My Cat HATES my New Kitten - Help? How to Introduce Cats!

Kitten School

Күн бұрын

Here at Kitten School, the happiest days are when my foster kitties get picked up to go off to their forever homes. Often the adopting family already has a cat, or cats, at home...so I try to prepare them on how to introduce the new kitty to lessen any drama. But cats are highly territorial and when a new cat suddenly appears in their home it can cause confusion and chaos. A cat who has always been relaxed and mellow can suddenly turn into a growling, hissing beast who lashes out at the newcomer, and even at his beloved owner! The new cat is often terrified - it is not only in a brand new place, but there's another cat who clearly does not want it to be there! This can all be very emotional for everyone involved, and sometimes it can seem that the existing cat will NEVER accept the new cat. Well, as someone who has experienced many years of introducing new cats to my home, I can give you some tips on how to make this process easier. You first have to understand that most cats will act hostile (or scared) of a new cat or kitten. This is normal! It just takes time for the cats to get to know one another...sometimes this can be a few days, other times it can be a few weeks. You want to introduce your cats SLOWLY, and always monitor the situation to prevent any serious fights or attacks. Hissing, growling, swatting - this is probably going to happen. Be patient and calm. NEVER yell at or hit a cat who is acting out- it won't help and will make things worse! You just have to be calm, encourage the cats to play and eat together, separate them if there's aggression, and BE PATIENT. The cats will need to first get used to each other, and then establish their social order in the household. But they usually DO work it out. And sometimes, even the hissiest, swattiest of "enemies" can eventually become the very best of cat friends!
Here's a few things you can get to help ease the transition when introducing a new cat. I have used them all and they have often made a difference:
Feliway - This plug-in diffuser mimics natural feline pheromones that the cats can smell and is calming to many cats. We have used this here at Kitten School for years and I think it has helped keep the peace with my resident cats, who sometimes resent the "intrusion" of foster kitties on their territory. The scent is not noticeable to humans and you just plug it in the wall, where it will waft the calming pheromones into the air. Might take a week or so to notice a difference, but many multi-cat owners swear by it!
Bach Rescue Remedy for Pets - This homeopathic herbal calming formula has been used to help people relax for ages and is now available in a pet formula safe for cats. A few drops in your cat's food or water can help calm him or her in stressful times, such as a trip to the vet, moving, or the introduction of a new kitty into the house

We try to keep them separated as much as we can, but due to work sometimes they have to be in the same room for a couple of hours. No fights though thankfully. We make sure we give our grumpy cat lots of love and attention and positive association and she's always happy at the end of the day.

I thought I'd do another update: Both cats are comfortable around her! The grumpy one from before is only grumpy when she gets tackled, but neither of them will hurt her. We leave the 3 of them alone while we are at work and we have a camera up to watch them and the two play together all the time while the grumpy one just chills, but she's visibly relaxed. Just don't wanna play. My kitten is about 15-16 weeks old now with all her shots now and is going to get spayed once it's time and hopefully once she gets spayed she will be a tiny bit more calm so the grumpy cat doesn't have to worry about random pouncings on her while she's sleeping 😂

It's so nice to hear everything worked out so well! I've taken in stray cats for 20 years. Right now I have 4 cats. 3 males, ages 2, 7 and 10 and a very recent addition, a female kitten I named Violet. I heard Violet crying under a bush. She was scared, hungry and cold. The vet gave me instructions for Violet's care, but she advised me that Violet may not survive. However... my little girl made it! I would've been thrilled just to see her survive, but Violet took it up like 10 notches beyond basic survival. That little mama has THRIVED! Violet weighed just 0.3 pounds was so weak she couldn't lift her head, let alone stand up. 4 months later and Violet is a happy, healthy, energetic, fearless kitty. She's intensely curious and has come so far physically! In under 4 months, my girl went from too weak to lift her head to a 3am zoomie machine! Lol, the best part is that I never had to implement any of my plans to get my 3 adult boys to accept, nor my plans for helping Violet to not be scared of her big brother cats. Violet, and this is absolutely not an exaggeration, literally RUNS THE SHOW among her siblings. I don't know how she does this, but when it's time to eat Violet has gotten the 3 older male cats to wait until she decides which plate of food is going to be hers! They actually sit back and wait for her to select her plate and begin eating before any of those three guys even APPROACH their food! Then if Violet finishes her meal and feels like doing this, she will go over to one of my male cats and nudge them and no freaking joke, the male cat will walk away and Violet will eat some of his food! She also runs the playtime dynamic among the 4 cats. If one of her brothers approaches her to play, she usually plays with him. But if another cat tries to initiate playtime and she's not in the mood she let's him know immediately that he better back the eff up and leave her alone! Then the times when Violet will initiate play, the male almost always obliges. I can't tell if it's a welcome suggestion to the male cat and he truly does want to play with her, or if he just goes along with it because somehow she has declared herself queen of this little feline family and - no clue how - my 3 male cats OBEY HER COMMANDS! So basically she decided she was the boss, told them she was the boss, and they, all 3 of them, were just like "Okay, Boss!" OMG it's so funny!

