If you are trading or have your coins with sell orders, a cold wallet is irrelevant. Sometimes I might have only a few tokens that are erc-20 tokens and the freaking gas is so much it’s not worth sending to a cold wallet… cause you also gotta send it back to the exchange when you’re ready to sell… even more gas 💵.

I don’t think it’s a keylogger. It seems whenever you’re online. The hacker has remote access to your laptop hence why you don’t get any email notifications etc from Coinbase. I would reinstall windows as a precaution as the malware could still be present…depends how sophisticated this hack is

I personally have 2 dedicated desktop computers for crypto and absolutely nothing else. No telegram or discord or anything like that on either of those computers. I have over 25 different wallets using google chrome and brave browser. I spread out my crypto so if anything like this happens it’s usually minimal but luckily for me I’ve only suffered one loss 3 years ago and it wasn’t a big loss.

Hardware wallets come with their own risk. Damage (fire, being stepped on etc...), hardware malfunction, theft (burglary), lost of device etc... If anybody does own one, then it's probably worth getting two.

Get a cheap Mac or Linux box and only use it for crypto. Nothing else. It sounds like the hack has remote control of your system and that's why it wouldn't show up in the log. If you don't explicitly logout of your coinbase account the session will still be "active" for days and you doh't need to login (technically you are still logged in when you go the site and no need for 2FA). You should have also done a BIOS firmware update/re-write on your system. I would have used a brand new USB stick and downloaded the BIOS firmware from a known non-infected system. You would completely erase the hard drive in your infected system, then do the firmware update, then re-install your OS. That's the safest way considering your anti-virus and anti-malware didn't catch anything suspicious.

Do you know for sure that Coinbase lets you stay logged in for days? Most of my accounts kick me out in less than an hour. Kraken lets you set the amount of time you stay inactive without getting kicked out, up to around 4 hours. I have never heard of any financial platform allowing you to stay logged in for days without activity

You are lucky man. My Coinbase was hacked last year. The hacker sold my coins and withdraw the USD instantly. Money is gone right away. Coinbase doesn't want to pay for it. How can I proceed ? use apple phone only if you want to make sure your phone is not compromised. Andriod phone are extremely prone to hack even if you did not download anything and therefore never store crypto or bank apps related using trash android OS phone.
