One other thing: I consider Michael Jordan the GOAT if I’m forced to pick just one player. BUT - there is only one NBA player that MJ never got the best of: Larry Bird. I sh*t you not. MJ was 0-6 against Bird’s Celtics in the playoffs, and 11-17 in the regular season. It kind of makes you wonder. Only against Coach Larry Bird’s Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Finals did MJ ‘s Bulls prevail - by 4 points in the 7th game. Like I said, both were incredible competitors in addition to having enormous talent. It was a toss-up between these 2 gladiators. And so fun to watch them square off. Bird & Magic were even better to watch compete against each other. Those were the days….

I’m curious, why would you chose MJ over Larry when Larry shut out MJ for two seasons with a broken spine, and MJ himself said that the only reason there was an Age of Jordan was because Larry Bird retired?
@Widdermaker Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-cl7xd It’s a close call. Bird’s Celtics swept Jordan’s Bulls when they were still building their future super team. Would the 84-86 Celtics beat the 91-93 or 96-98 Bulls? We’ll never know. But THAT’S a matchup I’d LOVE to see. Also, had Jordan’s father not been murdered, causing MJ to skip playing in the NBA for 2 years during his prime basketball-playing years, it’s likely Jordan’s Bulls could have won it all 8 years in a row. Even 6 out of 8 years, as they did, is monumental domination over the league. On the other hand, the Celtics had much tougher competition over the years against the superb 76ers early on and the “Showtime” Lakers later. Plus, Bird hurt himself off-season 1985 doing concrete/gravel work on his mom’s driveway, shortening his career (damn you, Larry!) One-on-one, MJ is the quicker, better ball-handler, stealer, and shot manufacturer. But on a team basis, long shooting, assists, rebounds, blocks, and clutch plays, I give the edge to Bird. Regardless, it’s tough call. I go back & forth. Ask me tomorrow and I’ll probably say Bird was the GOAT. One thing is clear: BOTH were the most competitive and mentally tough players to ever grace a basketball court, in my opinion. And they absolutely HATED losing.

I think MJ is the undisputed GOAT... and full respect to Bird and everybody else... but it's not close. In my opinion, longevity is a factor... and that does cost Bird a bit in the big picture. While Bird's Celtics and Isiah's Pistons kicked Jordan in the teeth for his first 5 years, they also had much more complete teams. Once Scottie Pippen developed into a legit #2, that's all Jordan needed... a legit 2nd banana... and he was off to the races. Only the "conspiracy theory gambling suspension" / minor league baseball detour stopped Jordan from pulling down eight rings. He won six rings with lesser supporting casts then Bird or Magic/Kareem or Isiah did in the 80s... against an arguably more talented overall opponent base. All that said... if Dr. Emmitt Brown came to me in his Delorean time machine and said that I could have five years of any basketball player I wanted, I'm taking Prime Bird and not even thinking twice about it. Let my opponent have five years of Prime Jordan, Prime Bird is going to make more plays overall. He's going to pull down more boards, he's going to block more shots, he's going to reach into more passing lanes, he's going to make a ton more assists... Prime Bird is frighteningly good for that five year stretch... Jordan's peak is higher for scoring, but lower for everything else. The all-time GOAT discussions heavily favor Jordan only when you bring longevity into the discussion.

The G.O.A.T, debate NEEDS to be subjective, it's no fun any other way, To state one guy as the G.O.A.T. as fact is boring for fans of the game. It's the debate that is fun. Having said that what I have noticed upon revisiting Bird's career in all of these videos is other G.O.A.T.s either say "Bird was the best player they ever played against" or "He taught me a lot about how to play the game" or "he brought the best out of me, I had to up my game while facing him." While younger players like LeBron acknowledge people before him that he wanted to pattern his game after. Taking all of that into account. If you remove Larry Bird from the history of the NBA altogether you then have other G.O.A.T.s not playing as hard as they might have to even become the G.O.A.T.s they are considered to be. You no longer have the 86 Celtics team and what they did being taught to most NBA players on how to play as a team. You have no great players today looking at film of Larry showing them what was possible or how much hustle and playing hurt means if you wan to be a great yourself. This is what Clayton (maker of the video) means when he says "Larry left so much DNA in the game..." It is never discussed enough in the G.O.A.T. conversation the question of "What does the sport look like today WITHOUT a Larry or Jordan?". It is definitely a way to determine who were the greats. Having said that, I have watched all of the "Making the Case" series and each time I finish one I say to myself "well maybe THEY were the G.O.A.T.:" That shows how subjective it can be. I would just hope younger fans realize when oldheads talk about the G.O.A.T.s that they are Basketball fans and have watched the sport for decades, they see the new guys, they are still fans but they have also seen the older players and are making their case having seen it all. Whereas I see kids on youtube just saying "so and so is the G.O.A.T." having never seen the legends of the past play. The difference is older fans and ex players HAVE actually seen both older and newer players play and are giving their opinion. If you are young you can ONLY see newer players play so no matter what you think you are at a disadvantage whether you like it or not. A youtuber Jonny Arnett does a series too. His Larry Bird one really goes into detail on Bird's injuries while doing all he did. For me it makes his case even stronger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYqqfYp5n815ZpY

