ALEX and Noah matched on Bumble and fell in love, but despite their happiness, the couple have experienced lots of negativity surrounding their relationship. Alex has a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy type two and some people accuse Noah of having a disability fetish. Alex explained: "The assumption there is that disabled people aren't sexually appealing." Since falling pregnant with their first baby, Alex and Noah have been subjected to trolls calling the pregnancy "fake" and that it "should be illegal." Refusing to let the haters ruin their joy, the pair are focusing on their new arrival. Alex said: "We're very caring, loving people and we have the resources and love in our hearts to be able to raise a baby. We're very confident in that."

I’m a disabled woman in an interabled relationship. We have been married 18 yrs and have two kids. It’s hard going out and having people stare, especially now that my kids are old enough to notice it happening. I’m so happy for them and they’re going to be great parents.

I don't see an issue with the disability aspect of the relationship however the fact that he is a three time recovering addict is concerning. I worked with addicts before and they struggle for a long time. Stress is a major trigger. A baby and a disabled partner on top of the time line of the relationship can really be difficult. He will really need to vigilant on his recovery and have laser focus. I wish them well but indeed I hope he his his sponsor on hand

Im happy for them. Disabled people are still human. And they desire everything that you and I do. But society puts extreme limitations on them even beyond there disability. I pray everything works out perfectly health wise for her and her baby. I had 2 emergency c-sections and it’s very difficult as a non-disabled person. And I had major rare complications from the anesthesia. I was told 1% of women have the outcome I had. And I was extremely healthy 21 year old at that time. I’m fine I recovered thankfully and it was almost 18 years ago. So I know medicine advanced since then. Wish them all the best. And I pray he is able to handle everything and remain sober. I’m a sober person also. It is extremely hard to fight addiction and it’s a life long battle.

That’s very worrisome!!! Having a baby while in recovery can either make or brake you. I have been sober from a life long battle w/ opiates after being drugged heavily as a child and teen by my adoptive parent. I thankfully was never a partier and I was a “functioning” addict for near 25 years. And I am 39 now. I quit for the final time a few years ago. But it’s a absolutely life long battle and once your brain experiences heavy opiate use for an extended period of time it’s never the same. I am feel it worse as I was started so young and I’m sure it effected the brain developing. I absolutely would never be ok or have an successful abstinence from drugs if I didn’t get proper medication to even out my brain inbalance. Also I take medication that blocks my body from even being capable of getting high, which helps my brain from even considering relapsing knowing it’s not even going to work on me. It’s hard to explain but as much as my logical reasoning absolutely never wants to go back, addicts have to fight their own unconscious thoughts/desires that trick an addict into thinking o just one more time is ok etc. fighting internally w/ your own mind is absolutely exhausting and takes years to stabilize. He is less than a year sober. and the evidence shows addicts should remain single and not even date for the first year sober/or directly after they relapse. Relapse is a part of recovery and 90% experience at least one. Just don’t let it send you spiraling back to the daily use. And forgive yourself and get straight back to the strict program/treatment! This is all way too much for a newly sober person. I am a mother and have 2 healthy teen children who are wonderful but still especially my 17 yr old daughter can say/do things that send me to dark places where I want to use. I don’t obviously but still that took years of work to figure out. I can’t not imagine having a new baby now. And I’m over 2 years clean from my last relapse. And I still work a Daily outpatient rehab center 6 days a week!’I am so concerned for this family. I wish them the best. And sober addicts deserve happiness and family etc. just has to be done in a very strict planned out way. And this isn’t. But I hope it works out!!! And I hope he is going to meetings or outpatient for at minim a year or two. Raising kids is very hard and newborns are a lot of work. Wonderful work but still. And when the mother is not physically able to do a lot and also needs your help. It will be super overwhelming. Praying for all 3 of them but especially for the unborn innocent baby.

Okay this whole relationship has so many red flags waving in it. And not because it's an inter abled relationship cuz disabled people have every right to be with somebody. But they have only been together 7 months and she is already pregnant and this guy can't stay sober. I heard he recently relapsed and in this video he has barely recovered. Everything is moving too fast here and she doesn't really know him and what happens when she's immoblile and he relapses yet again and now there's a baby involved? On her part she should have taken this slow cause in the long run this may bite her in the ass cause she doesn't really know him and he is not a place where he can honestly say he beat his addiction when he hasn't.

Shes a female with SMA, so there's an increased risk that the child will also have SMA. If so I hope they do not have a severe type. My friend's baby passed away at 3 years old because of it. I'm happy for them but I wonder if it's fair or ethical to get pregnant knowing that child is at an increased risk for life suffering ahead. There's a different between knowing and not knowing. If I unexpectedly had a child with SMA, I'd love them so very much. But if I knew that I likely would before conceiving, I would not. SMA is very similar to ALS (but with MUCH earlier onset). Muscles deteriorate eventually reducing your ability to breathe on your own.

I don’t see any problem with their relationship - what does it matter if she is disabled? The only concern I would have is the short time they have been together for them to already be bringing a baby into the world. I know love can blossom quickly, I was engaged to my now husband after just 6 months and we have been a couple for more than 22 years. But in every relationship there are challenging times ahead and I hope they have the love and commitment to stay together no matter what. Otherwise I anticipate bringing up a baby alone would be more difficult for her than an abled bodied person and worse case scenario I just wonder how she would cope alone.

