interesting repair. i dont have the tools to do such a repair so i would have to replace the 20$ charge controller.

Ah, but you can get a soldering iron kit for under $10 on ebay! The one you see me using was just such a kit. It's not a Weller but it serves my needs. But I know what you mean!