Patience is the key and not to rush it.. My male cat was horrified when we brought in another male.. Of course we kept them separated initially but the few times they did see each other they would scream and yell.. And on the odd occasion had a couple of punch ups.. It took about 4 months of feeding them in separate spaces but also able to see each other.. And later having them both on leash during little introductions.. Its also best not to leave them Alone together even after they seem reasonably friendly.. Now they absolutely adore each other and quite frankly even ignore us😀

He is probably as big as her now and yes, he does attack her back sometimes but fortunately never is real aggression, I mean the one meant to hurt. I have identified it as territorial spats, lots of swatting and hissing but no real damage. They have period of calm, everything seem to be ok between them and then all the sudden they are at it. I really hope this will go away one day. The older seems less defensive now but it has been very slow progress.

Hi Katie! It's common for bigger cats to play rough with new kittens. I would allow them to play while you are watching. If the kitten keeps trying to get away, or cries out/hisses and seems genuinely scared I would separate them. Like kids sometimes playtime can get out of hand and everyone will need a "time out". When the kitten gets bigger things should be on a more even playing field!

My older cat does this to my one year old cat as we are introducing the new kitten. Then I give my older cat treats and attention all the time in front of the door of kitty base camp. I'm at 5 wks, so don't feel bad, but what i'm doing is working. My older gett is growling and hissing lots less. And my 1 year old cat and kitty still get individual play sessions so their relationship can keep growing. Just don't worry if it takes a few mths. My older cat (8yrs) just really, really needs time! Good luck, I just noticed your comment was 5 mths, I hope it's going well!

I noticed my dominant cat would generally put on a show by hissing and such, but he never growled or had any body language other than defensive-aggressiveness. My new cat is very, very tolerant and well mannered, so be never reacted to the aggression. I started letting my new cat out during the day and then putting them in his safe room at night. That way I could supervise their interactions and be aware if anything happened between them. After a while, I stopped putting him in my room at night because they didn't have any violent interactions. The two cats still don't really get along but they tolerate eachother a lot better. My dominant cat was poorly socialized since he was an orphaned kitten, so I don't think he'll ever be friendly with my newest cat. Nowadays, I try to minimize negative interactions. I paid attention to exactly when my dominant cat would hiss and I tried to remedy the areas. For instance, my dominant cat would hiss at my new cat while looking outside an open window, so I now keep two windows open so they don't have to compete. Overall, they can coexist just fine. They're not friends, but it's pretty peaceful.

Oh wow I am SOOO glad I happened upon your video!! I’m only on day 2 of introducing my 18 month old cat to a new kitten and I thought all was lost. My cat is not responding well at all. When he first saw the kitten he was very vocal with his opinion. And it wasn’t in a good way. I thought I was being a bad mother by putting the kitty in the garage for a while but I think I’m going to have to give it a go when my cat comes in so he can see the house is still “his”. I think I’ve been too unreal with my expectations and should slow down the pace they interact for now. I honestly thought I would have to take the new kitty back so I thank you for giving me hope! Any other advice would be appreciated. Lynda

Marie L YES! Thank God. It took a month, but my cat is “more cool” with them now, not perfect but he has admitted the truth and has calmed a lot. I kept them in a separate room for week 1 and my Cat never saw them but he knew they were in there. He hissed at the door and isolated himself and didn’t eat much - totally stressed out. On Week 2 I would bring the kittens out for a little bit so my cat could see them everyday (not a long time), he basically hated them. Around week 3 I would swap rooms for a little while, put big cat in kittens room, put kittens in outside area where cat dwells, and then let them be in same room periodically for more time; my cat started to ease up. Week 4 I just opened the rooms up for them both to travel around, and my cat has conformed more, only very few times my cat would hiss but the kittens don’t care about him they just play and explore the house. They sorta respect him and then disrespect him and so I think my cat has surrendered. Basically, take it slow, follow your gut. I’m thankful for the advice in the video, I didn’t do everything but I did take it slow and it was needed for my Cat to admit the truth of the new development and share his territory. Onwards.