My girlfriend happens to be very petite. Does that mean I have a fetish for small women? You are basically saying that she should only date disabled men, because there is a possibility that a man who is not disabled has a fetish? You’re basically putting down a grown woman for her own choices by insinuating that she is incapable of making those choices for herself due to her disability. By your logic, if I say that I’m not a drug dealer, or a rapist, that should be investigated, because “of course he is just saying that”. Well, I said it. Maybe I’m “just saying it”. I think you should report me to the police immediately if this is how your brain works. Sounds like you have been burned by men and are jealous that she has found happiness with someone that accepts her for her disability. Maybe men in your life didn’t exactly accept your hateful, intolerant view of others. Most men would rather spend time with a disabled woman with a great personality, or frankly, a giant mound of cow shit, over you. Talk about being ablest. So she can’t be happy just because you are miserable? Get the hell out of here with that shit. My girlfriend is a human with a need to urinate throughout the day, does that mean I have a piss fetish? Jesus Christ. I’m sorry the men in your life have just ended up being baby daddies. Don’t blame this young woman for your horrible choices that have lead you to have this horrible inexcusable attitude regarding a disabled woman. Just judging by your ridiculous name and profile picture I bet you weigh about 300 pounds. And so I guess it’s OK for you to talk shit as you are technically also disabled. Please leave the motorized carts alone. There are elderly people who need to use them at Walmart.

To prove this negative statement, you only have to look at the ID card of your father and compare it with yours. Of course, there are different types of knowledge. Proving the above statement is way easier and the proof is convincing compared to proving that someone does not have a fetish. But again, it is not impossible.

I think she has since said they have broken up. I'm not sure why they split, but the amount of hatred they received for choosing to be parents was out of line. I am a disabled person and she is one of the few examples of disabled motherhood I have seen. Would I choose to have a child in these circumstances as a disabled woman? No. I think being a disabled woman in a relationship with someone you hardly know who is also a recovering addict and then adding into that unplanned pregnancy has the potential for too much instability and I would not choose that. BUT and this is a really important but, disabled people have the right to make choices and determine our own lives (including choices other people might not like). I can't believe I have to state that in 2023, but I feel like a lot of the hate she gets is essentially paternalism and people being big mad at her for making these kinds of choices. It's still her right.

@Jarvis_Mari
@Jarvis_Mari Жыл бұрын
I know you're coming from the right place, but calling someone a saint for this is... How do I put this? 🤔 It basically feels like a slap to the face of the disabled person in an interabled relationship. It raises the able bodied partner as someone who is selfless and sacrifices everything for their partner while the disabled person is looked at as a burden to them, so it comes off as an ableist term. I myself am disabled, rely on a wheelchair and other mobility devices, and yes, also rely on my partner to help me with the things that I cannot do. If someone called him a saint for loving and choosing to date me, that would hurt a lot. It does not take a Saint to love someone despite their differences. Yes, there are a new set of challenges that come with interabled dating that you wouldn't normally have, but every relationship is challenging in its own way, even for "normal" couples. While my partner doesn't have to help me with ALL aspects of caring for me, there is still a lot that I cannot do that he helps me with, and often does so without me even having to ask. It's almost like he can read my mind at this point. I asked him his thoughts on the subject of hypothetically being called a Saint for loving me and he said, basically, that he doesn't see it as something to be praised as saintly. That I'm still a human being worthy of love just as anyone else is. Even when we first started dating nearly 13 years ago at the age of 16, he knew that none of my limitations mattered to him in the long run, because at any point in a person's life, they could encounter an accident and become disabled. He took into account my physical limitations, my autism, my PTSD, anxiety, depression... all of the things that come with those differences and decided that he wanted to be with me no matter what, even if I don't live to an "average" lifespan, since, again, anyone could die at any time for any reason. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to explain why calling someone a saint in this instance can be emotionally harmful to disabled individuals. It's not limited to dating either. People get called a Saint for raising a disabled person, being friends with one, for having a career in caretaking, etc. I've heard that word my whole life and it made me feel like a burden to my family and friends until he walked into my life and taught me that I am not a burden. That I am not useless. That I am deserving of romantic love. That there is SO much that I can do, so many things that I am talented at, and that my life is worth so much more than I grew up thinking it was worth. He is not a saint. Everyone has their flaws. He is, however, a really amazing, funny, caring and understanding person who doesn't want me to be anything apart from my true self and I'm lucky to have someone like him. Though he sees it as he is the lucky one to have me, and often jokes that he is surprised that I put up with his shenanigans after all these years, to which I respond, "Now why on Earth would I return a free service animal"? (That joke cracks him up to no end. 🤣)

Ignorant people seem to have a big issue with Noah being her caregiver... but I don't see it as any different than my relationship with my (also) able-bodied partner. He put a scarf on her before they went outside; I get my partner's shoes and water bottle by the door before we leave. He helps feed her; I pack a lunch every day. Very little difference. When you truly love someone... helping them isn't a chore.

It's a valid question. She can't care for herself so it's going to be impossible to care for a newborn. What's she gonna do when the baby becomes a toddler? I hope they do stay together Cz there's no way she will b able to look after a child on her own

Chronic illnesses are a disability. You can be able to walk and still be disabled. There’s so many ways you can be disabled. For example, I can walk but I can’t drive because of how extreme my fatigue is. I can’t stay awake behind the wheel. That’s a disability.

I used to date a girl in a wheelchair. It's shocking people look at interabled relationships and judge. I personally look for the personality of a person (unfortunately, we did break up because of toxicity), but I felt a spark at first, and tried to light a fire. However being someone who's job Field revolves around disabilities, I'd ask you to consider how you'd feel if you had a physical (not mental) disability, and wanted love or a relationship. The fact that people would assume her pregnancy is fake is evidence of her claim that people with disabilities aren't seen as 'sexy.' I would say they are also not seen as sexual; as if they are incapable of desire. People living with disabilities are STILL PEOPLE!
