My Bodyguard Career by John P. Painter
This is a short video covering my transition from a student of a former Chinese bodyguard and soldier, to an entertainer and then back to my martial arts roots when one dark rainy evening I was forced to used the Li family skills of Baguazhang to protect a wealthy Dallas socialite from being killed by four thugs hired by a local capocrimine in charge of the DFW mob. Instead of attempting retribution the Boss was so impressed with how I bested his “boys” that he hired me to teach them and be his bodyguard. In those days I was very young and my employer had not yet moved into prostitution or drugs as part of the business. So being an enforcer and debt collector was not a problem for me.
As the owner of a number of Dallas night clubs he also put me to work performing my escapes and magic which saw bookings across the united states on the nightclub circuit. So yes, I worked for the “famiglia” or “boss mafioso” for about five years until they moved from numbers running and vending machine business into more nefarious operations which I did not wish to be a part of. He went to prison and I went back to working as an actor and performer plus teaching and training Chinese internal martial arts.
A few years later a student and I opened the first ever Kung Fu School in Arlington Texas. A number of my students were police officers which after one was killed in a domestic gone bad, eventually lead into starting the American Rangers Law Enforcement Training Institute with a number of retired officers and rangers. This company taught hand to hand defensive tactics and Action Response Pistol Craft to trainers for Police, Corrections and a number of other LEO organizations. All of these methods were based on methods designed specifically for police training called PKC. Every department that has graduated from the training has seen excessive violence complaints drop dramatically in their jurisdictions.
It’s been a long and winding road for my career and it is not over yet. Today we have the University of Baguazhang Online offering total training in not only the martial methods but also all of the often neglected teachings of a Chinese internal martial art.