The stat that's the most impressive to me is this; in a 9 year run from 1980 to 1989, Larry Bird got 67% of all MVP votes that were cast. All other players combined only received 33% of the votes. I don't know how many votes there are in a given year, but let's pick a random number of 30 votes per year. Over 9 years that's 270 total votes. Larry Bird would have gotten 180 votes for league MVP of the 270 votes cast, leaving just 90 votes to divide up among the many other great players at the time. That's a stunning statistic. In a 7 year stretch during that run, Bird got 3 mvp awards in consecutive years and finished 2nd in the voting the other 4 years. For 7 consecutive years those who voted said he was the best or 2nd best in the league. In the other 2 years he came in 4th in his rookie year while winning the Rookie of the Year award. His worst finish in those 9 years was 3rd in 1988 I believe.

The difference is the physical stature of players today, not the skill set or athleticism. Plenty of that back in the day….the biggest difference is heart….today’s players, most of them, do not have the heart the players did back in Larry Joe’s day. They truly played for the love of the game…not the shoe contracts, sports drinks, and billions of dollars. They didn’t jump teams and form “super teams” ,they definitely didn’t talk politics and try to be an “influencer”. They played the game. Today’s woke ass wusses could learn a thing or two about shutting up and playing, about dedication, about selflessness. About playing through injuries that my niece could get over. Those days are over though sadly.

Bird and Magic together saved basketball. Their rivalry made the 1980's the single greatest decade of NBA basketball. Even better than their rivalry was their friendship which started back in college, grew during their first two NBA seasons as the spokesmen for Converse and continued throughout their playing careers. When Magic was diagnosed with HIV it was Larry Bird who called him first to give him support. They were simply two men of very different backgrounds who loved the game of basketball and both gave it everything they had.

I watched that game on TV back in 1979. I knew Michigan State would win (and they did 75-64) because I’d seen them play throughout the year. MSU wasn’t just Magic Johnson, although he was clearly on another level. They had another phenomenal player named Greg Kelsor. And a deep bench. And a Hall of Fame Coach - Jud Heathcote. Indiana State relied too heavily on Larry Bird. As terrific as he was, his overall team was no match for the Spartans. That would change in the NBA. Larry was league MVP for 3 straight years! He had a killer instinct like Michael Jordan. And he was like the Incredible Hulk - the madder Larry got, the better Larry got. As Isiah Thomas once said: “You put me, Larry Bird, Magic, and MJ in a room, Larry’s probably the guy that walks out.” Some guys just have that intangible strength and will to win - Larry’s one of them. He definitely wanted the ball in tight, end-of-game situations. And he almost always delivered.

Indiana St. had a bunch of future insurance salesman on the team. They had NOBODY. Michigan State's second best player Greg Kelser could've beaten Bird's other teammates by himself. That's how bad Bird's 'supporting' cast was. The most important thing about that game is the fact that, it is the highest rated, MOST WATCHED basketball game, college or pro in the history of this country TO THIS DAY. That game whetted the public's appetite for the things to come. That game, and not the famous Louisville 'Doctors of Dunk' vs. Houston's high-flying PHI SLAMMA JAMMA Final 4 game in 1983 should be named the WELCOME TO THE FUTURE game. The decade of the 80's was coming and Bird and Magic were set to own it. The NBA has not looked back since.

