How many people have a college degree, yet your job does not require a college degree?

95% of college education can be done at home on the computer. Education is important as a personal achievement but career wise, get a union job, a post office job, something blue collar. Most professional careers don't last the time it takes to pay your student loan.

If I could go back in time I would have skipped college. It took forever, cost a fortune, and no job after I finished. In other words, college didn't help me at all.

I went to a community college with a full ride scholarship. I graduated with honors with two associates degree in 2012 at the age of 19. From there I transferred to a 4 year university despite having scholarships still needed loans to pay the other half of the expenses. This year (May 4, 2014) I received my bachelors degree and I own $13K for the two years I was at the 4 year university....Now, I have 3 degrees and I work part time 29 hrs per week, minimum wage and I am a custodian....#RealityCheck worst decision of my life.

Yes it is a resealable and reusable zip tie; it will hold 50 pounds of weight up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit, bundles as large as 1.75 inches in diameter, is Ultraviolet light resistant and will not melt to about 542K and has a density of only 1.14 grams per cubic centimeter. I like how they are very easy to use and are more sanitary and easier to clean than hair ties. Thanks for asking!

I have a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Florida International University. Big Deal! I've never really had a job that required my education. I can't complain about the price because I went to college when it was cheap. I went to school on my G.I. bill that I got from being in the U.S. Army. I was actually paid to go to school. No loans. No debt. I couldn't go to college today even if I wanted to.

Don't feel bad. Many of us have gone that direction because we thought it is the right path to go to get where you wanna go. These things were instilled in us through parents, teachers, adults, and politicians. The choices that you and many of us made is not the problem. The problem is the greed and lies of colleges, corporations,and government which made the system get out of control by colleges charging more in tuition and books, Corporations not hiring and paying college graduates.

This personal experience is a serious trend as a whole; devalued degrees and an increased percentage of service jobs that are low paying/low skill do not require degrees.Experience still outweighs education as many are offered jobs based on results not education.Consider my review as one would look at an online review of a restaurant and the dish ordered; the restaurant was poor and the type dish regardless of preparer in general was not a pleasing item to most like Khlea or a Durian.

My point in the previous comment was that the educational options must be relevant to the career paths that are available. The Community College model of having commuter students with relatively short 2 year periods of educational requirements combined with more compact and cheaper facilities and generally newer equipment would allow them to be optimal training grounds for future jobs. I am happy with my life. I am employed and a Bachelors Degree would have led me to the same place but in debt.

Here in Michigan we have a career college that have a mechanical engineer, civil, industrial, automotive service technology they also have health programs and on and on. They also require a internship before graduation. People need to smarten up and pick their majors a little more careful and also pick their schools a little more careful my school is a non for profit meaning that they just don't let you in with out taking a test to see your weakness and then giving you help in those areas.

I am not complaining about the job I have. The fact of the matter is that much of the knowledge necessary to do much work today is acquired at the job or can be learned by disciplined studying.The honest truth is that my family and I could not afford a pristine college education so I took what I could pay for with my own money. I maybe should have taken a scholarship to an ivy league but I never bothered to apply. Though it is now apparent that the college industrial complex is a debt-scam.

Hey so, do you think putting/risking the money to put in a small business is better than putting it into the education? I mean, If you get a start off to how to get enough money to proceed on with your life...AND you could get an education on the side what do you think?
@JPChannel100
@JPChannel100 12 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would think that would be a great idea. One can start a business in something and expand into other areas as time goes on. Businesses move in real time and adapt to survive while our formal educations are processes that take time and might be relevant at graduation. Even a small profit is a profit.

Let me briefly tell you my story. I went to college to study math because I was good at it and was interested in it (I am still interested in it). But going to college actually HURT me because I had to take a lot of bullshit classes that I wasn't really interested in, never mind the thousands of dollars I spent because I was interested in the Riemann-Zeta function. So I have some ideas about how we can change the education system that I can't express in 200 characters or less. Interested?

I am just like you, however, I want to study English instead, I am interested in English. However, I am doing classes that are pointless and have zero interest in learning, simply because I have learned them in High School. You're right, the schooling system in America is failing. It's not about learning. It's about regurgitating and passing.

Yeah I do ask myself that a lot but I already saw how bad the economy was getting when I was leaving Community College. What if I could not get a job? I will always know that I never borrowed money to get my education, I never used the government, I never lived beyond my means, I did everything on my own and my own way. One of my best friends went to Cornell but he is now in Heaven; I wonder how much he could have done.

Um....Community Colleges generally don't offer 4-year degrees. They offer 2-year Associate's degrees that are almost worthless. Community Colleges are useful for transferring to other universities to get Bachelor's and Graduate degrees which are worth a lot.
@elzoog
@elzoog 12 жыл бұрын
How about this idea. Instead of setting up a school where you can get a BS or BA degree, how about they offer certificates instead? For example, you want to study renaissance period poetry? The school offers that course and if you complete it successfully, you get a certificate in renaissance period poetry. Also, most of the money you pay for the course goes to the professor that teaches it. Potential problem might be, a course in PHP programming would be much more popular than poetry.

