Video taken while I was in the Keys discussing the systems and setup on my Catalina 28. Mostly me rambling about the boat, not professional but may be somewhat informative to some sailboat owners.

A friend of mine has a new electric motor for the dinghy, so fantastic!!! Lightweight so easy for women to put on and off the dinghy. And it has about 10 hours of charge. I met Chris at a homeopathic event this past weekend

Thank you. It felt extemporaneous but was a very clear and thorough description of your stuff. I’m curious about water makers. I’d have thought you’d want one for extended sailing. Since it wasn’t included, I’m curious if the power requirements overshadowed the weight reductions by not having to sore so much water. Nice setup. I’m very impressed!

Just found this. I'm probably going to be getting a Cape Dory or an O'Day 26. My teeth are already chattering. This is going to be an adventure!🤞👍♥️

Learned to Sail on an Oday 30 and the Cape Dory are known for their seaworthiness. Good luck and enjoy the journey.

She is a great little boat. If you end up buying a Catalina 28 there is a great owners group full of great information and help. Cheers back.

Ty It was VERY informative. Looks like you've done a ton of upgrades including getting her dialed in for solo sailing. What year is your vessel?
@Supergeek01233 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. She is a 1996 which is the first year of the Mark 2 version. I have owned her since 2016. Even though I primarily day sail I wanted her to be capable of extended trips without major failures.

Great content, very informative. Just a question: where were your winches and other outside gear stolen from? A marina, at anchor or on the hard? Any tips on how to prevent this from happening?
@Supergeek01233 жыл бұрын
This happened at my previous marina. I am pretty sure it was an inside job, someone who worked there. They had seen me working on the boat for weeks and the cabin was full of rigging, tools and gear. They also took my marine spares kit full of stainless hardware and did actually a good job removing the winches with minimal damage. They obviously had a marine background. I was the only boat that was burglarized. There were also no cameras there. My new marina has cameras and I also have someone living aboard two slips down. Having someone there is a huge deterrent. I do not keep any of the big expensive gear on the boat anymore. I also have some motion activated hidden cameras now. Obviously I moved my boat out of my previous marina within a week. Hope you never have to experience it.

@@Supergeek0123 That blows. Theft has always been a crime of opportunity but we are taught to trust people. Technology today gives us tools to protect ourselves and others and it is a booming business because of crime. Because I have been the victim of burglary and theft in the past I guess I've become more cognizant of protecting my things. It all becomes an additional expense to protect yourself. Sorry for your loss, be safe out there. Love your videos.

So could/would you take this boat into the open seas? Like say across the Atlantic?
@Supergeek01232 жыл бұрын
People have done crazier things but I would not do an Atlantic crossing with her. She is not built for that mission. The smallest Catalina I would make an Atlantic Crossing is probably a Catalina 36 and there are several that have circumnavigated in Catalina 42's. Still she is a great boat for the Bahamas and the Keys which are my cruising grounds.

I own the MKI version and sail Lake Huron. I was caught in THREE consecutive thunderstorms 15 miles offshore last year. I swear my 28 shrank to 8’ in those waves! We both survived the huge (to me) waves but I cannot imagine being caught offshore on an ocean passage with such a small boat. The worse the weather, the smaller your boat seems.

how many miles you get with the 5 gallon gas tank?
@Supergeek01232 жыл бұрын
The diesel motor uses about .4/gallons an hour at 5.5 Knots. The dinghy will go about 3-4 knots and .5 gallon will last about an hour.