Right now we have 5 happy cats in the house. It's more than we planned on, but things happen. :-) Perhaps we have incredible luck or have always, somehow, had mellow cats find their way to us. In 40 years of cat ownership we've never had a problem introducing a new cat to the residents, whether it be a kitten or an adult. We turn the new cat loose and let them get acquainted. Of course, all cat activity is supervised until we're sure the coast is clear. It's always been a matter of hours, not days. Last November we took in a stray that had been hanging around the house all summer. I was amazed at how quickly the cats acclimated; no hostility at all. For those of you not as fortunate, this video should be invaluable. As stated, never give up. Patience, scent, communal feeding, plenty of attention to the residents, and supervision are keys to success!

I have a 1.5-year-old female and a 3-month-old female kitten struggling to get along. The older one had been introduced to another -temporary- male cat when she was younger, and she accepted him at day 3, being her the dominant (so I thought she was a pretty social host). When I brought the little kitten I expected a similar outcome, but I was wrong. After some growling and hissing, she appeared to accept the kitten also at day 3 or 4, even letting her sleep by her and lick each other. But somehow this changed overnight, and she's been HATING the kitten for a month now. The kitten is playful and doesn't seem intimidated, but my 1.5-year-old queen has stopped playing altogether, avoids contact, and I fear she's very depressed. Help

Hi Kelci, I think some occasional hissing is ok. There will probably have to be some hissing and even a swat or too before the cats really get to know each other. Unless there is serious fighting go on, or one cat is attacking the other (beyond a swat or hiss), I would let them interact more when you are there to supervise. If you keep them separated for too long then they won't get the chance to meet, work out their social hierarchy order, and learn to live together. It isn't easy at first but I think it can work out if you're patient and allow the cats to adjust on their own terms. Good luck!

Thanks for your tips. We’ve successfully introduced two cats previously - a sweet and docile senior boy and a curious but shy girl kitten. It was so easy and quick. While never becoming best friends, they enjoyed each other’s presence and would sit near each other on the couch or explore happenings in the home together. We lost our 20 year old boy this past Thanksgiving. We are now working towards introducing our new 10 month old boy to our existing (now 6 year old) girl cat. She’s grown even more anxious, timid and shy as she ages but we can tell she’s lonely being the sole cat of house currently. Our new boy is very sweet and playful so we’re hopeful that some of that energy wears off on her. We’re going to start the introduction process in the next week or so and videos like these are incredibly helpful in knowing what are good signs vs bad (especially in regards to the hissing - our girl loves to make her feelings known by hissing when she’s upset). Thanks again and please send us any good luck you’ve got!

@@1940limited Hi G, yeah, for years I never had a problem with multiple cats. Then I sort of had a problem when I brought in Betty, the Super Alpha from my Feral Cat Feeding Station. Betty was sort of special, with a foot in both Worlds. I first saw her as a kitten eating out of a dish in front of a door. So, she was a little bit Hand Socialized at the right age for it. but when her People moved and left her behind, she came charging into the Feeding Station and took over. She looked like she had Brit Short Hair Blood and those things are built like bull terriers. But some kids got BB guns for Christmas and turned the Territory into Fields of Death. So I brought Betty inside. I loved her, but she did corner out all the other cat's Them To Me Quality times. After just a few years, Betty was still young, she dropped over dead.... I guess it was a BB or a Pellet she had been shot with that finally cut into something important. Then, wow, to see how the other cats re-positioned. Yeah, whenever somebody dies in a Multicat Household, it is like Musical Chairs. You know, it might break your heart when some favorite Snuggle Bug dies, but then, you'll be surprised when another cat just steps into that role. "My Turn". But every once in a while there can be Real Problems and drama. Like Caroline says, we're always able to ride it out.

Help please I just recently got a new Kitten because I felt like my cat is lonely I understand it is normal for cat to hiss at each other and my cat is hissing at my new kitten but I can’t find any information on whether or not it is normal for my cat to hiss at me as whenever I try to touch my cat she hisses at me note that this is the first time she is hissing at me.

We got our new kitten twenty months ago. I can only say it's been hell and I've shed copious tears. Our older cat has sprayed every surface in the house, he's bitten us and he's absolutely hated his new sister, attacking her whenever he could. We've been told he's a despot male and that we should never have got him a sister. They've been stressed, we've been stressed. But over the past three weeks she's been finally starting to win him over. Not friends yet, and she's still very scared, but there's definite progress at last.

