Kim, funny you just posted this as I just went on a first test drive in the upper trim VF8 yesterday. I agree there is much to like about it, and their pricing and warranty offers a very good bargain in relation to the other EV SUV choices out there. Pros: the design looks better than any other EV SUV available right now, many higher end options are included in their base package, warranty and cash back in case of car problems. Cons: Software Interface still a bit clunky but will improve OTA as they sort out kinks, it is heavier vehicle and not as nimble feel as others, not just a new car model, but an entirely new car company (sort of) . Good chance next version VF8 in a year or two will have learned and greatly improved design and features of the entry version (of course those could then cost much more $$$$ by then if successful) Was very happy overall and placed my order after the drive. Willing to grow with them, they i did with my 2012 Model S a decade ago. One additiional thing with Vinfast unlike other new EV companies trying to break into the market, is that they part of huge conglomerate Vingroup, and not just a EV company. Meaning they have very deep resources to survive and weather short term market trends, unlike that are more at risk of failing. Note: one newly discovered bonus was they found that their range is actually about 20km more than what they had previously quoted.

As an ICE and hybrid car driver with a family and not as an EV expert focusing on technology, I think I like some of the more practical aspects of the VF8. A larger rear window to see out of while driving, HUD so that I don't have to glance sideways, some convenient buttons so that I don't have to reach for the center screen, sun shade on sunnier days, voice control to activate things like AC/heat adjustment and radio volume instead of reach for the center screen, some buttons for common tasks, basically less distraction while driving. I'm glad Vinfast allows both Apple and Androi for their cars though. Again, for an ordinary person, I think these are practical features that I use and benefit more than the underlying technology. I think Vinfast made a big mistake when they launched the City Edition as the first impression of the first model leaves long lasting negative impressions not to mention software glitch due to the rushed delivery.

Well, that was just, kind of a marketing strategy by bringing a surprise to early users, because one thing about these VinFast EVs is that their range can be improved after OTA software updates, and once those City Edition cars get the updates, they will no longer be any different from the Standard Edition ones, which can impress the early users so that they can convince others to buy.

I test drove one, I found it to be so quiet, it had acceleration without drama. It just goes. Sunroof is great, seats were very comfortable and the cars looks were exceptional. I didn't buy one yet but I did start a position in buying their stock VFS. I will be adding to it on any dips at this point. I stopped in at the first US Dealership and met the sales manager and marketing person. I also took the time to check out the new Production plant in NC. I have done zero research in EV cars so can't compare yet.

No way, EV's are just a sidestep to the real thing. Nowhere in the world are the governments ready for the EV...grid's not ready and will never be.. Range problem will never get solved. Hydrogen is the answer!! I'm laughing so hard all these people buying these 50K+ overpriced EV's ready for the scrapyard when the real solution will be introduced. That's the moment I will trade in my trusty ICE car.

Thank you Kim for the informational video. I am a VF8 City Edition owner since March 18, 2023. I have many videos about my user experience with the VF8 Plus. I love the car and I agree with you about the actual range, which is about 10 to 40 miles above EPA’s depending on your driving modes.

I like the green, blue, red... The orange is rather "special" but potentially a bit of a "love/hate" thing. I'm less of a fan of black/white/grey/silver but that's because I prefer my cars to have a COLOUR 😀

Only 128 car registrations in U.S since January, this company will go under. One registration in February, followed by 16 in March, 66 in April and 45 in May. With labor cost of $4000/year in Vietnam, it should cost $20K.

Thank you for sharing, I have had the VF8 on a real-world test drive in LA. I like the vehicle overall for its value. A few items, that made me hesitant at this time to get one is, the lack of ONE PEDAL driving, it felt very cumbersome when driving on the streets in stop-and-go traffic. The steering was not smooth, the hood seemed like it went on forever making it harder when pulling into a parking space. I think this is due in part to the chassis coming from being used on ICE vehicles prior. I do hope they resolve a few of my negatives. I will keep an eye on it because, for a family vehicle, the value is there!

I have a model 3 and it’s been great. I’ve never seen the model 3 and Y as luxury cars. If they were they’d have features like heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheels and power frunk/trunk from the start, not added on later. The Vinfast having auto lane change and park shows that tech can be added as standard without overcharging for it like Tesla. Tesla autopilot being standard is good but having auto lane change and park with stopping at red lights/stop signs standard too would make it so much better. Isn’t that the purpose of autopilot anyway, not a glorified cruise control? I wouldn’t pay for FSD, don’t see a need for it unless you’re on the road a lot. Even if I had it I’d rarely use it, I only use autopilot on road trips anyway.