I do not know how that can be said. I am showing how the standard 4 year college degree can be unnecessary and not that education can be a sham. Most of the emergency response workers like the police and paramedics hold educations learned inside of community colleges and with the aging infrastructure of universities combined with the sustainability and flexibility of community colleges the ideal source to educate workers on the skills necessary for any future jobs will be community college.

Mikey johnson I said "may". I did not say that you HAVE to have it, but it may be needed for company positions- in that case, an undergrad degree would not be as beneficial as tacking on a master's. Obviously, it's not required if you want to be your own boss; for that, however, you need a good business idea and some money, whether through loans or otherwise.

Sounds great, feel free to add more comments. Your story is very relevant as so many young people have talents and interests that are set aside by the bureaucracy that are education requirements imposed by the college industrial complex. If you have a certain interest or skill why do we limit your ability to pursue what you need to be successful? We lost our place in the world by making necessary information secular, expensive and delayed four years. Ask a MBA how to setup an EIN.

man, i would be so fuckin pissed if i got a bachelors degree, and didn't get a job making $130-$200,000 dollars a year. this crap about how all these college graduates are unemployed, not employed in they're field of study, and working with other people who never went to college, is bullshit. in my opinion, employers got flooded with resumes from college graduates over the last 20 years, and now there's no good jobs left. which is why there's all these college graduates who are unemployed, and in debt. basically there's too many college graduates, and not enough $130,000 dollar a year jobs. now-a-days if you go to college, you gotta make sure that there,s a large employer demand for that major. otherwise you're probably gonna be screwed when you graduate.

You'll be in a world of disappointment if you think you can get a $130,000 job right off the bat from just a 4-year basic undergraduate university; some people can, but the vast majority don't. You most likely need higher degrees or job experience, or both, to ensure more success in the job market.

Sometimes degrees provide valuable skills and sometimes they don't. The issue today is that degrees are sold as certifications like a job hunting license. Honestly we know that product degrees are sold to young people; professors have even admitted to me that salesmanship is a necessary component in modern colleges. You do not NEED a degree to be successful. We all carve our own paths in life mine has no debt obligations.

I am not looking for sympathy at all in fact I am happy I did what I did. My guidance counselor said that I would be accepted to an Ivy League and that scholarships would have been more prevalent if, "I was another race,". My counselor also said that she wanted me to take another SAT even with my high score because, "It would show a drive for constant improvement,". The points about researching before going to college are what I am trying to illustrate in this video.

You have to decide what you are going to do before hand, then look for a college that doesn't have a completely horrible reputation in that field, & that has recognition by your professional body. If they don't look at your scores, then they are probably fishing for students. You have to ask why. If you aren't doing something highly technical like science or engineering, medicine or law, or don't you have a legislative requirement for a piece of paper, you have to ask is college really for you.

I agree that the vast majority of college students are involved in something they neither understand, appreciate, nor will get any use from. For those people, college is a waste of their time, because they will never gain clarity of thought. Engineering - even at the mediocre institutions - remains a strong payback candidate; almost every other discipline should be approached with caution.

The elephant in the room is it does not matter what you learn if you are not living in the current city that you can grow!! 99% of your success is your location. I just moved to Texas from Louisiana it is like light and day. You MUST look at the industries in your area many of the higher jobs are in BIG CITIES like New York and if your not able to move you are at the basic level. It not just what you learn it's also the TYPES of job you have worked that get you hired.

I remember MOST of the things I learned in High School, including my teachers names & the periods I was in. Learning is never a process that stops after college. Learning is a way of life. You never stop learning or else you die. Even a high school drop out will continue to learn & learn & learn. Also, Failure is a learning process. People need to stop comparing themselves to the bullshit they see on TV. Failure is a teaching aid, and can lead to major breakthroughs! I respect your experience and initiative. However, I would not be so quick to dismiss the value of college. It depends on what you want to do, particularly in the long term, and what kind of person you are. THere are very interesting career tracks that only college can open, such as international economics work. I studied politics and had a very hard time getting my first job (way back in the 1980s), but am now a writer and travel all over the world on commission, all expenses paid, to do investigative reporting. THere is no way I could have done this without a good education. That being said, you are absolutely correct that many jobs do not require a liberal arts education even though that is the hurdle they all too often set for the first interview. I also agree that we have to re-think our national priorities. I hope to see more of your vids and wish you luck.

It never crossed my mind that the govt would offer student loan forgiveness in exchange for military service. They must definitely have this on standby just waiting for the perfect time to dangle that carrot. Maybe in the next 5 to 10 years.

