Using AutoAStat I found out my 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur has some unbelievable stories. It came out of Florida, it was only $12,000, and all it needed was keys or the immobilizer replaced with one from a Cayenne... it turns out the keys work perfectly but there are so many problems, fire, hacked up wiring harnesses, missing parts, and possibly a broken steering column. If the steering column doesn't work the car can't even begin to start. Working on a Bentley is like staring down a black hole.

It's definitely a heck of a challenge, but this is probably one of my favorite cars you've bought. I LOVE working through issues like this. It totally sucks all that wiring is totally butchered like that, I am not a professional mechanic by any means, but man I stand behind whatever work I do. It seriously makes me nauseous looking at that hack wiring they did. You'll get it JR, I know you will, and it'll be the nicest damn car you've ever owned.

I have a feeling it’s not the steering column lock module, but all stemming back to the fact that the car is “stuck” in drive. The steering column lock actually has a lockout, just like on all cars, which is enabled when the vehicle is in a in-motion gear. Think about it… if the car died on the highway or had some type of catastrophic failure while moving or at speed, the steering column needs to remain unlocked so the direction can still be controlled while attempting to come to a safe stop. If it locked, you’d have zero steering control, as dangerous as losing brakes, probably worse. I say start there and NOT at the column. Get the car to read as in park and who knows, then you can trace down the next issue or it might then even start.

Exact same thing happened to my bentley. Water gets behind the firewall because of the rain water build up in the cowl. Water gets to the kessy module and under the passenger seat. The steering wheel won’t lock, the gears shift and the car can roll, all while not starting at all. Took the Bentley dealer 4 months and $8,000 to fix it.

There's 2 points on that shifter where the ecu knows what gear it's in One is the neutral safety switch itself And the second is actually attached to that sliding shutter mechanism on the shifter There's a small piece of metal attached to the underside of it that corresponds to little Hall effect sensors under the aluminum PRNDLS trim piece You should inspect the whole mechanism and make sure everything in there is ok

Second school of thought: Typically a stirring wheel will not lock if the vehicle is in gear. If the computer thinks the car is in gear, it more than likely won't actuate the motor to lock the steering wheel (safety mechanism). I would lean more towards the gear shift/position sensing mechanism before ripping the steering column out.

Years ago my FIL picked up a Mercedes that had a dash fire and melted almost all the wires in the dash area. I spent weeks replacing wire by wire and got it to start, but it wouldn't stay running. He got disgusted and sold it to a friend that discovered that I missed one wire in the harness - once it was replaced the car started and ran like a champ. He ran the car for years and always felt guilty that he bought it (I didn't - I was tired of chasing wires!). That said, it's kind of fun watching you go through almost the same process in trying to get this up and running again.

I personally like a good wiring puzzle "if" you have the right tech diagrams available. Diagrams showing connector location, connector pinout, system diagrams are a must to even have a chance to diag a system that is that bad. I would guess the car was "altered" in multiple places in order to be able to get it out of gear and steer. Just need to find out where the alteration was done and return those places back to stock.

I would probably make sure the wiring harness has been visually inspected and fixed before diving into other issues. Even if it is pulling 12v, the wires could move around and cause shorts. Whatever was spliced in probably wasn't fused properly, the wires heated up and caused a minor fire.

Looks like time to go acquire some A8 column parts and the prndl from LKQ! Go JR! I would start with the prndl - logically the computer should not allow the wheel to lock if the car is in gear - driving safety and what not.
