Amazing video bud, finally someone who shows real useful items and not just zombie apocalyptic tools like they're getting ready for war hahaha I would really like to see it in the field, if you can do an overnighter with it or a simulation in a Urban/Forest environment, can be awesome! Thanks for sharing it with us, and for the links it's very helpful ♥

Great and intelligent intro. I have said for years that no one is "bugging out" to live in the woods. A family member, friend or hotel away from the danger is what 100% of people have done in America for over 100 years. With that being said, you don't need a "bug out" bag, you need a "go to" bag. The stuff in your bag should be stuff you "go to" anyway and are handy to have everyday. And remember, there are Targets, Walmarts, IHOPs, malls, gas stations, quiki-marts and fast food restaurants on the way and at your destination.

@@Nunya9876 you’re hilarious, Nunya. How many people have had legit bug outs in the US in the last decade? Is it more than a million? It’s WAY more than a million, isn’t it? Yeah? Over 100,000 people per year? There’s a single event in California that has forced over 100,000 people to evacuate with little to no notice and millions have been without power. That’s a bugout … right? You know what those people are doing? Driving an hour in any direction and the world is totally normal. How about those hawaii fires? Hurricane Helene last year? Hurricane Milton last year? No one was staying in the woods. How many people were shopping at target and Walmart and buying meals at ihop? Yeah, I’m guessing a HUGE percentage. Hey, man. Welcome to the real world.

What you have are two different bug out strategies. Car camping and backpacking. For the car camping you should have extra heavier items like a spare gas can, folding cots, hot tent, battle board map case, man pack radio, ice chest or 12volt refrigerator, folding table and chairs, tank of propane with a camp kitchen/chuck box full of canned goods. For backpacking, ultralight gear, freeze dried food, multiple ways to filter water, starlink, common caliber weapons. The third strategy you are missing is a secondary conveyance. Bicycle, skateboard, scooter, one wheel, roller skates, etc.

I think his piece of paper idea on the outside is a really good idea. You could forget to check your phone in a high stress situation. The paper will be obvious. Deed to your home. Your car’s pink slip. Photo albums … things that you cannot possibly replace or would be difficult to replace. Right? Your house burns down and those photos of your grandparents are gone forever.

In many cases a foldaway wheeled cart could make it a lot easier to carry bug out bags, water, tired kids, pets, etc. Folds away quickly to stow in a vehicle, opens up fast and easily to carry stuff if you need to start walking. Take note of the number of fire evacuees in recent days who ultimately ended up on foot, fleeing from fires.

Different types of bags though. A go back is functionally different from a get home bag. 2-3 days stuck in your car on the road with other people isn’t really a big deal. You don’t need food. You may need water. For winter in that area the most important things would be keeping warm and maybe having some water to drink. With 48 hours you can last with zero water if you’re not exerting yourself. There really isn’t much needed in that situation. I’m guessing a deck of cards would make you popular with the other stranded motorists. Mostly just warm blankets and such to deal with overnight temperatures. And those can live in your trunk. No bag needed.

I was walking the trail today with my dog. Temp -1, wind chill -15. I met a guy coming into town. He said he was walking to Oregon. He had a rolling duffel bag slung over his shoulder, multiple layers on, and was wearing sandals. The guy looked late 50-s to early 70's. Stringy and tough. We wanted to know where he could get a meal and warm up, he had four bucks on him. I don't know where he spent last night or will spend tonight, but 4 bucks at a restaurant is not enough to keekp a guy warm in this weather.

Oh. There is almost no overlap between people who do the “prepper” thing and people who … go outside and live in the woods on their own for a week while walking up a mountain. Most of the prepper community is fixated on fantasy not reality. Most of them just spend money and buy things but don’t learn how to actually use things. Or have the ability to walk 10 miles with the gear they put together. People who think they need 3 ways to filter water in a 72 hour period because “2 is 1 and 1 is none”.

Have you thought about a high viz contractors vest to use as a rain cover over your pack. great for walking on the road at night it would also cover the axe. You may not want the axe for self defence but someone else may want it for offence. Sure you could use that gadget that goes bang but you may not have to use it if Rambo didn`t try steeling the axe. We also have the Grayl but just for redundancy (one is none, two is one), we have the LifeSmart water bottle that combines a robust water purifying straw with a one-liter water bottle. Used in third-world nations, you can basically drink from any water source immediately. I'd boil all SHTF water first then use the LifeSmart and they also make a stainless steel version for that purpose. Bought one for each of our kits. We also have the six-gallon water containers.