The fact that he was still putting up mvp numbers after that is incredible. Larry was stubborn and cost himself a longer career by not taking great care of his body. The point was; one of the greatest rivalries in all sports began in that Bird-Magic NCAA championship game and continued at the highest level of the NBA, the Playoffs for the next few years. It was the point where basketball was at the pinnacle in my estimation. And call it the aligning of the stars or just a freak-out of nature, but it was a real thing, perhaps never to be repeated; where two players rose in parallel in their careers and were so much alike; accept for the salt and pepper or ebony and ivory detail.

React to “ Larry Bird’s Greatest Game ‘ I should have quit right there’ “. For me , Larry Bird is the greatest not just because of how good he was , but that he still dominated playing with an injured back half of his 13 year career. I think he injured his back in 1985 and it only got worse until he retired. That’s not including the bone spurs in both his heels that he had to have surgery for and played only 6 games in that 88-89 season as well as other injuries like a fractured right cheek. He even injured his finger in a softball game just before he started in the NBA. He said that he never had the same feel for the basketball . You can react to “5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit “.

There is always a comparison between larry bird and lebron james. What people dont typically think about is the psychological battle. If lebron played in the 80's Bird would psychological destroy lebron in that first playoff series where theyd meet

The greats are always going to be great. You said it, I agree. They used to have the never give up mentality. I don't think they have that dedication now.

The Celtics team play, ball movement, etc was amazing. I think the 86 Celts were maybe the best TEAM ever. But most of that was because of Bird

Just a comment on Kareem and his unblockable sky hook. Watching a KZbin on Wilt Chamberlain. They showed a montage of him blocking shots. And yes, one of them was Wilt jumping up and blocking Kareem’s sky hook. The narrator never mentioned it. Maybe in the same video I learned Wilt was a three time winner of the Big Eight’s high jump and that he ran a 4.7 40. A tremendous athlete.

The game is always evolving. The new learn from the Birds, Magics and Jordans who in turn learned from the Russels, Wilts, and Pistol Petes. The reason the new generation doesn't get the respect from the older generation is because of the soft ruleset. Fouls getting called for looking at someone wrong and the lack of hustle and discipline. Guys didn't skip games because they had a cold - they played with every ounce of heart they had. This new generation of player is more concerned with the money than the game.

The Lakers had 4 #1 overall draft picks on their team at one time (Kareem, Magic, Worthy, and Mychel Thompson). Michigan State had 3 first round picks on their championship team (Magic, Greg Kelser, and Jay Vincent). I grew up a huge Celtics fan, so I always say that Magic played with Hall of Famers and Bird made Hall of Famers. I'm thankful I grew up watching Bird and Magic's UNSELFISHNESS saved the NBA!! Great reaction fellas, keep it up 🤙!

You know if the Lakers had the balls to do it they could of had Larry Legend Bird instead of Michael Thompson yes I know they would of had to wait a year to get Bird but still

Larry Bird had been knocked to the floor with his blocked shot, he picked himself up and ran the width of the court and stole the inbound pass from Isaiah.

Remember back in the day they had less rules than new players that you're so celebrating their skills. They couldn't make it in the old league where people were ruffer.

I think today's NBA is more fundamentally sound than it was in the 70's and 80's. Today's NBA play a more Bird like style. Why is today's NBA better at fundamentals. I think you can clearly see Bird's impact on the sport even in today's NBA.

he was fourth in MVP voting his rookie year, he was second in votes the three years before he was the MVP three years. i believe they was another second place before the 80s ended. played his last 7 years with his bad back. the GOAT

Mindset and the changing of times/rules. Those of Larry's era could play today. Those of today would not (not could not) play yesterday. Look at the lack of 3 point shots, longer distance from the 3, no blood no foul, playing while hurt, lack of medical advancements, etc.

Parish and Hale ATE well BECAUSE of Larry. He kept feeding them. Especially Hale, but Parish also... They were good players, but they weren't on the same level as the Lakers 3.

Thank you. I live close to MSU and remember that game. MSU is big. They had a powerful team, and they put 2-3 players on Bird to stop him, because his team wasn't as talented and depended on him not only for his shooting, but for getting the ball to them.

The game is just different...the athleticism of today wouldn't have been displayed as much back then because the physicality was different.

Fact. The Celtics beat the Bulls in the finals. Jordan didn't start winning championship rings until Bird retired in 1993.
