I really like the Coin Guy!!! He does not mince words or beat around the bush. He says what he believes. We need more honest people like him in our world when we are constantly bombarded by the MSM and political theater of the day where we are constantly being lied to, and taught it's good to have zero morals and integrity. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that. Hopefully we get a lot more content with the Coin Guy in the future.

@@Spegtacular The history is definitely AWSOME. However when it comes to ancient coins (esp) and some Medievals..., there are TONS of fakes out there. And eventhough I've been a collector for 35+ years, I have still been fooled a couple times the past couple years. I'd advise new collectors to start out with low end, cheaper bronze coins. And definitely invest in a few books "before" jumping into ancient coin buying too deep.

@@Spegtacular Don´t be scared, Jesse ! Start with late Roman Empire copper coins in reasonable condition for a few bucks (Constantin, Gallienus, Aurelianus, Probus etc.) and get a "feeling" for this antique stuff. Then go ahead to the more pricey material. Until 19th century, Roman coins were the most common items ever minted.

Not hating on Coin guy, but why does he send so many coins to ICG and sell so many coins graded by ICG, instead of PCGS, NGC, or even ANACS? Do people in his area prefer ICG? I know ICG grading fees are cheap, but whenever I see a coin in an ICG slab I just don't even bother with it because they have such a bad reputation. Has Coin guy or Speg ever addressed this?

@Spegtacular
@Spegtacular 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve addressed this a lot actually. I personally have slabbed coins from NGC where they’ve messed up on the slab. I’ve seen coins from both PCGS where they’ve slabbed a coin as a completely different coin and countless other errors, graded incorrectly, misspelled, etc. ICG has people working for them that once worked for those larger companies and moved on. What is true is that they aren’t recognized the same way as NGC or PCGS because those companies advertise a LOT. Open any monthly/annual coin book/magazine and you’ll see those companies advertising. They grade just like anyone else, you can call them right now and actually talk to one of the graders within moments, and they’re cheaper/quicker. I’m still waiting for emails back from PCGS and it’s been about 4 years ;) If you think that one of those three companies are better graders than the others today, you’ve likely been brainwashed by those advertisements. A coin will present better for selling and likely resell for more in a NGC/PCGS slab but it’s because to the prior statement of advertising dollars and brainwashing :)

To answer your question in the beginning of the video the answer is right on the wall behind you on a piece of paper. Like speg I'm lucky enough to live in the spring Hill New Port Richey area and have been to coin guys shop many times to BS with him. As you can tell from his videos he is a living library of knowledge. But as I've spoken to him personally about and in many of his videos and the piece of paper I mentioned above he believes grading is subjective which after speaking to him multiple times he got me on board as well. In this day of advanced photography and machinery there is no standard yet to get a foolproof grading from any service. The best is two people at a grading service disputing if a coin should be a 69 or 70. I guess to ramble on a good example would be and I believe I can speak for a coin guy Take 10 coins that were graded say five of them a 69 four a 70 and throw a 68 in there as well. Have them all graded keep track crack them out of the case and resubmit them as many times as you want. And see how many times you're 70 turns into a 69 a 69 magically turns into a 70 the 68 will turn into a 69 In other words with human error it's always going to be subjective. So ultimately as he's told me buy the coin you like not the holder it's in. I personally think the reason for the lot of IGC holders he has it's probably due to cost time an age of the coins how long ago they were graded before pgcs and NGC became the industry standards. And if anything the holder gives you a nice ballpark for all of us layman's out there who don't know how to grade coins to let us know condition. But it is not the end all be all. Of what the actual grade of the coin may be again even among graders it's subjective. Look at other KZbinrs like Portsmouth coin shop and how he will use his expertise Crack out old Morgan's to see if they come back as a higher grade which can sometimes add hundreds or thousands of dollars to just one particular coin. And of course it goes the other way we'll crack a coin out hoping for a higher grade and then it comes back the same or lower. I'll say it again grading is subjective.

So, not to nitpick on our beloved CoinGuy too much, but there was two minor bits of history I wanted to mention about. I've been doing lots of research on the fall of Empires in history (cause it's, I dunno, relevant stuff) and it's all fresh. Technically, the Middle East did put out scientific innovations and culture during the middle ages (900ish-mid1400s), Baghdad was actually one of the cultural centers of the world with major leaps in astronomy and chemistry (refining eastern gunpowder and the first cannons, ect) but when the Mongol horde tore thro the Middle East they sacked and destroyed the great libraries of Baghdad (and quite literally butchered the entire population of every city east of the Caspian sea, anyone that resisted, the whole city was killed entirely) and while the Mongols did get all the way to central Europe and even threaten the Holy Roman Empire, they fell apart when Genghis Khan died and the advance mostly stopped. Russia as a single state exists b/c of the Mongolian advance, as does their massive borders (they colonized the barren Siberian tundra so no nomadic steppe army would ever rise there again). The Islamic world basically fell into it's present insular, paranoid, hyper-traditional stance as a reaction to the Mongol conquests. As for Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great, he actually DID conquer Rome, and most of central and southern Italy, along with large parts of the African coast and restored much of the former Roman Empires borders, however it was the Great Plague of Justinian (the first spread of Bubonic plague) that halted any further gains and forced the borders to contract again. First documented city to be hit with the Bubonic Plague was Alexandria, probably from it's ports as it was the gateway between the Mediterranean and Red Sea traffic (there was no Suez Canal back then, So Alexandria had two harbors, one facing the Med the other 'inland' with branches of the Nile, and then other ports further up the Nile could connect to the Red Sea, so a really small overland hop was all that was need in Upper Egypt rather than the neck of the Sinai peninsula). That's just where it was first documented, it could have come from the interior of Africa, or Southeast Asia as trade with China and India was a common occurrence (Even the Roman Empire circa 300 AD received Chinese pottery and goods via this overseas route). Bubonic Plague probably originated in livestock, and it was a sorta ticking timebomb for thousands of years since humans first domesticated animals that something would jump the species gap. Now of course stuff can jump in weeks not millennia thanks to 'scientists' fucking up. Also, Fun Fact: The Byzantine Empire didn't call itself that, they called themselves the Roman Empire still. They were the Eastern Roman Empire, not a different government in their eyes. The word 'Byzantine' is much newer too, cropping up in history books written just after the Fall of Constantinople and comes from the city's first name, Byzantium. It was originally a Greek Colony back before the Roman Republic and was never really a big player until Emperor Constantine reinvented it. Constantine is also the first Roman Emperor to be Christian and later made a Saint; a later emperor would formalize Christianity as the official religion and defacto ban Paganism, he was also Canonized, lol.
