Thanks for sharing! I'm a rising junior in college, and I'm seriously thinking about going into teaching. I'm almost done with my bachelor's in journalism (with minors in political science and educational studies), and I'm looking at getting my certification through a master's program. My family seems to think it's a silly idea to want to teach, but seeing people like you who who love what they do and love working with kids hits home with me. I had a great education, and I believe that every child has the right to what I had. Thanks so much for sharing your life with me (and everyone else!). From classroom management to makeup hauls, I love seeing your joy and passion, if only through a computer screen.

Thank you for making this video! I never even knew this process really existed! I knew some, but certainly not all of it. I'm about to be a junior in high school and am aspiring to be a high school English teacher. I was wondering if when it comes to the content of what you teach if there was any leeway, for lack of a better word? Like if you can choose a book to teach or if all the books you teach would come from a predetermined list. That's just one of the things I've always been a little curious about, but have never been comfortable enough with any of my teachers to hound them with a bunch of questions about becoming a teacher in between classes, haha. Anyways, this comment is becoming a mini essay, thank you again for making this video!

I applied to the credential program at CSUF last semester and the lady that interviewed me basically told me that it was to make sure that we spoke English well. She asked questions like "Why do you want to teach?" & she had us (it was a group interview) bring three primary sources that we would use in class for a lesson. Just wanted to share!

I agree that classroom management is the hardest. You can read books , take a class or training and get advice from everyone, but you just have to learn most through experience because everyone has a different method and every school may have different rules or expectations for how their teachers manage students. Plus it's one thing to read about dealing with an argumentative student and another thing actually being in that situation and having to respond calmly when you feel disrespected.
@nikkialynn93028 жыл бұрын
Well some school districts offer credential programs that are free and they pay you while you teach. Or some, if you are working as a T.A will offer assistance to help you become a teacher for that school district. They might provide stipends for school books or testing reimbursement. I live in Los Angeles and will be transferring to Cal state l.a. to complete my degree in early childhood education. I'm working towards becoming an Elementary school teacher.

If you do the research, yes California pays well compared to most other states but the rate you pay in taxes/cost of living more than makes up for that in comparison to other areas that may pay almost as well, but are significantly lower in stated expenditures. California also has much more congested classrooms compared to many other states as well, something to bear in mind.

In South Carolina, you aren't allowed to sub while you're student teaching. So even though I was the one teaching every time there was a sub in my master teacher's room (which was a lot, because my master teacher was pregnant and ended up having her baby a week before her long-term sub could come in), they got paid and I was paying to do it! We had to do 6 weeks of continuous teaching (all classes every day), and we were gradually put into teaching each class - I started with 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, and then dropped 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th after the six full weeks - so by the time she had her baby I was done with my teaching hours and was supposed to just work on wrapping up my paperwork and helping out but ended up teaching full time for an additional week!
@emilylauren93768 жыл бұрын
Also, I totally agree with you about the lack of preparation in credential programs for classroom management! I'm finishing up my 2nd year teaching (and my final year with my Initial Certificate, as I'll be receiving my Professional Certificate at the end of the school year!!), and that's still where I struggle. I've made changes each semester, and I'm continuing to make changes for next year as I try to figure out what works for me. Being young (and looking like it - I often have parents think I'm a middle school student!) definitely makes this harder as well!

+Leila Francisco Yes, my program was about a year, I go into more detail in the video. The 2 years of clearing your credential are while you are actually working and getting paid (see my BTSA video for more about that). If you are in CA, they will not take experience from another state or another country, you will have to do everything in CA, so just watch out for that. But I think teaching in Malaysia would be a priceless opportunity!

Thanks for this video. I had a similar undergrad experience and am now starting an MAT program. Did you ever think of doing Teach for America?
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog9 жыл бұрын
About That Grad Life Love your username :) Yeah, a few of my friends did Teach for America and some loved it, some didn't. I thought about it, but since I was in a Masters program and my husband already had a teaching job, I wasn't able to be flexible about where I lived. It's a cool program though!

how many times did you retake the csets? and did your program require csets before being accepted into the credential program
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog7 жыл бұрын
Rudy Bravo I just took them once, but I think I split the History one into two days. But yes, my program required the csets to be completed before applying.

hey, can you tell me more about you getting credentialed in social science, then taking the cset in english. so now you credentialed with both, social science and in english you can teach both? is that how that works? I am starting a credential program, alder graduate school, soon. i work with special education as an instructional aide. when i sign up for the program, it is asking me to pick a field of study: single subject math, single subject english, special education, multiple subject. if i get a credential in special education and i take a cset multiple subject, can i teach k-5 and special education? is that how that works? thanks so much. i hope you get back to me on time

Any book recommendations for the CSET for history?
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog9 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Zaragoza There's a yellow one that I got on Amazon, but a friend is borrowing it so I can't remember the exact title. I don't think there are too many out there though, so any yellow one on Amazon might be it!

Do you recommend any resources for studying? I have been very close (few points away) from passing Subset 1 and 2. I already passed the third (yay!) Thank you for this video!

Hey! Im hoping to take the CSET for Multiple Subject soon. I'm very worried about what the best way to go about studying for the CSET is. I am in a very tight budget and hoping to study from material that will be very specific on what will be on the exam. any suggestions? thanks!
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog7 жыл бұрын
Mariela Cisneros Hi! I've never taken the multiple subject test (I did single subject). Sorry! But most people I know did take at least section more than once, so that's always an option. Such a bummer that it costs so much though!

Hi, I love this video. I'm a second career guy with a passion for education. I want to do a single subject and a subject that is applicable to a JD, MBA since I have both. I have been teaching at for profit schools and tutoring at sylvan learning center, private tutor centers and am starting the Youth Policy Institute in January etc for five years. I also work with volunteer coaching and Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts etc. I just want a 9 to 5 teaching job and I'm going to call LAUSD tomorrow but can I get an emergency credential with My education before I enter my credential program at Cal state LA?
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog9 жыл бұрын
+Rafael S It sounds like you would want to get a Social Science credential. You would be an amazing Civics/Econ teacher for 12th graders! An emergency credential still has to go through the CTC, and that would have to be facilitated through CSULA, so I would figure out the deal with CSULA first. Then I would go on EdJoin.org and see if there are any Social Science positions open in LAUSD. At this time of the year there usually aren't a lot of jobs open, but you should definitely check just in case!

Thank you for your advice. I spoke to CSLA today and they gave me some sage advice regarding the Social science credential and advice on substituting to get my foot in the door. Its all a bit complicated but I'll start getting all my ducks in a row. Thanks again, Rafael

hello, your video was very helpful. I am taking to cbest to sub as a teacher, i am currently a paraeduactor. i would love to teach PE middle school level. Elk grove is in need of teachers so I think i will be okay obtaining a job. luckily my paraeducator will be active and i will always be employed for special ed. My question is with the CSET, we only need to take the portions that we want to credential in, correct?
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog8 жыл бұрын
Hi Renee! Yes, you will only need to take the PE CSET, but it contains multiple parts (I think 3), and it is HARD! It takes most people multiple tries, so just leave yourself plenty of time to get it done. Best of luck though, hopefully you'll just ace it right away!
