I really enjoyed this! At 76 my sailing days are over! Nothing like waking up to waves lapping against the hull! I remember one morning looking out the hatch of my Albert 22 early one morning and seeing Orion saying "good morning"! Live life young people. Forget the iPad and get out there !

What a beautiful boat!..I used to own a traditional wooden yacht with bowsprit and stern bumpkin. Bermudian rigged with stay sail carvel mahogany on Oak frames ..I fully understand your love of such a beautiful yacht. Agree wholeheartedly that timber boats have a unique soul and are so different and more pleasurable to sail than their glassfibre equivalents..simply Chalk and cheese.Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful video and boat. I used to sail a friends FB in Hawaii. The fwd guy snapped out of its swaged fitting and the loose footed mast went over the side. We "bumped" onto a reef near Diamond Head but a powerboat rescued us and pulled us free. Most excitement ever!

I never really appreciated the boat building heritage of my home stretch on the Essex coast until I found one (Built in Rowhedge) still carrying passengers on lake Wakatipu, New Zealand. Good to see a fine boat, well cared for upon the water.
@hanoitripper18094 жыл бұрын
Joel - do they build tradional wooden boats in that area of nz?
@ThyCorylus4 жыл бұрын
@@hanoitripper1809 I'm not sure in all honesty. I know there are a few boat yards still producing small sailing craft around NZ. But I can't speak of any in the Otago region.
@uncletiggermclaren75923 жыл бұрын
@@hanoitripper1809 People MIGHT build a boat in Otago, as a hobby, but there isn't an industry. It doesn't really have many safe harbours, the coastline is really dangerous to sail around, very few safe natural harbours, and some of the roughest seas year round, of anywhere in the world. It is firmly in the Roaring Forties, and the fetch of the seas has pretty much the whole bottom of the world to build up, and it sees some severe weather. Kiwis are pretty famously the worlds best sailor-men as you know, but even we don't treat South Island waters as places to just go for a casual jaunt. So the average Kiwi who was going to build boats, would ( and do ) simply do it somewhere better suited, like all the world beating harbours of the North Island. Consequently all the things you need are up here, and I would think very little in the way of support Industry is available in the South. And of course you run into the problem that all the go-ahead, intelligent, successful and attractive Kiwis come and live in Auckland, so it just would be unappealing to work down South.

I used to sail a gaff rigged schooner with my brother who owned it. It was converted to a staysail but it still was nothing but block and tackle. That was a LOT of line. I believe it was 50' at waterline but it's been a long time. Wood hull boat and smelled of pine tar - I loved that smell. Once the sails were set it was a pleasure to sail.
