I am a new plant parent and basically first plant I bought (right after unrooted monstera adansonii), was calathea zebrina 😊. I watched plenty videos beforehand so I was aware about this drama queen's tantrums however, I have accepted the challenge. She looks too good to pass her by. I got her for just over 2 weeks now and she still looks pretty much the same amazing as she arrived. However, today, I cut off one leaf from the centre as it started to be more yellow than green and looked like it got chicken pox or something like that. Hope she is not getting sick 😁

Oh my. I thought I was doing it wrong. "Thank you" for making me feel better about my failure. Huge relief to hear even pro's like yourself stumbled upon issues with calathea. As of now, I stopped buying calathea and turned to anthurium, which in my opinion are easier to care 🌿🌱💚

I ordered a red maranta from a nursery not far from me in QLD and it arrived with spider mite, which in turn killed my beautiful Makoyana as well as my precious Alocasia Polly. All lived on the end of our dining table away from the rest of my houseplants so they were saved. Unrelated, my rattlesnake plant lived in a corner of my bedroom and gave me such joy when it showed the purple underside of leaves when she closed them at night. Then out of the blue the leaves died from the stem outward to leaf tips, I’ve never seen such strange behaviour on any plant so I chopped all but about 3 leaves and put it outside to recover.

I think the only calathea I still have is Freddy which just lives outside in the greenhouse out of sight and seems ok at the moment as it’s pushing out new leaves. I’m tempted to take it out of the greenhouse and have it on display to appreciate it but thinking I might kill it that way….. 😂

I hear you Nora!!!! I love Calatheas, but yes I have struggled with many for years. I have only recently transferred mine all to Leca and they are doing better in this medium than soil. Some Calatheas thrive more than others. I think some Calatheas, like the Thai Beauty, would do best in places like Queensland. Temperature can be a big factor for these drama Queens!!!! Loved this video.

Calatheas are awesome! I suggest: treat them like a 'fern'. Never, ever let them get dry and they will be gorgeous. I'm doing semi-hydro. I suggest peat moss and some tree fern fibre mixed with perlite. - Yeah, your examples are hardier thick glossy leaves. I'm shocked your orbifolio is in leca, wow!

I finally got orbifolia! It's been elusive locally and expensive online but i got two starter pots for 4 dollars last week. I put them together in a chunky mix and self-watering and they're both putting out their first leaves for me! The leaves they had all had crispy on them but the roots looked good and i saw potential and figured if i failed it's 4 dollars instead of 30. I may have told them that their Aunt Nora from Australia wanted me to have them and for them to be big and strong 😬 I have 13 prayer plants right now (2 medallion). I'm hoping they'll pray for each other and all do well 🫣 I think my favorite thing about them is looking at them and seeing the little round roll of new leaves poking up like a little "hello? Can i grow here?" Hehe i also love when they move and they catch on a leaf or wall etc and then they are suddenly bouncing. I do have the white fusion on my list but only if i find it for a very good price like all the others (15 or less) bc I'm sick of buying plants just to own a an empty nursery pot. I told my mom I'm considering buying leca for a few of my plants like my hoya. She asked me what leca was. I told her "Clay marbles the cat will find at 2am" 🤣

They really do well with natural, but indirect, bright light. Mine are in a northwestern exposure, I live in California though. So mine are outside under a patio structure. It seems as if north facing would be full shade, but no, all the sunlight is heavily reflected off of the white-painted house and the windows, and the pavement. So I think that bright, indirect or reflective light suits them ideally. Same with other genera like Peperomia, ferns, and most aroids, too.

I don't have a calathea, and I never have had one, But I've been thinking about buying a Calathea yellow fusion for a while now. I know it seems like a bit of a jump into calatheas, but I'm just delusional in general, so I feel like I could probably take care of one (because I do well with pretty much every consistently moist plant). If not, I'll just place it in a vase and grow it aquaponically. 🤷‍♂
@erikm8372
@erikm8372 2 ай бұрын
Just make sure it’s distilled water or reverse osmosis only. At the least, spring water is okay too. They need some natural minerals which are likely to be in spring or filtered water, it’s just the fluoride and chlorine that seem to be problematic in municipal water. Aquaponics may work, but watch them become divas, as if it’s “not enough” aeration all of a sudden 🤣

Most of my calatheas are fine except that calathea rattlesnake. It is the one that doesn't like where it's more humid in the house. It doesn't like it where the others love the gentle light from the kitchen window. So I finally just put it among my other plants and said live or die. It's the one that is not satisfied with anything. The others are gorgeous since I started using water conditioner. Even my medallion

The delusion might just be real… I made a list of past plants, and not just Calatheas, that I’ve killed or that have died, that I want to eventually buy again. Because now I’m believing I can actually “crack the code”. Dare I even say those words out loud…I’ll jinx myself probably. Lol. But really, I’m proud to say I currently have some pretty easy ones going strong, the _Ctenanthes_ Burle Marx, _setosa_ 'Grey Star' & lubbersiana, _Stromanthe sanguinea_ (not the 'triostar'), and my biggest surprise, the not-so-easy _Geoppoertia ornata_ or pinstripe calathea. One of the biggest divas ever. Somehow seems to like full shade, northwest facing, outdoors in Southern California, with NOTHING but distilled water. I barely even feed the thing because I don’t want to scare it to death with SALTS… Lord. 😂

Oh yes! My other big surprise is my red _Maranta leuconeura_ that I’ve had outdoors, same conditions as the others, for over a year. Shocking. Even more shocking is the cutting I took from it, also over a year ago, that rooted in water and has gone on to thrive in Pon. I surprised myself.