The situation is better now, and she's got the upper paw now that she's bigger than him. She gives him a little swipe if he gets too close. Also, he's only three legged, so he's very much at a disadvantage. She likes to smell him all over while he eats. But they're not friends, he still bullies her.

It's been 6 weeks and my senior cats still hate my new kitten. To be fair, I don't blame them. She is constantly launching herself at them to get them to play. I've done everything--the isolation of the kitten, the scent swapping, the meet and greet with the kitten in a crate, I've put the kitten on a leash, I've bought the pheromone stuff--nothing seems to be working. I am at a loss.

Thank you so much for this! We’ve had my kitten for 3 days now. And I had him in our master bedroom. But i didn’t think about our cat being shut out. So now at night I put him in our bathroom and I let our other cat roam. My question is when do you officially know they’re good to be left alone without supervision?

You will just know. When they dont fight extra brutal anymore, when you can wash dishes without worrying about them. If you can sleep with no wild fighting, then its probably ok. Start small. Personally it took 3 weeks for my cats. From really bad to friends.

Thank you very much for your very helpful video. We have a new kitten Nala (3.5 month), since Sunday, 31st July 2022, and our resident cat, Hexi (3 years), is not very happy. I really wished I had seen this video three years ago when introducing my younger cat to my older one. But I learned a great deal. I'm about to get a little kitten and I feel better that I will do it right this time around. Thanks for this vide. My two current cats don't hate eachother, they tolerate one another and just stay out of eachother's way. So that's the best I can hope for after three years. LOL

We adopted a spayed female a month ago. She has settled in. Last Saturday we picked up a foster unspayed female. The initial meeting was pretty tame until my cat smelled the butt of the new cat. Then all hell broke loose. Right now they each have their own room and we are taking turns letting them out. Twice a day I feed them soft food about 4 or 5 ft apart. Some days are good. Other days my cat has attacked the foster cat. I know it takes time, but is it possible for my cat to accept this unspayed cat? If they would get along, i'd adopt the foster, too. But she is from the Humane Society and all of their surgeries are on hold right now. So I have no idea when she can spayed.

This is so helpful. We are getting a new kitten in the next couple weeks as long as she is negative for FIV (Her momma has it so the kittens have to be tested). We have a black cat named Kimba we've had since kittenhood (She's 13 years old now) and I'm expecting a lot of the hissing and growling that you mentioned. I'm hoping this kitten can provide her with some companionship in her older years that she never necessarily received from other cats before. She had a brother (Himalayan) for only about six months until he developed urinary tract infections and was blocked several times. We were in college and had little to no money to help the little guy out so after 3500 dollars we had to put him down, so Kimba didn't have much of a chance to hang out with her brother. I'm hoping she will find comfort in another kitty sibling.

