Hey there, I’m Cinzia DuBois On this channel, I talk about dark and ancient history, literature and folklore.

Please don’t be so hard on yourself. In 30 minutes, almost 1,000 people came to listen to you. Imagine if you gave this talk in a library, and in half an hour’s time, a thousand people from around the world poured into the building anxious to hear you speak. That’s exactly what’s happened here… but, unfortunately, you can’t see the faces of the people watching you, listening to you, enjoying who you are. Remember, talk to yourself no more harshly than you would talk to someone you care deeply about. And if you’re doubting your “success” (and who really knows what that means anyway) just remind yourself that the great number of people who are watching you are real… just try and picture them all at once!

@@bwackbeedows3629 while I agree it's nice when creators engage with their comments, keeping up with that is yet another thing that takes time to do, and it sounds like Cinzia already has about 9000 things on her plate at the moment. I hope she's reading some of the supportive comments she receives, and that they are filling her with warm fuzzies, but if she doesn't have time, that's fair. And it may be she reads them but deciding which ones to like and reply to also takes up too much mental bandwidth - because realistically she can't respond to all of us, and sometimes even a few more tiny decisions is a few more decisions too many in a day. Obviously I can't speak for her, but I know I've been there. TLDR - silence doesn't mean she doesn't give a damn, it's probably because she's busy and, as we can tell from her recent videos, struggling a little.

I completely relate, Brittney. I have camera anxiety with photography (I cry when people try to take photos of my face and often crop myself out of cute couple photos). I get anxiety editing videos, so it takes me days to get around to touching the footage. For what it's worth, I have to tell myself life is too short (I say that, I still don't think I'll have any photos taken of me on my wedding day haha, the idea makes me want to crawl inside my skin). But I second that comment - you have a gorgeous smile!

We hung out a handful of times and, on one of the last times we saw each other, you gifted me a copy of Dune and insisted that I read it. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture during a very dark time for me. I still have it (I'm staring at it right now on my bookshelf) and have read it and fallen in love with it all thanks to you. I've been a quiet fan of your videos for years now. The first time I showed one of your videos to my wife she asked how I found it. With a giant smile I told her "Oh that's my friend Cinzia". Your passion, creativity, and profound insight and intelligence has been a true joy to watch every time you post. I am also navigating the pains and frustration of staying afloat as a creative in this strange new world, but I can say with my whole heart that you are a notch above the rest. Hang in there. Here are a few thoughts: 1. Making KZbin videos isn't easy, and I have noticed a trend among creators who are saying that it's a punishing medium. I think your videos are quite good. It's easy to see that I'm not the only one. 2. I am a Classics PhD, adjunct, and high school teacher. I think you're a real Classicist. Do you use your Subscriptions page? A lot of people only use their "Home" page because that's what they are shown first, and they keep changing the algorithm for that but your Subscriptions page/tab (which you can always click on) should show you everything in order, notifications or not. I always check that first.

I saw this literally right after recording a Q&A video where I talk about a lot of what you just mentioned, and it seems the two of us (and possibly more like us) have been going through the same motions over the past couple years-- that we've been at this KZbin thing for over a decade and finally made it to where we can make a living doing what we love... only to start feeling immensely burnt out, thinking it was me "losing my passion", and not just me being overwhelmed at the Sisyphean algorithmic squirrel chase. I'm trying to shift to a philosophy of "pretend my audience is x-thousand copies of me" (i.e. make the videos you most want to see), so you're welcome to steal that if you want. I think what you talked about doing at the end is a really good idea, and I hope everything works out and you find some sort of balance where your channel keeps doing well whilst letting you feel satisfied with what you do for it!

