Congratulations a beautiful classic racing boat, with lovely lines!

I wish. Beautiful boats. I learnt how to sail on these when the British Kiel Yacht Club had 6 or so back in the 60's/70's. They were a bit 'wet' but lively and great fun to sail.

I think there was one of these in Castle Cove Sailing Club for possibly fifty years. It was definitely a windfall. My father used to say they were best in light winds. The motor on the stern is not helping the way the yacht sits. It may hobby horse badly in heavy weather. Great to see someone taking it on and preserving it. Well done.

This little craft seems to rock for to aft a fair bit,almost seems light at the bow.Don't know what to make of it,but it's a sweetheart 😊

I was thinking the same. Maybe all the clobber is at the stern end. I notice she originally had an inboard engine which would have been below the cockpit and would have put even more weight aft.

Great back story (as usual) on the origins of this craft and good for Andy and Paula being the custodians of another piece of rare history. Thanks for the upload MCB, very interesting for a landlubber such as myself.

I sailed both Kranich and Flamingo, 100 squares, from BKYC Kiel in the 70's. Beutiful yachts. There were no 30, or 50's there by then, all sold off to private owners.

Brings back memories. I bought her sister ship Erida circa 1975/76. She has since had total restoration and modifications (shame). If you search Erida emerges from the shed you will find two clips.

The waterline looks like it's off... which makes the boat look like it has an aft water leak, and like it's sinking.

Very fluid design. Wonderful line. Luck guy.

It looks terribly lopsided. Mainly because of the outboard motor. 1) restore the inboard motor or replace. 2) restore the stepped mast (with a bendable wooden one) and diamond rig (a 3/4 jib rig is the best to sail with these old boats trim-wise). 3) give the wood some varnish as it cries for some protection. I know this will cost a lot of money but if people are interested in this type of design you could purchase a brand new Dragon with excellent sailing characteristics (there is still WC yearly on high competitive level). I myself owned a original Anker Dragon out of 1928, it was a beauty to sail :-)

For being restored some time ago it's looking poor now. The owners were not very careful, obviously. But after all it is an A&R. And this alone makes it interesting. Something like an original Bugatti on the water.

interesting boat............. rail for outboard, seemed like a good concept but ''boat'' not taking it well to low in stern. she would have trouble in a storm........dont need an engine that big. YOU should focus on design features with cam. mast base is quite substantial, what for?
@virgilgrillone72205 жыл бұрын
spymaine89 there was a shot of the hull when it was being refitted. The prop in position. There’s a motor down below. Plus the outboard perched on the transom. They should repair the motor and lose the outboard. That would put her back in balance. Germans, a bit lacking in world diplomacy, but excellent craftsman.

The boat looks perfect in the water, it just isn't weighted properly for a longer voyage, so that's why she's going low at the stern. This is a boat with very long overhangs, she's only going 6.4 metres at the waterline to an overall length of 9.5 metres, that means a whole 1/3 of the boat is overhang fore and aft. The aft overhang begins before the sitting area ends, and the outboard motor is stored entirely on the overhang. Sails are usually stored at the front, and I guess he doesn't store them permanently in the boat, which means the boat had no ballast at the front during the filming. For a longer trip the boat would be more evenly balanced. It's a long and very thin boat with beautiful lines and extremely low freeboards, this is not a blue water boat, and no one of a sane mind would cross the atlantic with this one. This is a fair weather boat for smaller lakes and the Dogger banks, where you can reach top speed on a sunny day in extremely calm weather. Leaning in the wind the water would be running above the freeboard, and it is built to handle that, just letting the water run along the deckhouse to the aft. It should be able to handle bad weather fairly well, but it is built more for Sunday entertaining and training the crew than actual voyage.

What a shame the outboard and bracket is pulling her down in the stern.
@martineyer53366 жыл бұрын
This yacht just does not look right the way it is siting in the water. It maybe that the mast is way to heavy for it, but you should investigate why it is so low in the stern before you set off anywhere with it.
@peterruston7755 жыл бұрын
That looks like it is the weight of the outboard motor hanging off the push-pit. Originally had an inboard engine and was well balanced and an exciting sail. 30's could handle full sail in a 20 knot blow. Great fun and I wish could afford to berth and maintain her.

Another name for the class of ‘sqm Yachts’ or ‘Seefahrtkreuzer’ is ‘windfall yachts’. The name arose from the practical circumstance that the UK as one of the allied forces claimed those boats as war trophies or repayments since they all were technically property of the military.