Hi Caroline, Hi Everybody, Oh, I learned one thing when I took in Tiny Little Siamese Tommy when he was so little that I didn't even think he was weaned yet and was syringe feeding him around the clock. My Old Kitten Roary (who had been the youngest and so was the last one to be spoiled as being the darling kitten, but now he was over 4 years old) ... Roary was almost demonically crazy with hissing, getting Puffy, and dramatics. I thought he would KILL little Tommy and so I prepared a Carrier to be little Tommy's Safe Haven. But after a while it occurred to me that Roary's Sound and Fury was all AVOIDANT. Apparently Roary understood that the New Kitten wasn't to be killed, but Roary did want it to go away, and if Tommy wouldn't go, Roary would, and Roary would leave. Well, Little Tommy didn't make the situation any better, because as he became a very active kitten and realized that Roary was Inhibiting his Aggression, well, Little Tommy took advantage. I would try to give Roary his Quality Time, but Tommy would butt in and interfer. It took over 8 months until Little Tommy began to settle down and me and Roary could re-establish our old Quality Times. Oh, and then a new Rescue came aboard: Calico Peggy, also fresh from just having been a Kitten. Well, when Roary saw how Peggy tore into Little Tommy, and how Tommy respected that, and he saw how AFRAID Peggy was of him (Roary is BIG, only doesn't seem to know it) well, Roary, decided to stop being so Inhibited with Tommy and apparently kicked his little butt. Yeah, for a few weeks, between Peggy and Roary, Little Tommy was walking around with patches of fur missing and bite marks on his throat. Couldn't have happened to a better kitten. But, yeah, as Caroline Says, everybody is getting along fine now. Oh, and, yeah, BE CAREFUL if one of your cats is really being Dramatic and Excited, that is, all hissy and puffed up and crazy. Listen to this Horror Story. When Peggy was still an outdoor kitten and none of my responsibility (she was still CUTE and the whole neighborhood was feeding her and I thought someone else would give her a home, so the heck with her, right?... after about 6 months all that would change), well Roary was at the door going crazy to drive Peggy off, and I was pushing him back with my bare foot, and he BIT ME. I mean Roary is as big as a damned Raccoon!. Luckily it was just one Fang that went in, but it went in all the way. I guess I had a half inch nail hole in my foot... but it was an Animal Bite! I should have went to the Emergency room, but I was worried that the Doctor would see it was an Animal bite and make a big deal about Rabies and want to cut off Roary's head and do a lab test for Rabies. So i stayed home. Well, I put antibiotic ointment on it and every day IT DIDN'T GET ANY WORSE, and that was good enough to keep from going to the doctors . But it was red and my foot was swollen for about a month (that is, swollen all the time, and then for months after that, it would be swollen if I would be up and around), and it was about 3 months before the wound even scabbed over (it was a seeping wound that whole time), and it was 5 months before the scare tissue finally closed off the wound. (Now I look at it and Pray to God and my Angels that they let me get away with all that... and I reach down and touch it and it still hurts enough, like it is saying "remember me"). So Anyway, if it ever happens to you, just swear up and down that you dropped a barbecue fork off the kitchen counter and it stabbed your foot, and stick with the story. It is a shame that the Gawddamned Doctors have partnered up with the Gawddamned Social Workers so that everyone is afraid to go to the Hospital because those Stormtroopers will kick down your door for not being a perfect angel. But, anyway, ROARY was REALLY sorry he bit me. He knew he screwed up! He could taste my blood and as he was a Socialized Domestic Cat, well, biting his Human Guardian must have been a Nightmare for him. I once knew a Feral Kitten whose mother had brought him to my feeding station, and I was careless when I tried to catch him to take him to the Vet to get fixed, and he bit my thumb.... no big deal. Well, even HE was sorry! And he started following me around to re-assure me that he didn't mean it (so he was REALLY EASY to catch the next time). But, yeah, if you are going to separate Cats when they are all crazy, then wear shoes and heavy gloves. Like Caroline says, speak softly. what I do is I adopt the tone of pretending that I'm confused and don't know what the problem is, and so I am asking them if everything is alright. "Are you guys Okay?" And when they are both watching me instead of each other, then I reach in with reassuring touches. But I learned to not get Between them if the eyes are still locked on each other. Once Bitten, a Thousand Times Shy. Oh, Old Foxxy had jumped up to sleep with me, and he suddenly started scratching his ear with is hind foot... well, I must have thought he was BITING ME and so I screamed like a Girl! I guess I got Post Traumatic Stress. Roary too. He's still really sorry. Maybe that is why he was so Inhibited with Little Tommy. Roary never wanted to bite anything or anyone ever again.

Our youngest cat, a little B&W boy who was the runt of the litter, will come running every time another cat in the house gets attention (we have 5). No matter where he is he seems to know the other cats are getting attention even though he gets plenty, too. There's no hostility, but it's really funny how he butts into everything.

Wow! You have sure experienced kitty armageddon! A tooth through the toenail - OMG...agony! Scott you are totally right: when cats go into "Crazy Mode" they do not differentiate their beloved mom/dad, their own siblings, or their best friend from the enemy. You really do have to watch out to make sure they don't scratch or bite you - cat bites can be BAD. I have a foster friend who was recently attacked by a momma cat who turned on her when another cat ran into the bathroom where she and her kittens were being housed. My friend tried to separate the two cats and momma attacked her. She spent 48 hours in the hospital getting IV antibiotics! It was a lesson learned for all of our foster group. It's easy to let your guard down once you think you "really know" the cats and not take precautions. I don;t want people to be scared of cats, but I want them to be careful...for their own sake AND for the kitty's sake. Thanks for sharing, Scott! **Caroline