Hey Cinzia! I used to always love each one of your videos. I wanted to come here and say something that you don't seem to be considering. We are all tired of screens and social media. I've been using it considerably less and channels that I used to watch every single new video, I just don't do it anymore. It has nothing to do with how much I like them or the quality of their content. And I think this is a truth that a lot of us is going through, especially the older viewers. Algorithm wont tell you that. It will always say that you need to change to perform better. You are doing just fine, and we all are just trying to navigate these hard times. @CinziaDuBois you have been a huge help. I started watching to refresh on the classics since I put my youngest daughter in an online classical education school. I wanted her to have the lovely education I did since it is drastically apparent how the education system is creating zombies in the states. She is Dyslexic as well. Ah Cinzia please don't be hard on yourself. I am a KZbin creator too and know how difficult it can be with the ebbs and flows of content, often it feels like you are pressured to make things you don't 100% want to because they perform well. Please stay true to yourself and the right people will be attracted to you. for my part, what made me subscribe was your video take-down of "bear ears" and her weird "Rome never existed" conspiracy theory, and i think it was just how comfortable you seemed with the topic to make an unscripted response video. clearly, you researched your responses before filming yourself, but it was also a subject you could speak to with ease. i don't know if that video was 'easier' to make than the others you've made, but it definitely *clicked* for me.

Same here! I really like to hear someone who can debunk misinformation with such grace. I also like following other creators that do it across many genres. I believe it’s important to consider the source when consuming information so it was great to come across someone who is so knowledgeable. I would love to see more of that but I totally understand if it’s not something that you want to do more - I also enjoy other videos :)

I only discovered your channel in the last 6ish months but have to say that I think you are fantastic. Your personality really connects with me and I am glad that you are not throwing in the towel. All of the reasons you gave for having begun to resent youtubing are part of why I've never had the courage to post anything despite creating a handful of channels over the years. As an 18-year-old in 2011, I would not have been able to face seeing myself on film long enough to edit even a 3-minute video. But lately I've begun to really feel compassion for the kid I was an what that girl was going through, and I regret letting my ed and every other trauma stop me from pursuing what I want to do. After my physical health stopped my attempt at pursuing a Master's degree for the second time, it might be time to look at my academic interests from a hobbyist point of view. Hang in there, Cinzia.

I've found much of what you've put out both literature and mythology-wise as well as personal to be worthwhile. Though I will admit, the tone and tenor of your more recent personal videos did make me worry for you. If you were my friend, I would've called you after some of those videos and insisted we work things out to move you to a less bleak place and would've refused to get off the phone until we achieved it...but I'm not your friend, I'm just a guy on the internet who loves books and mythology and so some of those made me feel powerless in a bad way. As a result, I think I may have clicked on viewer videos just as an avoidant strategy to not feel that way again. I do really love your stuff though and I hope you keep creating. And I hope this change brings you the equilibrium you're looking for as a creator.

As someone who originally came for the history content and somewhat dropped off as of late…I don’t think you need to apologize, honestly. I still watch what I think is interesting or relatable of the new content and haven't unsubscribed because you’re likable…and I just assume you’ll maybe go back and I’d like to be here for that. Sometimes you need to do things you must do and create things you must create despite them being liked or viewed in the way our society deems successful. As a result we tend to internalize that idea of “success” and are so harsh on ourselves when we don’t measure up to that. We become less of ourselves striving for that. Really hope you don’t hear yourself up if the views don’t roll in! Sometimes things take time, and it’s always best to have a loyal, trusting audience rather than people who jump on because of trends. I also personally don’t like personal videos where we hear too much about people’s “journey.” as a skeptic on KZbin I often don’t trust in that type of content anymore because of the way many content creators manipulate their audiences willingness to believe them. Every once in a while I’m deeply moved by something of that nature on youtube…but on the whole it’s not for me. I still didn’t want to unsubscribe though because I think you’re a likable figure and assumed you needed to just make more content like that for your own sake. It’s all good!

I honestly love watching your videos. Even if I’m not looking for classics or book reviews. I watch your essay writing videos every year since my undergrad and currently during my MSW. Currently rewatch them every week while making progress on my assignments and dissertation while watching your current videos on how you’re doing.
