This song was written by the singer (Gerard) for his brother. He and his brother are incredibly close especially at the time of this album. The both of them went through some rough times during the recording of this album. Gerard's brother, Mikey, attempted to off himself, and seeing as the two were very close, it shook Gerard up. So to convince his brother to keep living, and stay alive, he wrote this song. And well, it worked. 13 years later Mikey has a wife and two daughters. I feel more than anything this song symbolizes triumph over hard times and getting better. As for the line where he says "If you stay, I'll be forgiven" I think he might of thought that Mikey's issues were because of him, and the only way he could forgive himself is if Mikey got better.

This song is a little hard to grasp if you haven’t listed to the whole album (which I highly recommend). But essentially the album follows a character called “the patient” who learns that he’s dying of cancer, and it follows him as he tries to mend relationships, reflect back on his life, realize his fate, reflect again, accept his fate, reflect some more, and then reflect even more. “Famous Last Words” has a lot of layers to it (like most of their songs) but in the context of the story he is no longer afraid to carry on and it’s up to you to interpret in the end whether he is alive or in the afterlife.

I have "I'm not afraid to keep on living. I'm not afraid to walk this world alone." Tattooed on my ankle. Thus song helped me through high school and it serves as a reminder of that. Love this song and recently found "The World is Ugly" which has become my second favorite.

Lead singer Gerard Way had said in a interview with Kerrang! magazine that the line, "I am not afraid to walk this world alone" played some part in the break up with his then girlfriend, known as "Katmandu." The last lines of the song imply that the patient's lover is in fact the person who has died. "I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak" suggests that the Patient's lover is lying next to him in a coffin, as he speaks about her during the funeral service. The line "Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead" is further evidence that the Patient is alive and has entered into some new state of self-perception, that he has cleared himself of regrets. However there is no mention of the Patient's state; whether he has recovered from his illness or not. Though the song is named "Famous Last Words", that term is generally used when someone has died, and they have said their Famous Last Words.

Its about the gerards, who is the singer, brother mikey. They recorded the album in the paramour mansion and it took a massive toll on everyone. During the recording mikey had a breakdown and left for a few weeks to get help. While he was away Gerard wrote famous last words for him because the two have always been really close. When Mikey first heard the song, it convinced him to rejoin

Welcome to the Black Parade Album is worth listening to all of them. I grew up on this music and it was my first way into music along with Em and other artist. This album is more a war torn image but the whole album is basically a story. Their style has changed but it is interesting and a classic already. It's all about if I get the meaning, a soilders death and other stuff. I also recommend "Ghost of You by MCR

Linkin Park made me listen to music again, In the End specifically, and then one day I heard this g note, discovered this good ass song in my iPod nano and didn't even know the title of it, my sister borrowed it and put her playlist on it. I got like 200 songs in it and had to press next for like 100 times since it is in the middle. I've been listening to it for years and decided to watch it on YT when we got internet for the first time. It was kinda scary for me as a kid. There are 4 songs on the nano that I keep repeating, 2 of it were I write sins not tragedies and Love the Way You Lie.

Album concept is about a person with Cancer and each song is a part of his journey through illness and the acceptance of his own death; the bonds that retain him in this world, memories, experiences and loved ones are expressed and reflected on each and every song. This is the final song of the album, and as far as I understand it leaves the story open to any ending the listener imagines, maybe the patient has decided to fight back the illness or just letting go for the rest of his days in peace with himself. One thing about MCR songs is that they can express a large rank of emotions in one song. In this song the patient wants his loved one to stay with him to the end but he can't force her, he knows that nothing he says can change the past, he's aware he's about to die, and wants to explain how he feels about everything, his life, his death (everything he never thought he could express) and wants her to accompany him until the end, but he's not afraid anymore if she is not willing to be with him, and also he acepts that he's dying and nothing she says is gonna change that, if she stays, he'll know that she has forgiven him but if not, he is ready to live the rest of his days alone and then 'go home'. And about being forgiven is more an existencial forgiveness, if she stays with him to the end, he'll feel that despite not being a good son, lover, friend or person in general, at the end at least he was worth it for someone, he will feel forgiven by life, God or whatever religious figure he believes in. 🤔 We never get to know when he dies but the art in the album let us know that he gets to leave this world free from all the attachments that once tormented him and tied him at some point in his life. I sincerely recommend you to check the complete content of the album and its art so you have a better idea of its meaning. I hope I explained correctly, let me know what you think.

Gerard Way (the lead singer) is also a comic book writer. The Umbrella Academy (which is now a Netflix series) is his main series he's created, and he also created the Penny Parker anime spiderman for the Spiderverse comic arc in a one-off for Marvel, and that character made an appearance in the Spiderverse movie. So he's been busy outside of music.

Hey Doc!The song is part of The Black Parade storyline. Try and listen to the whole album in one sitting, this is the last song. Sometimes the lyrics get a bit confusing because Gerard (the frontman) goes back and forth between being The Patient, the people he leaves behind and something that sounds like an omniscient narrator.

I went to high school in a rival high school in NJ where they are from. I also was a regular at what's now called the Dublinder in Hoboken NJ where they killed it as one of their first debut gigs and its filmed I believe somewhere. Since then they became one of my top 3 bands ever. Its Rock-opera. That's just as simple as I can put their unique take on emo music. Hands down Gerard Way and his brother were the driving talent but the lead guitarist plays sheer opera-worthy riffs that created such a legendary band. Its just not only the lyrics. Take in the music you will never have another band like them. They are irreplaceable. Its sad Gerard mostly was a closet homosexual with quite the amount of depression and mental issues an admitted drunk coping with heavy addictions and a full on passion for writing comic book sort of stories ( hence "The Umbrella Academy" on Netflix. To really understand MCR listen to their main stream stuff like My Helena and SING. I'd love to see your reaction to other ones as well like disenchanted. I'm curious. Are you doing this because of POST MALONE'S decision to end many of his venues with your previous song The Black Parade? Or why are you looking into MCR now so many years after they broke up? I'm just curious if its Post Malone's actual doing that this song is obscurely re blowing up in a TOTALLY different demographic. Hope you enjoy the best they've got in so many other songs. Please, my father passed away of cancer when he was 38 and I was 17. Listen to "cancer" and tell us what you think. Its a short song but classic, covered by many known and unknown bands I'd love to see your reaction. Thanks for your videos!

@@docrich The drummer got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his legs from the fire, but insisted on staying through the filming. As for Gerard, the lead singer, some of the muscles in his leg and ankle were torn. Apparently, at one point when he was kneeling, the guitarist with the striped sleeves (Frank) tackled him and caused the injury. Frank gets a little...we'll just say hyper...while performing. (Actually, the boy is constantly moving, jumping, spinning, etc). And the other guitarist, the one that just shreds, Ray, fractured his fingers. Not sure how, but that is what I have read elsewhere.