@@KittenSchool 48 Hours in the Hospital! Well, I guess it was better than what I did. Oh, the Fang didn't go through a toe. It was about an inch in from the outer edge of the foot, and about two inches in from the root of the little toe. So, yeah, I would sleep with the foot up to bring down the swelling, and then band aid up in the morning and stick my foot into the shoe, and the shoe would contain the swelling (I saved that pair of shoes and the Left is, for the Bite Foot, looks like a Basketball mated with an Italian Loafer, as it is all stretched out from the swelling). But, really, I should have put my Schooling on the back burner and took care of that foot (which is easy to say now, but I got straight A's that semester). I don't no how close I came to that wound getting septic, necrotic and my losing the whole foot, or even leg. OH! about getting scratched. In the last couple of years I got my Double Hip Replacement. Well, I live in the Tropics and the Island finally got it's own Hospital and the Hip Program was ramping up but there were Credit Issues with the Hospital (Rich Capitalist Countries don't trust Little Brown Islands, but a VA Nurse got them on the phone and asked "Do we need an official investigation?) But I was on a waiting list for over a year and what happens with bad hips is that bone mass buildup around the bad joints closes off mobility (the tell tale "penguin walk" of Hip or Knee degeneration), so I had the First Operation, and the Doctor never thought of telling me to drop my pants before the operation so he could check for signs of pre-existing infections. But when they got me on the Table, there they were, all the Cat Scratches from cats 'pulling themselves up into bed at night'. Well, the Doctor said "We'll, we can't keep putting off this guy's operation.... we'll double up on the anti-biotics" and went they went on with the operation. But afterwards, he told me before the second operation he would have me stripped naked and check for cat scratches, and turn me around if I showed up with any on Operation Day. Wow! I learned to sleep covered up, and even built a little set of Kitty Stairs so that old Foxxy could climb the stairs to come to bed instead of Grabbing Leg to pull himself up (over the years, Gritting My Teeth became part of our Quality Time). OH! It was after the Hip Replacements when I got the Bite. It turns out the Infections are sort of attracted to Prosthesis Hardware, and so in addition to the pain and swelling in the foot, I was also having some pain from the most recent Hip Replacement (my doctor waited six months between operations). Damn! I guess I should have a Live In Nurse, huh?... to keep me out of trouble. OH! Caroline, this is what you can tell everybody. When I first started out as a Volunteer in the Kennels, all the Cat Workers told me their basic rule: "At the first sign of aggression, DROP THE CAT". That trick came in handy when I had my Feral Cat Feeding Stations and I would try to save time by just snatching up cats to take to the Vet instead of putting out traps (yeah, just "Grab Catches" are good for the little Half Feral Kittens who never distrust you as much as Mom does), but as soon as I realize my grip isn't just right and they might be resistant, I just drop them just like that, and I pretend that nothing happened and go on putting out food or whatever, and then the little kitten will be looking like "WTF just happened?", but since nothing of consequence did actually happen (accept that I touched them and everything is still alright), they forget about it relatively quickly. but, yeah, if Little Fluffy ever goes 'All Animal', DROP and or STEP BACK. Always great talking with you Caroline.

Thanks for these videos, I keep coming back to them for HOPE as we go through this transition. We are 2 1/2 weeks into bringing our new kitten, Lulú, into our home. I’ve watched your videos and followed all the advice. My resident cat, Her Grayce , is about 3 y/o. She is still at the hissing, growling, & swatting stage, although she has hissed then turned her back to clean herself in front of the kitten. Once she even showed the kitten her belly, but simultaneously growling (a bit of mixed messaging?) It’s mostly growling & hissing. My first concern is that Her Grayce will charge in the kitten’s direction, unprovoked by Lulú. She stops short of pouncing, but I think that’s only because I’m there to say “No, not ok.” And then I move Lulú away. Second, Her Grayce is not very food motivated. She casually grazes through the day. So even though they have set feeding times, she may or may not be ready to eat more when it’s time to feed Lulú. So the simultaneous feeding has been tough bc if I bring Lulú in to eat while Her Grayce is eating, Her Grayce just leaves the room. Any ongoing advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for these videos!

If it’s been a week, and my cat still sits at the door growling and hissing at the new kitten, should I attempt a see, but not touch meeting? Or just keep hoping she will eventually stop growling/hissing before trying that?

Yes, but make sure you are able to supervise and separate in case your big cat tries to attack or bite the kitten. Have you tried taking a blanket that the kitten has slept on and letting your adult cat sniff it?

You should reintroduce them. It's not good or normal for cats to actually fight. Having a small swatting match or some hissing to re-establish social heiarchy might be normal in cats that aren't super close, but fighting is not cool. It's stressful and could escalate to cats actually hurting each other. If reintroducing doesn't work, you should probably rehome one of the kitties unless you are willing to split your house and keep them away from each other for 15-20 years.
