Hello everyone!! Welcome to another episode of 'christy vs her air conditioner'. I hope the audio was okay, overall. I also ended up filming those close up shots of the shelves so that you guys would definitely be able to read the titles on the spines of the books. I know I turned away from the mic when I started talking at the shelves and that wasn't something I considered until I began editing it, so I hope it's okay! Also, at the end of this video I tried to have a little talk about book buying and sustainability and not wanting to overbuy things; I also could have flagged that I have this same mentality with EVERYTHING, not just books. I don't like the idea of being wasteful, or buying things and not being happy with them and getting rid of them (though, obviously donating is an option). Hence why there are no bedside tables next to our bed. We still havent found bedside tables that we like AND are affordable AND are small enough to fit the space. Therefore, no bedside tables at allllllllll hahaha Hope you guys like the video. Take care and enormous love 💛

I have the same book buying philosophy, and there's nothing better than to look at your bookshelf and seeing only things that you love! also libraries are awesome and supporting them is equally important because they allow everyone to have access to reading (and many more services). They are constantly underfunded so using them and supporting them is also very important.

Agreed! Libraries are magical 💛

Yes! My only problem with libraries is that the selection of books in foreign languages, at least in my experience, is meagre. I'm German but I like reading in French and in English particularly. My local library doesn't have a lot of books in other languages though, so I have to buy them.

Tell me why the last bit of the video got me choked up 🥺 it made me reminisce about going to the library, there’s just a different feeling when reading a book from the library compared to buying a book. It’s like you know you only have a limited time to get to know someone, but in this case getting to know the characters, story and author of a book. I also would stuff that canvas bag full of books when on a library trip😂 one duology series I ended up buying recently because I feel in love while reading them from the library is “Flame in the Mist” and “Smoke in the Sun” by Renée Ahdieh. She just writes so absolutely beautifully.

I have a very different point of view with books but it stems back to a childhood when a book was an escape to a safe other world. Because of this my books almost become physical personalities (friends) to me and I love beautiful editions because when I read them it heightens the experience. I recently went through my shelves and kept only those that were my absolute favourites (which was still a lot) and have been matching the others that I like but don’t love with different people I know, especially children. It has given me a lot of joy to hear back from them that they enjoyed reading or what they thought. I said if you don’t want to keep it that’s ok, pass it on.

I used to work at a bookstore and my book buying became an issue. I was buying 5 or more books for every 1 I might read. I had to pack them all into boxes because they couldn't fit anywhere. I then moved to Korea and decided to go a different route. Now, I rarely buy physical books, but I buy first editions or special version instead, so each one is important to me now. Moving my reading onto ebooks and audiobooks has really helped me as well. I read more than ever and I have room in my apartment for other things besides boxes of books now!

I really like that your bookshelves are not super organized, so I don´t feel bad about my own crowded ones. 😄😄 I just started to read the Graveyard Book and I already absolutely love it! Thank you for that recommendation 📖💚

I have exactly the same sentiment. My bulk of reading is from Scribd (cos I don't live in an English speaking country, so I can't access the library here) and as a minimalist (and a cheap ass), I'm very selective on which books that I'm willing to buy/spend money on (even ebooks!). My dream is to someday I'd have a small modest library, filled with my all time favorite books!

You talked about not having to own physical books in order to keep reading. Would you do a video about the new options of our era, audiobooks and ebooks? What is your relation with them, all that jazz?

I still buy physical books but I also engage in bookswaps on a lovely little Facebook group I’m part of. Every few weeks, someone will post the books they want to get rid off and will send them to others in the group for very little (often just the price of postage). It makes me feel better about getting rid of books I don’t enjoy because I know they’re going to others who genuinely love reading
@DrawingsFromAnna3 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same thoughts on how I decide whether I want to buy a book or not. I'll usually borrow it from the library first and then go out and purchase it if I fall in love with the story 😊 I'd love to just go out and buy heaps of books but honesty don't have the space to keep them all!!

I've just discovered your channel and it seems lovely. I very much enjoy the aesthetic of mismatched bookshelves, beat up paperbacks/well loved books, and books shoved where they fit. Its so relatable and I wish this was more prevalent on booktube!