One of the reasons for the really negative reviews from beyond a month ago was they only had the CITY version for the American Test reviewers. That was a scaled down lower range trim even more limited than the current base version VF8, plus it was at a time when pricing did not reflect the big price drops and battery inclusion which are current now. A vinfast rep even admitted to me that was not their best move. They should have supplied upper trim VF8's and with current market pricing it the reviews would have been far less negative at that time.

I’m not sure I agree with you. Most of the criticisms in the reviews seemed to be about software glitches that made many basic features unreliable, which would seem to be unrelated to whether it was a CITY version or not. From what I recall the only other issues consistently mentioned were the handling and suspension being poor and the back seat being uncomfortable - and I don’t know if those things are specific to the CITY or not.

@@Sashazur Yes software clunkiness was a factor, but many of those things have already been rectified with updates. The CITY version had very limited range, and the pricing at the time was almost as much as other competitors had before the price reduction wars set in. So they were doing review on completely stale market information. And the back seat has PLENTY of room Im 6 foot 2 and it was even more specious than model Y. I dont favour Vinfast over Tesla , but want to correct some out of date assumptions from those early reviews

It's nice to see new EV's being introduced in the US. However, if they want to gain decent traction they will have to adopt the NACS charging standard since it is becoming the standard in the US and Canada and they can't afford from a competitive standpoint to have that working against them since they are up against some solid competition that is adopting NACS.

VinFast makes a difference in color. Multi-angle design and more space for family trip. The interior and exterior get many compliments. They need more improvement in the future. But the first step shows the difference in branding and creating a GEN that distinguishes it from brands like BMW, MEC... more brands and more options for customers. Where VinFast manufactures, it also helps local workers get more jobs

Agree about the “bandwagon” phenomenon. Disagree about “you not being traditional car reviewers”. Are people like you spending a week driving a car less informative than those making YT videos by crashing cars (Top Gear) or comparing vinyl wraps (Donut)?? Not to pick on these 2 examples, but I use them to exemplify the point. I’d watch some other videos for entertainment, but would trust your judgement if I want to buy a product.

I would like to see your Fisker Ocean review and an other video comparing it to vf8. I've seen the vf8, vf9, vf6 and vf7 at the auto show in Montreal, they really are good looking car. My big issue with the vf8 is the hump, to me that's a no no. Nice video btw.

In North America, so many people expect a normal car with good features, bells and whistles and luxury amenities, the Vinfast vehicles offer all of that of course, and who wouldn’t want that. But it’s not very exciting though. But I wouldn’t drive anything else in the crossover class other than a Model Y because of the benefits of Tesla ownership. If my wife wanted one I’d get her one though, I wouldn’t feel different if she wanted other car other than a Tesla as long as it was all electric.

@@jean-marcfiliatrault266 Bonjour. Après deux mois. Il y a des bugs qui n'empêche pas la voiture de rouler. Il y aura une grosse mise à jour qui va diminuer de beaucoup de nombreux bugs. Mais nous aimons notre vf8 plus. Puissance, confort, bon service, bonne garantie de 10 ans etc. Nous sommes les premiers clients alors il faut vivre avec les problèmes que d'autres fabricants ont eu aussi.

I live in NC, where Vinfast was scheduled to build a manufactoring plant back in 2022, now that plan has moved to 2025, so not good news. Overall, I think EVs are still a few years away from being ready for "primetime".

One of the biggest complaints from the reviewers that I came across, were how the car drove, specifically its handling, cornering, etc., and the low quality of its screen. You didn’t directly address either of those two concerns…can you provide some insight/opinion on either concern?

Again, not a professional reviewer. Just a consumer with over a decade experience driving dozens of EVs. Don’t recall anything standing out as far as cornering or handling in the almost one week that we had the car. Felt a lot like what the Model Y as far as driving characteristics.

I don’t own an EV yet, but I always look at different reviews of every type of EV out there. Now I have seen some reviewers criticize the vast for which the only had it for a couple of hours and with you having it for a week or so, it’s like a more in-depth review. But you have to give it to Vietnam for producing a vehicle like that sometime I think people can be too critical. I mean, being critical is good, but being too critical can be bad. Also, you have to give these companies a chance to get on their feet and to come out with a car in the mid 40 $50,000 range is not bad specially, when you have some car manufactures coming out in the 80 and $90,000 range. So I applaud them fast for creating a nice styled EV. And like Anything else it improves with time.

At this time, I would wait on Vinfast until they start building their cars with an appropriate suspension for an EV. We keep our cars ten years, and I’d be concerned about expensive suspension failures over time.

I would really consider this VF8 or advanced version, if the makers build the EV ground up, without having the baggage of traditional engine model. Currently, their vehicles are good with competitive pricing and service options, but come with ICE model (legacy) baggage.