Just found your channel and after seeing this I have a few suggestions and comments. I liked a few of the items you have here, such as the Fenix headlamp, although there are lighter, better ones in Fenix’s line that not only have most of what you have on yours but also can be detached and used as a handheld flashlight. (HM 50, 23, & 71R). I also like the Dark Energy battery bank and will probably get those even though they are pricey. (Apparently lasts many years of constant charges according to their site). I also appreciate the water jug and Anker power charger for the vehicle. However the axe is a bit much for me IN the bag, especially when there is a lighter alternative to use for wood processing such as a folding saw. (Although the axe I realize has multi tools/functions, it is best saved for vehicle carry). Also a saw is more easily packed away so no one will see it from outside your pack. However if your goal is to go to a hotel, relatives/friends house then that is not necessary. A breaching tool may be a better option if your situation requires you to shelter in a building/home if there is a major societal/economic breakdown. And a fire is nice to be able to make if you can, (wood not wet) and it does not risk you being seen by the wrong element. If you are going to a hotel, neighbor’s/relative’s/friends home this again is not likely needed unless you live farther than a day’s walking distance from your destination and somehow run out of stove fuel. The flashlight and knife are also good choices, (fixed blades are best and AA or rechargeable is spot on). For the med kit I would get a smaller bag that fits everything you need but is less obtrusive/visible , say black in color so there is no contrast. (Helps for NOT being seen if you need to ghost).
@Xeno-M.
@Xeno-M. 2 ай бұрын
P.S. The Swagman is a good option although it is not durably waterproof as a rain poncho for heavy/prolonged rain. I would pair that with their poncho, ( as I believe you were showing, or a tarp). For the mylar “Emergency Blanket” I would get either a brand that is better made/less noisy/more camo’d than what you have there, or simply Skip it. I would NOT rely on it as a shelter. There are three problems with those, namely they Suck as a shelter due to Condensation buildup (so you get nice and Wet in the am), they are Not durable, (Most fall apart only after 1-2 uses), and they are VERY Visible/Reflective AND Noisy, so if you think you are not going to be seen/heard in your ideal hiding spot for the night, Think Again.
@Xeno-M.
@Xeno-M. 2 ай бұрын
P.S. I also liked the Swagman, although alone it is not durably waterproof for heavy/prolonged rain, so I would still bring the tarp/ Helikon poncho to pair with it. As far as the “Emergency Blanket” goes, I would get a better made, more camo’d one, (Don’t Die in the Woods) or skip it altogether. They are good for keeping warm initially, but there are several downsides to these, namely 3. First, they Suck as a shelter due to terrible Condensation buildup, ( So you wake up nice and wet in the am ). Second most of these are Not very Durable, as they only last about 1-3 uses before ripping apart. (Although the better ones last longer). And third, these blankets are Highly Visible and Noisy, being highly reflective off of Any light source (with exceptions), and All have a moderate to loud noise that can be heard from distances, so that perfect hiding spot will be Hidden NO More. If you simply need an emergency, temporary warming blanket and have no need to hide or care if it sounds/looks like you climbed into a giant Doritos bag that rips apart after a use or 2, Go for it.

I mean, he very literally suggested a bag in the video. Just a suggestion for you, man: Go the fantasy route, embrace it, but do it with your eyes open. Or, be realistic. No one does both. Over 100,000 people ACTUALLY bug out of their homes every single year in this country. Real world. None of them are sleeping outside and need water filtration or fire starters or whatever. Yeah? There are fires in LA right this second and over 100,000 people evacuated their homes with little to no notice. What do you think those people actually wished they had for the 72 hours after they left their homes? What about the 100,000+ people who were impacted by hurricane Helene last year? How many of them wanted paracord and a fire starter? What about the people in Hawaii who had to flee before their homes burned down? Think those folks needed to filter water to drink, or needed tourniquets or chest seals?

Most people who bug out don’t do any real walking. MOST people who bug out could use a cardboard box. It’s just a container that moves things from your home to the car, then from your car to … a friend’s house or a hotel or Airbnb. His pack would pretty heavy and uncomfortable. If you’re concerned with weight and carrying a pack a long distance look at what backpackers carry. Preppers are mostly about the fantasy. If you’re concerned with actually wanting a pack that you can hike a long distance with a stay outside for a couple days while hiking between stops … you’re backpacking, not bugging out. TONS of content on KZbin for that topic. It’s a lot of fun! And if you want to go light there are ultra light backpackers. Also super long distance backpackers. People who live outside for many weeks or even MONTHS at a time. Some people cover thousands of miles. ZERO of them bring saws or axes or paracord bracelets or tourniquets or chest seals.

@@zero11010 Im not a prepper or anything but I know a lot about backpacks and living out of them, having done multiweek unsupported hikes and many extended patrols in the military, and more recently some mountaineering which I consider pretty much the gold standard for balancing functionality and weight. @@driver3899 there are PLENTY of gear breakdowns for people who do backpacking. They weigh every single item. They talk about the weight of packs. And the weight of specific items. They count ounces and grams. I think you’ll find basically everything you want in that community. In my VERY much not expert opinion, I don’t think you want to start with ultralight setups. You’ll find people who do things like … use a car’s folding Mylar windshield screen as a sleeping pad for weight savings and stuff. Some things that can be pretty miserable. It sounds like you have the right frame of mind! It seems like the best way to start is by allowing things to be a little heavier than they may need to be, and with use and practice let yourself experiment and cut weight over time. It’s mostly sacrificing comfort for lightness and finding the right balance. And it tends to be REALLY expensive to get lighter versions of things. Lots of horror stories where people leave something behind then realize it’s hard to sleep without the one item, or they’re less prepared for … rain/bugs/whatever.

