@emilyfarley1525
@emilyfarley1525 Жыл бұрын
@heatherk8931 chicks should be hatching around day 20 or 21. If they hatch before that (mine hatched day 18) they might not be ready, because while it may only be a couple days, for baby chicks that's a significant amount of growing time that they need. The four that hatched on day 18 died pretty fast while they were pecking themselves out. A couple still had their imbilicle cord attached, and one didn't even filly get out of the egg before it died of exhaustion I'm assuming. Hatching takes a lot of effort, and even chicks born full term can die from the exhaustion of it, sadly.

Just for anyone, wondering you’re supposed to take your hen and separate them if they crack an egg or else they will start cracking tons of eggs, including fertile ones, and all the chickens will start eating your eggs and you won’t get any more eggs so you’re giving them a time out so they won’t crack eggs but this guy could give his hen someone else’s eggs to hatch and she would probably hatch them but if she’s cracking eggs, you probably don’t want her near them but you also don’t want her depressed for not being able to hatch eggs ❤❤❤

They will also eat eggs if they get too thirsty. They can be broken of it even if they've been doing it for a while but you have to collect eggs as soon as they are laid for a couple of weeks and make sure there's lots of treats and food around for them. I've inherited a few that were egg eaters; never yet had one that kept doing it after a week or two of removing eggs post haste.

She would be able to get out of chicken jail in 2 days if you put the cage on bricks for good airflow. She is broody because her body temperature has risen and has caused her hormones to go into baby hatching mode. Once her body temp drops back down to normal (the reason to raise the cage off the ground) her hormones will go back to normal. You can gently spray her underside with the garden hose which speeds up the body temp drop. Also if you ever have 2 hens go broody they each need their own cage. Otherwise they will huddle up and they will stay broody. I have a couple repeat offenders that seem to run hot alot 😂

My favorite thing to do with broody hens is to graft day old chicks onto them at night. They wake up thinking they hatched their eggs, then immediately switch to mother hen mode. I have two chickens that go broody every year, and I have successfully gotten them to adopt 8 chicks that are now productive members of my flock. You can only do this if they’ve proven that they’re committed and sat on the nest for at least 2 weeks.

I've done it with hens that have sat on the nest for less than a week but generally speaking the longer the better, I had a welsummer reject some and waited another week and she accepted. Hi I’d just like to explain some things I am a chicken owner of 6 chickens, however 2 dies so now 4 When a chicken is called ‘brudy’ it means they want to hatch eggs and be a mum, however without a rooster this will be impossible, when he put her in ‘jail’ it’s not actually it’s just a separating process which will stop the brudy phase and it’s perfectly safe for hens I have had 3 brudy hens- Apollo, Pringle and Yokey R.I.P Apollo and Boris you will forever live in my heart Hope this helped have a nice day ❤

We had some really good mother hens who would raise the chicks even if they weren't hers. We would simply leave more eggs in their nest when they went to eat. My parents got the eggs from the ones who were known to break the eggs. You could possibly see if anyone is selling fertilized eggs near you (which sounds weird) but is something you can buy.

I know, but the problem is that when they're brooding they rarely eat or drink, so letting them continuously brood over eggs that won't hatch causes dehydration and malnutrition. They also tend to get depressed and frustrated from brooding for too long. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

@@KittyBabyMan I’m only replying so I’ll get notified when someone answered because I don’t know either and now I’m curious! I wonder if it’s the same thing here?
@suzbone
@suzbone Жыл бұрын
@@axuwu6939 you're on the right track- broodiness is partly triggered by increased heat, and can be "broken" by reducing temperature. Chickens don't really mind rain; the saying "Mad as a wet hen" comes from farmers using the old cold bucket of water plunge method. Broody hens are SUPER irritable already so imagine how cross one would be after being taken off her nice warm nest to be stuck into a bucket of cold water!

With my parents, they always added a small pole for the hen to roost on at night. Not a nest box, but like...a thick wooden dowel. That way she could still be up/off the dirt and comfy, but not able to create a nest/lay eggs/brood. Worked every time for all the chickens I can recall having while growing up.