I was interviewed on RT News in 2011 about being long-term unemployed. I can build and repair computers, produce network-quality video, I have a clean record, plenty of varied work experience, good references, etc. ***STILL can't even get a job flipping burgers since 2009!*** I'm living in my dad's 10'x5' dining room, got an '84 Ford sitting in the driveway, covered in spider webs and dirt (because I can't even afford to fix and drive it). why didn't you go to ivy league? With the degree you would get you would be able to get a job right out of college. the average starting salary from Cornell is $125,000. Its RIDICULOUS to believe that saving a minimal amount of money is better than complete financial sustainability. I would believe your arguments, but its all based off of speculation and invalid assumptions. Seriously most of the people who post things about college being a scam aren't doing as well as a 4 year university grad.

You only need a HS diploma college is just a big pile of shit. The reason why I wanted mine was so I can get a job working in the IT field. Only way I would ever go back is once I pay off $1800 to UOP and actually get an associates degree in information tech and theres actually a damn job for that.

You know what, I feel the same way about college sometimes. I was born in 1989, my original graduation was scheduled for 2007 but I ended up graduating in 2010. I was not the smartest student in school but I always knew college was a complete ripoff. like fast forward like a year after that; I tried taking my classes online with UOP was a complete waste of fucking time. I only owe about $1800 in dept but hey I'm not completely in debt and I found a job getting paid 12.96 an hr so fuck college.

If you guidance counselor tell you to take another sat that means you didn't do so well on the first one so it's best to take her advice. I took SAT prep because that score will make or break your chances of getting into college. By not doing the proper research and getting a shitty degree you screwed yourself and I don't feel sorry for you.

of course they are not going to let you go and take the course, acquire the knowledge and then give back the degree.You still know what you know.It's not like your community college has a machine to erase your memory of ever taking the course. But the second half of your video was enlightening.Not so much your education but in the cases you sighted it was what you did , the activities you engaged in that gave them more of an inkling of what they can expect from you as a person that got you the job.I always thought that schools should concentrate on building up confidence, courage and leadership in young people.I really do think that lack of confidence is one of the major reasons so many don't do well.How many people do you know that have tons of talent but never risk trying to do anything with it.

While I agree with somethings you said. you can not return the knowledge you have taken into your brain. You are paying interest on the loan not the degree. That is why you can not give back your degree for the money you borrowed.

WorstCaseAce But the thing is, college is self study. The only thing we really want to pay for is the Professors guidance in the subject. The only part I really dislike about college is the set time frame they give you to learn the subject. Some of those subjects, and the professors know it better than you, can take years to really learn them. So in reality, were not really learning all we should. And this is what people are having issues with. The education while all encompassing is not complete to the full extent because of not enough time to learn them. So the schools really leave it to you to figure out everything and then telling you, you did a bad job if you didn't pass the coarse or you didn't complete in time. This system, especially with the internet and MOOCs, seem a little redundant.

notbigtony Gotta pay for the rubber stamp barrier to entry. Unfortunately, getting a job in today's world requires the stamp of approval....so knowledge gained without the stamp has no value, unless you start your own business.

saintgauden You seem very adamant that a degree is 'required' and you 'got to pay for it', but even Google now is hiring people without degrees. But yes, it is true most places require a degree, even if the job itself requires no actual intelligence or skill. In that case, I feel lucky that I have my own business and would recommend to anyone to find their niche and start a side business in it. Or, if you have no creativity or time to start a business then you could easily just fake a degree for most jobs.

Mistakes in this video: 1,) Ivy league colleges are expensive Reality: they are dirt cheap if you qualify as a low income person. For low income, it is a certain percentage of your income. 2.) Community College Reality: Community College is NOT COLLEGE. IT IS A JOKE. DO NOT GO. IT IS A SCAM!!! My personal experience: Go to college to further your career choice. DO NOT GO if you have no idea what you want to do in life. Take a year off and figure it out. When at college, work on getting RELEVANT internships. WORK EXPERIENCE > GPA. --Class of 2014, employed 4 months after graduation.

I agree for the most part, but community college can have its benefits if paying for college is hard. I'm a student at UNC and I was also in an early college for four years, where I earned my AA and all my gen eds except for language. Now, I have so much flexibility in my schedule that I could actually qualify for majors in more subjects than I am allowed to take (English, Math, PWAD, and a Creative Writing minor). But if you're not going to a community college for a mechanical or low-ranking medical certification or to save some money on gen eds, then it's a scam.

matthewwh100 I agree. I just graduated in 2014, and found a job rather quickly. The key to finding a good job is to network. Grades, although important, are secondary to being able to make real impact in an interview or in a simple introduction.

mtime6 Actually, community colleges, depending on where they're located, offer a lot of career related stuff. But unfortunately, they only offer to you while your going to school there. And it continues. Internships can only be given to students that are actively taking classes during the semester. In fact, to get those services, you have to be taking classes during the semester you want to get career help. and then, there's the GPA rules. But it's not just the CC's, it all coleges.

Now Im nearly 30 000 in debt, can't get a job in my field and my parents have to dip into their pockets to pay this senseless debt I took, its not that the degree is worthless, its that I don't have any work experience.
