saw their power just drain from them. They left. We were able to diffuse the situation without saying a word and without throwing a punch. It was the most right thing I ever did in my life. I would've done it alone too, my mates were great guys and had compassion and wanted to help.

I was a trombone-playing sophomore in high school, got bullied by a senior on my bus for bringing it home every weekend. Sadly, he pressed me until one day I just lost my shit and started swinging that trombone case. Broke a few of his ribs. Got a 3 day suspension. Totally worth it- and the trombone still worked fine. I was bullied as a child, like 8th - 10th grade. I was raised to be submissive, not to fight back. I was smaller and younger than my classmates. I just hoped it would stop, which of course it never did. I didn't realize it at the time but that's kind of how the whole world treats you. I have no regrets, it prepared me to carve out the great life I have now. You have to "fight" through life, not with fists necessarily but definitely with your words and actions. What stopped the bullying for me was, my dad had weights and I started working out. I quickly put a lot of weight on my arms, chest, shoulders, etc.... enough to look like I could do some damage. There was no epic "revenge fight"...people just stopped viewing me as an easy target....and i hold no grudges because it helped shape me into the person I am now. Im 49, loving life, and i still work out daily. I'm not real big anymore like when i was young, but I don't have the typical 49 year old looking body. When i look in the mirror i see an old mans head on a young mans body. :o)

I was in high school 38 yrs ago , a 11 grader, a basket ball player first name Dwayne tried to ask me out. I said no. I was shy. He bullied me . He would see me walking and though ice cream shakes at me from the 2nd level i was on the ground level. throw food at me . The other kids a lot thought it was funny. Well one day he escalated his abuse, he socked me in the jaw. I remember him telling me that I have never tried to talk to a girl and she wont give me a chance, he hit me. I was 5 ft tall 125 lbs he was 6 foot tall. He hit me in my jaw, I hit the pavement . we were down the street from the high school . He walked away with the rest of the kids.. like nothing. than i stumbled back to the school , told the principle - crying . The problem was I did not know his last name , he was a transfer from another school. The principle showed me a yearbook he was not in there. He showed me a year book from the previous year - still he was not in there. The principle said well there is nothing that I can do - if you do not know him. he did not even call my parents. my jaw was swollen from the assault. I caught the bus home, my dad called the principle and said you better find him or im suing cuz u did nothing . My daughter was assaulted. I had t o get medical therapy. I stayed off school for one month. The kids were around saw him , but silence- every was walking to bus. They were his friends. I came back to school one month later. The principle still said he could not identify the guy. I kept going to principle telling him I was being harassed before the assault - over 3 months. When I came back no one said a word, I refused to be a victim - so I went back. I was going to find his name. Well it was the new semester and he was in my English class. I finely discovered his name. I left the class and went and told principle his name and security escorted him to office. He was expelled , his parents were angry that he got expelled and wanted me to be expelled - as well (WTF). He assulted me and they wanted me to expelled - ignorance. After he left the same people that ran in his group , came up to me and they said im sorry I did not say anything.. Others could not look at me . . I never talked to anyone the rest of the school year I sued the school - they did nothing even though the abuse was being done . Well I went to collage and became a Trauma - ICU Nurse RN Nurse Practitioner , and some 20 yrs later I saw him in a CVS San Diego Ca. When I saw him I became scared and started to shake- remembering the assault and abuse. I tried to avoid him. At some point he recognized me. he came up and and said I know you. I was so scared - at the thought he was near me i was shaking - breathing hard hyperventilating. I guess PTSD from the trauma of the assault those 20 yrs ago. He said I wont hurt you .. He than said Im sorry.. So Sorry . Forgive Me . I could not take rejection and my pride was hurt .. I was young and had no conscious. Seeing him opened up old wounds...I looked at him and said u assaulted me and abused and bullied me. Made me the radicle of the high school , you abused me in ways that I don't want to remember. - both mentally and physically. I wanted to kill my self .. Being bullied like that. Do you what damage you did to me. I walked out he followed me abit and said - im forgive me. Im sorry but I cant.. I cried and walked way. Well one year later he came into the hospital where I worked as a patient, and was in the ICU. I had to treat him. When I walked in to the room I saw him and had to walk back out , I took a deep breath my heart was beating so fast. I said he is a patient nothing more. I walked back in the room . In the room was his mother father and his wife. He said , mom in a soft voice this was the girl I bullied and punched in the jaw when I was in high school.- the one they expelled me for. they all looked at me eyes wide open. I told him Im here to treat you , and I will do all I can to help you. I introduced my self. I treated him as a patient, every day I came to do rounds on him. And every day he would ask if I could come back and talk to him. One day his mother saw me in the hallway and said, fate has a way of showing us our wrongs. I finally talked to him as his mother and wife sat quietly. I listened. He told the entire story of abuse , i was uncomfortable- remembering , I told him I forgive you - you need to forgive your self. Omission of the abuse is the first step, second step is asking forgiveness of the ones you hurt. third is coming to terms with the pain you caused.

