My Chevy Cruze overheated! But Why ?
So my son's Chevy Cruze over heated. The upper radiator hose popped off, not sure why. Let's put the hose back on and top up our coolant, hopefully no damage. Let's order some new hoses and replace them.

Hose clamps are inferior because that don't adjust to heat and pressure like the other clamps. I have a 14. Water intake assembly broke just under the upper hose connection. I've never seen that happen. My plan was to cut the end of the hose and reconnect until I could replace the whole thing. Always something.

The lack of a heat shield on that turbo is concerning. The heat from the turbo could damage the cooling fan, if it hasn't already. I would find a heat shield and install it as soon as I could and check the fan for damage and verify correct operation in all modes (Low, Med, and Hi speeds. Requires a scantool).

I'm with you I don't like those Factory clamps but they are designed to work better...the whole idea is that there is constant tension on the hose because of the Heating and Cooling and the hose degrades.perfect example if that had one of those pressure clamps on that upper hose it probably would have never slipped off...bottom line factory hose clamps constant pressure for years and years...

Absolutely also they are perfectly round as opposed to the hose clamps that have a flat spot. They are sometimes hard to get hold of and squeeze just right. I find them hateful but once in place they are great.

The factory clamps on my vehicles started leaking because they lost clamping force. Replaced them with screw style and didn't overtighten, been working for years now. Best part is, if it starts to leak, just righted them up a little.

If you're opening the cooling system like that and it hasn't been done in the last 70k miles, replace the water outlet. It is plastic and has failed with predictability on both my vehicles with this motor. after the 3rd time, I just bought a aluminum one. Yeah its 7x the price, but if you factor in all the coolant loss, and if you don't have backup (someone to tow you) that can get expensive quick. ZZ performance is who I bought mine from. I think they were $50 at the time. The engines vibrate a lot, and when the motor mounts lose strength, it shakes harder, stressing that plastic. On top of that, when the pcv system fails (which it will) it makes it run even more rough. It's a compounding issue and the only fix the dealer gives is to replace the intake manifold. Do yourself a favor and but a reroute pcv kit. I installed them on both my vehicles because they both were missing the pcv nipple in the intake by 60k miles. A lot of people hate on these engines and I see why. A lot of "engineering" to save money. Also the demographic purchasing these vehicles are not extremely keen on spending a lot on repairs. And the lack of information around the systems implemented leave a lot of people in the dark as to what the problems are. I picked one up on the assumption it had a blown head gasket (coolant in oil but no oil in coolant). Turns out it was the oil cooler leaking only one way. P.S if your serpentine belt looks like its vibrating and your tensioner is bouncing, check your alternator, since it uses a overruning alternator pulley. Which no one sells for under $120, so its a part that causes you to replace your alternator because of a expensive wear part that needs replacement every 70k miles. A new alternator is $160, and you have to remove it from the vehicle to even replace the pulley, so you're now just replacing alternators instead. Big oversight on costs, but thats the "life of the vehicle" according to dealership warranty.