After being in a similar position of having to move around to different countries for most of my 20’s, I have the same philosophy as you and was glad to hear a “booktuber” express that! Libraries are free so if you have the privilege of having English book selections why not use it and find a new favorite you could buy later on? Yay to creating the dream library with books that you adore! 🥰💕

I think you are the first person on KZbin who has mentioned John Harwood. I discovered him because of The Ghost Writer and fell in love with his writing. I've also read The Seance and Asylum. I keep wishing he would come out with more. He really knows how to creep a person out without grossing you out. Okay, I'll stop. Just happy to see any mention of him. Finally getting to watch this was like taking a big sip of freshly brewed tea in the morning. Refreshing, anticipated, and lovely. Your taste in books in amazing and diverse, and your care and appreciation for them is incredibly charming. Thank you for this little look into your bookshelves! For so many of us they're a growing representation of our personalities. I've felt so guilty collecting them and buying them because my mind thinks...go to the library, they're free and it's much more sustainable. Plus what if I hate it? And I grew without bookstores and money so going to library did feel quite indulgent. Matilda, eh? I am the same as you and read a lot (normally, outside of grad school). But I love to have them so I'm starting to allow myself to buy them! As you said, I will only actually buy ones I cherish and love, and that I'll reread/are sentimental. Other than that, I'm all about libraries! So I completely understand your torn feelings between supporting and buying. Also your outfit is soooo pretty!

Love how you have so many copies of Alice in wonderland! Because I do too. Haha and it seems like we have similar editions too hahahah.Glad I'm not the only one with a not-so-aestheticly organized book shelf hahah. But also, completely agree about sustainability. However much I would love to own SO MANY BOOKS, moving countries has taught me that it is difficult and not very sustainable to have so much stuff. I now opt to buy e-books, or borrow from my local library and try not to purchase too many things without mindfully thinking if I need them. I only buy a physical copy of the book if I know I will *absolutely* re-read the book. Thank you for sharing this!! 💕

I'm very picky with the books I own. I live with my parents and I only have one librery to put books in... so the books that I collect are Agatha Christie's books and illustrated classics (the rest are ebooks). I buy the classics even if I think I wouldn't like some of them, because most of the classics are so good that even if I don't like them now I think I would probably appreciate them more in a couple of years. And if I end up not liking some of them... maybe my partner or future kids would like those.

Thank you Christy. Bookshelves tell us a lot about people and I always enjoy seeing what people have upon their shelves. We have a wall of bookcases in our study filled with all manner of books. Read and collected by myself and my husband over our lives. I love that room so much, it is my quiet haven. I wish I enjoyed e books as much as turning pages, but I do not. I appreciate your environmental thoughts here. I do maintain a sustainable lifestyle except paper books remain my deep pleasure. 😀📖💚Deb

Hii Christy! 💕 I loved to see you talking about your filosophy on how/why to buy phisical books. Where I live (south america), books are really expensive (Mistborn, for example, it's $260 and the salary I was receiving was $1600), even the e-book ones, so I must be really sure I will love a book before buying it. It's really nice to see someone telling me that I'm not a "bad reader" for not owning too many books, or for listening them ☺️

Hi Christy! (I’ve been watching your videos for years but I think this might be the first time that I’ve commented 🙊). what a lovely video - thank you for sharing your bookshelves and thoughts! 💛 I so so love and second the idea of having only books that are beloved / special to me on my bookshelves! I studied abroad for 4 years (in Australia, actually!) and had a bookshelf really becoming for someone who was going to have to then deal with the amount of books owned overseas 😂 and when it came time to pack up and go back home, it really came down to which books I love enough to take with me! And the thought of unhauling and keeping beloved books stuck with me until now as I look at my (also overflowed and fun-stacked) bookshelves. Admittedly, it’s so hard to resist buying physical copies (especially when one can’t help but have to make a stop at the bookstore when the opportunity is there 😂), but I’ve been trying to be as mindful as possible about which books I’d really like to have and which ones I’d be okay with as an e-book or borrowed. I also love that you say that you’re happy to get the physical copy of a book even if you’ve read / have it as an Audiobooks - that’s love right there 🥰 much love! 💛✨

I really enjoyed watching this bookshelf tour! You are so passionate about books and it's contagious. I'm also very interested in this conversation about sustainability. With the pandemic I stopped ordering from places other than my local library of choice, unless I really need a specific book they don't have. I always do my best to buy near me so that the books don't travel too far, and if I can find them second hand it's even better. I don't live in an English speaking country but only read in English so that makes my case a bit particular, and I can't focus on audiobooks nor pay full attention to ebooks. I have completely stopped buying brand new clothing though, so I feel like the efforts I don't put on sustainably buying books go into my fashion habits. I also have a massive record collection... Similarly, if it's not a brand new album that just came out I try to hunt for originals from the decade the record was released in!