The teachers ended up breaking it up. I got sent home and my parents were like, "It's your first day at your new school and you're already being sent home for fighting?" I told them, "It was started by bully. I had to nip it in the bud, because if I didn't, it would never stop." I was bullied through elementary and JHS years and ran away from many confrontations which coincidentally improved my running skills. During high school freshman year, a phys Ed teacher recommended that I tryout for the track team. I’ll never forget the look on my coaches face after I took second place on my first race at a cross country meet. Coach Silverman standing at the finish line thought maybe I made a mistake and made a wrong turn on the course. I had outran every member on my school team and of course all of the senior runners were jealous. Luckily, a teammate backed me up and said I ran a legit race. The rest was history.

Brings back memories. I loved this movie when it came out. They felt like real kids dealing with real situations. I could relate to the helpless feeling of being picked on for no reason. Linderman's green army jacket seemed to be the preferred jacket of the troublemakers back then. This bully with the same jacket used to hang out by the admin building smoking cigs before school and would insult me as I walked past. I didn't even know the kid so I ignored him but one day I decided to say something back and he immediately came over and started a fight. I do recall being bullied and my dad just said you either take it or you do something about it. And when you do make sure everyone sees it. Because it doesn't matter what happens, everyone will know you aren't taking it. 2 weeks later, bully smacks me in the head and I pushed him into a fence, the fence collapsed (thank heaven for poor workmanship!) on him and I pounced got 4 or 5 good shots on him and a few other kids jumped on him and really got their anger out. By the time teachers and then cops came, you could see it really was the teachers saying the nerds had enough and destroyed him. The cops said it must have been the fence collapsing and bully went to a dentist. The bullys parents wanted my dad to cover the cost of braces! My dad let them know if he does he would also be paying for their Dads wheelchair. They ended up moving and it all ended.

Man, I haven’t seen this in about 40 years. Good movie & great performance from Adam Baldwin (Independence Day). It’s also a classic example of a guy who’s physically more than capable of defending himself but his mind won’t let him. I had that same problem all through elementary and middle school. But I finally got tired of the bullshit so I started taking Tae Kwon Do lessons. It went a long ways to instilling confidence in me & I finally was standing up for myself. I even beat up the neighborhood bully once in his very own front yard after he knocked me off my bicycle. I was kind of a hero after that because half my Neighborhood witnessed it & they hated him too. Haha. But yeah, it’s never fun to get picked on. The important thing though is to stand up for yourself & never allow yourself to be a victim.

I bought this movie on DVD a few years ago. Because of my own experiences being bullied, it's still a bit of hard watch. I see a lot of people here in the comments relating their own stories, so why not add mine: I grew up not knowing either of my parents. I was bullied a lot by the neighborhood kids who were alternately my friends, then my bullies, back and forth. My grandmother (who raised me) tried telling me to defend myself, but I had no one to teach me how. We ended up moving out of that neighborhood when I was 12. New neighborhood, new school, new everything. Including new set of bullies. I intentionally failed 7th grade in order to get away from them and refused Summer School. The following year, I did make some friends, but still had to deal with the bullies in the hallways. It sucked, because fights would go from one on one, to two on one, to three on one, all the way up to ten of them beating the ever-loving shit out of me in 9th grade right in front of the school's main office. One thing, is that I learned to take a beating by then, because when it was finally broken up, I stood up, face covered in blood, and smiled at each and every one of them. The next year I moved into high school, but things were a little different. New students there, who didn't know me, but apparently had heard I was a pushover. Two of them confronted me right at the end of lunch. As I bent down to pick up something a friend of mine dropped, one of the two hit me. I came up swinging this time. I hit the one so hard he spun around and fell on his ass. The other one took off running, leaving his buddy. I had snapped and beat this kid stupid. We were about the same size, even though he was younger than I was. It took five teachers to get us apart. We both got suspended for 3 days, but it was worth it. Finally, my grandmother was proud that I'd actually stood up to it and beat this kid's ass. That also ended the bullying. I'm 55 now, and still can't stand bullies. If I see someone getting picked on, I'll stand up for them, even though I'm disabled.

I’ve spent my life growing up in New York state. Didn’t realize I have a form of PTSD from growing up in crazy neighborhoods. What I thought was normal to me wasn’t normal to everyone else. You end up having a “fight or flight “ response that never turns off. I’ve used it to my advantage in life to pull myself out of poverty so my family never has to experience that lifestyle. I’m so glad I never gave up.

You're 100% correct, in that it gives you a form of PTSD (something that wasn't diagnosed back in the day). I've done my best to block out certain memories from the "cowardly act of running away", but it still comes back once in a while. Believe it or not, I went to my 15 year reunion, and pretty much "got back" at the bullies. I had conned the DJ into letting me use the microphone for a few minutes. I did a speech that Pro-Wrestling fans would call a "Promo". The funny part about that, was that afterwards, most (not all) of those I roasted up there, came to me and legit apologized for their behavior back then. I accepted their apologies, because to not do so, would have kept the burden on me, mentally. I also went to our 30 year reunion, and everyone was super cool to me. I'm glad that you've lived your life well, even if some of the struggles could be harsh. May you continue to thrive!

