My Brother Overheard His Wife Asking Me To Pay To Edit Out My Disabled Daughter...- Reddit Stories

My Brother Overheard His Wife Asking Me To Pay To Edit Out My Disabled Daughter From Their Wedding Photos And Immediately Kicked Her Out.
--------
David, the author's brother, had always been a loving uncle to her disabled daughter, Katie, and insisted she be included as a flower girl at his wedding despite it initially being child-free. However, his wife, Amelia, reluctantly agreed but imposed unreasonable conditions on Katie's appearance. Katie’s participation brought joy to the wedding, and her presence was celebrated by family and guests, except for Amelia, who subtly showed her displeasure throughout the event.
After the honeymoon, Amelia revealed her true feelings, privately demanding that the author pay to edit Katie out of the wedding photos or make her appear wheelchair-free, claiming Katie had "ruined the vibe." Shocked and enraged, the author confronted her, and the argument escalated when David overheard Amelia's cruel remarks. Furious at Amelia’s blatant ableism and manipulation, David defended his niece, declared his love for her as family, and ended his marriage, asking Amelia to leave.
Amelia's attempts to reconcile were insincere and fueled by her desperation to save her reputation. Despite her manipulative efforts and accusations against the author, David annulled the marriage. The family, including the previously strained relationship with the author’s parents, united in support of Katie and her mother, rejecting Amelia's toxic behavior.
Months later, David and Katie’s bond remains strong, and the ordeal has brought the family closer, affirming their love and commitment to embracing Katie as she is. Amelia’s actions, though hurtful, ultimately led to a resolution that strengthened familial ties and reinforced the importance of standing up against prejudice.

If she thought having a child in a wheelchair in some photos was "embarrassing" imaging what people will think about the divorce/annulment happening days after coming back from they honeymoon (regardless of reason).

I would have been so proud of how caring and protective my husband was over his niece. It shows his strong character and values. If anything it would make me love him more. Amelia is disgusting

Good on her brother for standing up for his niece. I am wondering how he could have missed such a huge red flag in the person he married… but he did make up for it so there is that. Also… what kind of person thinks less of a child in a wheel chair? If you think being around disabled people is awkward then you have serious issues. SMH.

It's amazing what people can hide before they are legally tied to their partners. In some cases it's a whole other family.

@@victoriaholt2274 That requires honesty on the part of the one you are interrogating. At least now background checks are so easy, but still, those don't cover crazy 😂

I am relieved that her true character was revealed before the situation could escalate further. Had this not occurred, the niece may have encountered additional drama. Fortunately, the conflict was restricted to verbal exchanges. It is concerning to consider the potential consequences that could have arisen; this situation might have developed into physical abuse perpetrated by the toxic sister-in-law.

As someone who is a wheelchair user myself my heart broke listening to this story, but I’m so glad it has a happy-ish ending. Shame on that woman for being so ableist she’s gonna miss out on getting to know an amazing person, and a huge round of applause for the uncle for standing up for her whether she knows it or not.

I don’t know why people are weirded out by people in wheelchairs. I guess I’m kinda desensitized to it seeing as two people I know through middle and high school were wheelchair-bound.

I used to have a fear of people with amputations as a kid. I'm over it now, but even then I'd be ashamed to have acted anything like this bride.

It is good for the brother to remove the ableist out of his life. Who knows what would have happened if they had a child who was born disabled if she acts this way. Even though it may be their child, she could still be ignorant.

It's fair to want photos with just your family, but it sounds like Amelia wanted Katie removed from every photo.. Which isn't right.

After your own parents (in some cases when parents are just terrible) having a good auntie or uncle is the best. My God kids (nieces and nephews) still send me fathers days cards, because i was more of a dad than their own father. They still send me cards and my oldest niece is 20. So this is a good uncle

Honestly, I'm really happy for her brother for realizing and recognizing a truly vile multi-cellular amoeba for what it is. My uncle was not capable of such a feat and sadly is still married to the spawn of Satan and has alienated pretty much all of his friends and family, including his only niece, who was once like a daughter to him.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It’s tough when family members fail to see things for what they really are, but it’s inspiring to see that some can recognize the toxicity and make the decision to stand up for themselves. I’m really sorry to hear about your uncle’s situation, though - it’s heartbreaking when someone close to us gets caught up in something so damaging. Hopefully, one day he’ll see it for himself and be able to make a change. Keep supporting those who do recognize their worth!

to be fair (I'm hoping it's a bit over-empathized) but it DOES seem like the husband talks a LOT about Katie. I think it would irritate me too if it was my wedding and suppose to be a happy day for me and my partner but.. asking to have Katie edited out of the photo and the way she did it? Cruel. Absolutely cruel. I do think the husband is a little too obsessed with Katie but it's important to show support to children and she's not "ruining" any photos.

I don't know what to think. On the one hand, I don't think it's right how she talked about her husband's niece. On the other hand, I also understand her side. Her husband is so infatuated with her and totally neglects her feelings. Was there no photo where the niece wasn't on it? It wouldn't have been right not to invite her in the first place, that's true, but putting her in the focus of everything wasn't okay either. Both sides have made mistakes and a compromise could be found. I don't think it's right how everyone reacted when she expressed her feelings. You also have to see that she may still have to learn how to deal with disabled people. Many are still afraid of contact and do not know how to deal with it or how to think about it. You could have approached it more gently instead of just assuming that she accepts it without ifs and buts, even if she has never had contact with something like that before. I don't think it's right to blame her completely for this now, after all, she also tried to integrate her at the wedding, even if she didn't want to. This shows that she is willing to compromise. It could have been solved differently than in the situation

An unnecessarily long story. Too much unnecessary narration, so an extremely boring story, I can't bear to listen to the end.

Opie is a trifling mother for not opening her mouth. Then you allowed your brother to marry this evil ass woman. I feel sorry for the little girl that has a mother like this and the brother that has a sister like this that act like she can't open her mouth and take up for her child and her brother.

CyberWhile I do not agree with what happened, I do have to agree with the bride in one instance. There was no need for the child to be in every single photo. I don't understand why there can't be photos of just her and her family, the bridal party only, just the bride and groom, etc. And your brother was wrong also, insisting that the child be in every photo, taking away from the bride and the event. This was the day for the bride and groom, not for the child. And with that thought OP, you are also incorrect. You should have known that your child did not need to be in every single photo. You and your brother caused the initial problem. This could have been handled much better on your end. Everyone is the AH here. BTW, Your mother had no right to say anything after the way she treated your daughter after she was born. . If it took this long for your mother to come around , how do you expect your SIL to handle things.

I think the uncle needed to try to find a better female than Amelia because she thought that Katie would slow everything down because of her disease.🦠 I love how he stood up for his niece and did not treat her as a problem child.😍😍😍
