My Choice - The Three Tenors: The Holy City (Jerusalem)

The Holy City (Jerusalem) - music by Stephen Adams, lyrics by Frederick E. Weatherly, sung by the Three Tenors, showing photos of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and some of the Churches found on it. Photos by Miki Pitish taken from a Power Point presentation.
The song is recorded in the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review in 1911 as having been sung by an opera singer awaiting trial for fraud in his cell while a group of men arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct were before the judge. The men were said to have dropped to the knees as the song began 'Last night I lay a-sleeping, There came a dream so fair.', the lyrics contrasting with their previous night's drunkenness. The song's conclusion resulted in the judge dismissing the men without punishment, each having learned a lesson from the song.

My late Mother, Maureen sang this hymn when she was young in a concert and years later we were carol singing for charity together in Heuston Station Dublin with my musical society. Mam stepped up to the radio mike and sang this to the people in the train station en route to and from wherever they were heading for Christmas. She was triumphant and amazing and somehow I'll always associate it with that very special moment. And I'm certain I'll one day see and hear her singing it should I be lucky enough to get to the New Jerusalem. RIP Mam.

This takes me back about 25 years to when my dad sang this song at our Christmas service on year. I still have the sheet music with all the notes as scribbles of how we practiced. What a memory!! Really enjoy the Irish Tenors performance of this beautiful piece which invokes great memories for myself - we sung it so often in our homes with family and friends, complete with my grandpa conducting us all❤️ The tempo is spot on in this version - IMHO!

The composer whose real name was Michael Maybrick is quite a mystery. Extremely talented, he was a freemason, involved in sex scandals, and along with his brother James (poisoned by his own wife) are both serious suspects in the Jack the Ripper murder events.

Remember the first time I heard this majestic song was when George Beverly Shea, who was with The Billy Graham team. Over 50 years ago and still everytime I hear it ; it brings goosebumps.

it is called, The Holy City. maybe if you look for that name, you will find it. The song, Jerusalem, is another song. hope that helps. also, the name of the composer will help.

Would the poster ever correct the title to The Irish Tenors. These are not the Three Tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras). The Irish tenors were JohnMcDermott, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan and others too. But there is a big difference between the "Three Tenors" and the "Irish Tenors". So correct you title then.