I was bullied repeatedly throughout my childhood, and most of the time just passively took it. But one time when I was in the 8th grade I finally decided I’d had enough. After being spit on by someone who’d bullied me the whole year, I threw a left and knocked four of his teeth out. For good measure, I pounced on him when he went down and pounded his head against the floor until he was unconscious. Believe it or not, I wasn’t suspended or even reprimanded, since the teacher had kept an anecdotal of the bullying. On the other hand, the other boy’s parents were told by the school to quietly transfer him and to not go after us for his dental bills, lest THEY be sued because of the bullying. I never was bullied again, especially after the next year when I suddenly grew six inches and went from being one of the smallest kids in the class to one of the biggest.

I was bullied as a kid Always got told to take it on the chin. Never once was I taught to stand up for myself. Whenever I went looking for help I got it even worse. Bullied by family. bullied by friends. Bullied by school kids. I was always made to feel like it was my own fault. It never stopped it still goes on today. Eventually you just turn on the world. I often think how my life could have been different if I had stood up for myself on multiple different occasions. Now I know if I stand up for myself I'll end up taking somebody's life. because the anger inside me is beyond comprehension for most people. I made millions of dollars but I don't feel any better. I still treat everybody with respect thinking that maybe somebody will respect me back but it doesn't happen. That kind of treatment with no action for your own betterment leaves you with scars real deep ones. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you're in this situation you should stand up for yourself and do it as early as possible. never take it on the chin because you'll just get laughed at. I was scared too death. The whole ride back to his bus stop he was trying to joke with me and relate with me and be my buddy. As soon as we both got off the bus I jumped on him and started swinging. Long story short...I lost the fight but gained his respect. The bullying ended right there. The moral of the story is you can lose a fight...just don't lose too badly.

The best way to defeat a bully is to always have an ace in the hole. The entourage of a bully is comprised of people whom are intimidated and afraid by the bully. A bully isn't entirely interested in friends. They are interested in controlling others through fear. A bully will not have anyone in his entourage whom can threaten his control and dominance over the others in his entourage. One way to keep a bully at bay is to marginalize his control over his/her entourage. A good way of doing this is to become a private investigator of sorts, and learn everything about the bully, his/her's family, and anything else which can be learned without drawing any unneeded attention from the bully. Information about the bully's entourage can also come in handy. Using this information can be useful when used to make the bully believe that someone else is trying to steal his control over his/her area. For instance, having a venue shut down just as an event given by the bully is getting started. Make sure that the bully gets information as to why the event is being shut down, and that information which led to shutting down the event was from an anonymous person. Just be sure that you have an airtight alibi should the bully "asks" you what you know about this incident. If done well, a bully will start to feel as though someone is breathing down their neck. Paranoia does not look well on a bully, and given enough time, bullies will usually hang themselves - resulting in prison time usually. Afterwards, taking the time to relocate somewhere else maximizes your chances that you will never see the bully ever again.

This isn't Burn Notice, man -- it's the schoolyard. Just punch them in the face when they fuck with you. You may or may not get an ass-kicking, but they'll find somebody else to pick on. Bullies prefer victims who don't fight back.

OneEyedJack1970 True. But there are those whom doesn't want to get an ass beating because they cannot stand pain or public humiliation. Besides, I found it rather funny when some geek gets a bully good without throwing a single punch. The level of planning involved is something to be admired. Shows imagination also.

I am a teacher. All my colleagues would say things like ''ignore them and they will ignore you, bla bla bla''. I've seen kids getting bullied when I was younger. I am always kinda close to some of them. They told me they still have scars due to the bullying they got. Many of them told me they regret not punching their bullies to make it stop. Even 15 years later. Therefore I take bullying extremely seriously. The kids I teach are around 10 years old. The first day, right after introducing myself, I make it very clear that no bullying will be even slightly tolerated. I also tell them that if the situation allows it, by that I mean if they are 1v1 against their bully they should hit them as hard as possible, because in the worst case the bully would kick the victim anyways. So why not trying to show them you are not an easy target and defend yourself. And of course, I wand my students to report all signs of bullying they witness or experience. I think I do not have to explain that many of my colleagues do not like my way of teaching but I do not care. The others kids now know by reputation that I will tolerate a certain amount of justified violence. None of my students got bullied more than once. And I will continue like this because I see far better results with that method than sugarcoating them. And when I look at how my colleagues handle similar cases, I am not going to change any time soon. The world is unfair by nature. I believe the sooner kids understand how to make themselves a place in it, the better. I teach them to be respectful and respected. Often, it is all an appearance game and one punch can break it all and free the ''victims'' for good.

As someone who went thru school from 77-90, this movie spoke volumes to me. It was hokey, but it really did speak to bullying and how to handle it....unlike what kids get taught nowadays. And the end was awesome. 😂😂😂