Try to be a bit more realistic with your contents. In Florida have you ACTUALLY needed to evacuate from hurricanes in the last 10 years? It’s pretty common in some parts of the state, right? What happens when people evacuate? What do people need? You know what no one needs? A system to sleep outside. Fire starters. Water filters. A camping stove. A fixed blade knife. A small axe. A silly emergency bracelet with paracord and a fire starter. A compass … on and on. You know what people DID need? A couple days worth of clothing. A toothbrush and toothpaste. Some snacks. Cables for their phone. Some snacks to eat in the car or the next day. Yeah? Stick to the real world and avoid fantasy stuff. There’s over 100,000 people who had to evacuate their homes in LA RIGHT NOW …. What percentage of those people would use each of these items? If this pack was handed to every single person 100% free. I would hazard a guess that as the fires continue on 01-13-2025 less than 1,000 people had anything that even resembled a go bag. And the fires certainly put the end to the bug-in kit. The best kit should be called "the it is over" bag TEOTWAWK and it should weigh about 14-16# with enough stuff for one person. When is the last time you carried 20# of anything over 100 yards? Married couple with two children, everyone can carry something. And you need at least two sets... one at house and one in vehicle. We, in America, have not idea of what disaster really is except when the hurricane or tornado hits. Go find a photo of the refugees in Europe in late 1944, early 1945. No one was carrying anything to help down at the office or over by their cousins house. Think this through. Suppose you get up tomorrow and you are living in a place that resembles North Carolina after the storms. What do you need if you cannot get water for 7 days? Or if there is no medicine delivery. Please, prepare for horror, not inconvenience! You are 25.5 miles from your house at work and now on foot at your job. And so is everyone else you work with. What do you need for that? You cannot carry everything you MIGHT need ...

Solar panels are basically trash. Check out some content on them. To be used you basically have to be stationary, and you also need to rotate the panel to follow the sun across the sky at a 90 degree angle. Check the kind of panel you’re thinking about bringing. See how long it would take to recharge a typical phone battery … say 5000mah. Now think about the weight. Now, think about bringing a 20,000 mah battery. It’s enough to charge your phone from dead to full more than once a day every day for the 72 hours you want a bag like this to last. For more than about a decade battery is the solution unless you’re going to be gone for more than a week. Also … basically 100% of people end up at a friend’s house, or hotel, or a shelter. If the power is out you have your batter backup. But, you may now be far enough away that power is fine. Also the two biggest REAL WORLD causes for people to leave their home in an emergency are …. fires and hurricanes. Both of those things darken the sky for days. So, if you want to go fantasy … what you want is more like a biolight stove which would still generate electricity during a hurricane or while smoke covers the sky. But … battery is the way to go.

Accurate, but harsh. The contents of his bag are 95% in line with what others have. He’s got LESS of the fantasy stuff though. Like, he doesn’t have a fishing kit and a snare kit and two fixed blade knives “because 2 is 1 and 1 is none.” His bag IS more realistic than most you see here.

Bugging out. From what? We all make believe that what we mean is something local and we just need to get 50 miles away to our brothers house. But the unsaid (because it makes us look like tinfoil hat nuts ) is nuclear attack. We would need to get away from people, away from fallout and targets. How long? weeks, months, until we die. And right there is the fault with every bug out bag on the internet. I don't want a blanket I want the military sleep system. I don't want snack I want a lot of high calorie food. I want a .22 rifle with at least 500 rounds. I want a preplanned place to go and a cache.

@@bloochoo2870 Because it's practically a meme, there's certain items that as soon as you see them you know this persons recommendations are worthless. The people who put those types of items in their kit only did so because they saw it in another video or in a cheap ready made "disaster" kit. A folding saw and a 4 - 6 inch fixed blade are both more efficient at processing logs and it's lighter and safer than swinging around a goofy ass hatchet like that. Plus look at all the gear, it's all brand shiny new. None of it has been used or even tested. It's all just a bunch of gear that has been given to him for free in exchange for a positive review. The finish on the shovel should be all worn off and scratched, the fixed blade has never seen anything more than some paracord, and the same thing for the multi-tool, the metal cup part of his water bottle has never seen a fire or had water boiled in it. I mean I could go on and on.

Interesting. The idea of having a practical realistic go bag is a great idea. But It seems you keep balancing between « I go to hotel/friends » and « I sleep outside ». I know, we all have nice gears that we would like to bring with us even if not realistically needed 😊From my experience in traveling to hotel/friends I need a soap, a toothbrush, a silk bed sheet, a mérinos wool shawl, a legging, a warm tee-shirt, a medium towel, 2 platypus to be filled with warm water in case I’m cold, a some clothes and CASH (specially if some kind of emergency). As a general idea your pack need to be as light and small as possible, no huge matches container when a small BIC will do the trick, better add some flame extender in case the wood is wet. The lifestraw is lighter than the Grayl etc. Maybe you can create 2 packs, one for friends/hotel/car stay and another, a supplement pack if you will, with « I live outside » products ? So depending on the situation and if you have to walk, then you can ditch the unneeded pack ? Anyway you have fuel my thoughts about it so thank you for that.
